I swear you create like one new discord server per month
this is literally my second discord I've made ever

the one I was advertising last month on this forum is the same one I have now - it's just way bigger and cooler because I put work into it

far better than sol's - and she doesn't even own hers

I adore being on the very top, but I feel like this may decrease my likability among my followers - any suggestions?

YouTube

legitimately looks like a solid adaptation - those who hate adaptations in general, stay out of this thread. It's for talking about the quality of this specific film and how good it is

To tinker with it a bit and increase the quality - set the playback speed to custom and type in 1.15x. Some people are saying 1.25x but that's a bit off tempo - 1.15x makes the song so much better and Disney should take note

end of video spoiler
"So how does it work?"

".....the whole song, was the instructions!!"

god I love meta humor so much. So fucking excited to see this one, I actually just watched the original on rabb.it a few days ago so it's fresh in my mind

Not that different where being polite β€œgets you nothing”. You shouldn’t be polite to get something in return, that’s just what you should strive to do as much as you can.
you're not wrong, but i never said you should get anything in return

i'm just stating the fact that you don't, which sure as fuck doesn't make it any easier (and you should know)
Quote
It absolutely is something to ban you over. If you invite some dude to a community and he starts talking shit to you and everyone else why wouldn’t you ban him?
literally and unironically because it's a free country, or at least that's the idea

that's why i want to find a community that allows me to do these thingsβ€”but not even 4chan, with all its scumfuckery, will even allow you to be too much of a shithead before you get banned
No joke I respect free speech so much, and as long as you're not breaking the rules you will never be banned for negativity in my group

really you should consider joining TVC

WTF is garrett dillahunt doing in this shitty thread

Respect this man!

it is 100% okay to feel shame or guilt for liking the things you like

there are some things that should just not be liked, and having the self-awareness to admit that is a great thing to have
It's okay, sure - never said it was morally wrong or anything. However, it's not conductive to a happy mind. It creates cognitive dissonance to both legitimately enjoy something, and to feel ashamed for that enjoyment. It creates mental clouding and distress. So why do it?

To end the cognitive dissonance, you need to fix one of the conflicting values. You have a choice of simply not feeling shame, or to stop enjoying that thing altogether. Between the two, the first certainly makes more rational sense.

if i've learned anything from the hundreds of times i've been banned from various communities, it's that you can be castigated from a community for more than just a single post, and if people are treating you like shit, it's probably because of your reputation rather than just any one thing
Which is absolutely ridiculous. A new day is a new day, and a new topic is a new topic. Why dig up irrelevant shit in the back of your mind to mar the thread and burn bridges with someone who you might actually like if the circumstances were different?

being polite on the internet has basically no benefits, because nobody cares (and why would they)
Being nice & polite has benefits no matter where you go, IRL or on the web. How do you think I've cultivated my cult of personality? Through my personality itself, sure, but also just through being a plain ol nice person

I get you have all this anger, and that releasing it can be cathartic, but maybe focus on why you have so much, so you don't need to release it in the first place?
it's because i live on a shit planet comprised of nothing but the most disgusting, stupid, or evil people (or some combination)

i find that exceptionally distressing, considering that i don't have the option to leave, and that i'm expected to mingle and cooperate with them

i don't need to spend any time thinking more about that, i already have that part figured out
True - and most of us know that

I value truth, but I value happiness and contentment a lot more. If you pardoned these people who were unlucky enough to be born onto the same shit planet as you for their revoltingness and stupidity, you'll find that closing your mind is as easy as closing your eyes.

What's the point of being right if that correctness leads you to such suffering? For example, I could easily loathe you forever for supporting challenger in his fucked up accusation that I kill cats, regardless of whether or not that support was sincere, but I choose not to out of utility. You're one of the few active users here, and even though holding that grudge may be right, it isn't convenient or happiness-inducing.

You obviously disagree here, but yeah. I will never understand you - why you're smart enough to recognize the world for what it is, but not enough to know how to traverse it.

Hey guys, have you seen this new show? I like this show! It's fun and quirky while still being very intense in its characterizations and plotlines. I understand a show like this isn't for everyone, as it generally doesn't take itself very seriously, but I'm not ashamed for liking the things I like! Hope you can understand this sentiment, and maybe give this show a chance?

Either way, I hope everyone here is having a fantastic evening!
FUCKING LIGHT YOURSELF ON FIRE YOU PIECE OF SHIT TRANNY, GOD I FUCKING HATE YOU AND SO DOES LITERALLY EVERYONE HERE. YOU'RE A FUCKING DISGRACE TO SOCIETY, YOUR FAMILY, AND THE HUMAN RACE ITSELF. I HATE YOU SO FUCKING MUCH AND ACTIVELY LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN THEY INEVITABLY FIND YOU DEAD ON THE TRAIN TRACKS. FUCK YOU TRANNY
Oh jeez, that's a little harsh don't you think? I get that you find me annoying but is this level of vitriol really warranted?
Kill yourself.

you know i see your point OP but maybe the problem is with you

i agree that subjectivity is implied, because having to say "IMO" every time is obnoxious and you shouldn't have to do it, but at the same time, you don't have to express these opinions with such aggression and hostility

spy kids is one of those things i'm very embarrassed to have enjoyed as a kid, like anti-nostalgia
"You have all this rage and shame and loneliness, which I don't even know how to feel, much less understand..."

Seriously man, stop being so damn ashamed and judgmental of fucking everything. It gets so old. Why do you live your life based on what looks good? Spy Kids might be a "cringy" film series, but who the fuck cares? If it's fun and enjoyable, why be embarrassed you liked it? That's not the sign of an independent thinker - your brain is tied irrevocably to social approval.

Are we forgetting about the Toymaker / Sylvester Stallone? He alone made the movie great, and spy kids 3 deserves a lot less hate.

uhh it’s alright so far
Hell yes, what did you think?

It just gets better btw, as it builds continuity and develops characters. It has a very patient pace, so don't let that turn you off of it.

My favorite title card (and probably my favorite episode)

We've stopped at plenty of places, and in fact I had an excellent battered cod from Bob Evans tonight. I love the aesthetic of this restaurant, I won't lie. The drinks are even served out of mason jars.

What about you? All-time favorite restaurant and the last one you visited? How was the experience there?

Spoiler
My favorite restaurant in general is Red Robin, probably. Sure it's not the best but it's very nostalgic for me.

I honestly don't know what you expected. You are not welcomed here.
Yikes! Harsh words but thanks for the feedback!

It's because of a few things:

1) it's from A Series of Unfortunate Events, which upon thinking about it I have realized ranks as among the most "secondclass" properties out there, given your general tastes (the fact that it's a young adult series, especially). Not that the series is that bad, but again, it's a very secondclass property.
Makes sense. Is something being a "secondclass property" a bad thing? I guess I didn't know, but then again I wasn't aware of the reality that MarKhan just pointed out, anyway.

2) you just posted multiple giant excerpts. It's cringy, especially since you're claiming that they're oh-so-profound. If you were going to discuss a particular character or aspect of the series, actually discuss it as opposed to just posting giant excerpts
Hmm, I see. I didn't know that quoting the works was cringy - I mean, if you want to show why you love something, isn't the best way to accomplish that by showing excerpts from that work? What is there to discuss if what I want to discuss is ignored and scorned? Should I have posted something beneath each quote saying "let's discuss what this quote means and the implications of it"? I thought that was implied.

Regardless, the thread really wasn't about ASOUE in the first place - in the very thread, I asked people to post their favorite quotes from any literary work. So this criticism I really don't understand.

I hope to do better in the future with my thread creation, so please stay posted! This thread itself may seem a bit self-aggrandizing, but believe me every bit of criticism helps.

why was this thread received negatively? how is a thread about literature bad when "I used to find black girls unattractive" is the norm?

It is useless for me to describe to you how terrible Violet, Klaus, and even Sunny felt in the time that followed. If you have ever lost someone very important to you, then you already know how it feels, and if you haven't, you cannot possibly imagine it.

!!!! best one??

The Flood / Re: Aunt Josephine's fear had made her a bad guardian.

It is likely your own eyes were closed when you were born, so that you left the safe place of your mother’s womb and joined the treachery of the world without seeing exactly where you were going. You did not know the people who were helping you make your way here, or the people who would shelter you as your life began, when you were even smaller and more delicate and demanding than you are now. It seems strange that you would do such a thing, and leave yourself in the care of strangers for so long, only gradually opening your eyes to see what all the fuss was about, and yet this is the way nearly everyone comes into the world. Perhaps if we saw what was ahead of us, and glimpsed the crimes, follies, and misfortunes that would befall us later on, we would all stay in our mothers’ wombs, and then there would be nobody in the world but a great number of very fat, very irritated women.

In any case, this is how all our stories begin, in darkness with our eyes closed, and all our stories end the same way, too, with all of us uttering some last words - or someone else’s - before slipping back into darkness as our series of unfortunate events comes to an end.

The Flood / Aunt Josephine's fear had made her a bad guardian.
« on: May 24, 2019, 09:40:44 PM »
Aunt Josephine's fear had made her a bad guardian. A guardian is supposed to stay with children and keep them safe, but Aunt Josephine had run away at the first sign of danger. A guardian is supposed to help children in times of trouble, but Aunt Josephine practically had to be dragged out of the Curdled Cave when they needed her. And a guardian is supposed to protect children from danger, but Aunt Josephine had offered the orphans to Captain Sham in exchange for her own safety.

But despite all of Aunt Josephine's faults, the orphans still cared about her. She had taught them many things, even if most of them were boring. She had provided a home, even if it was cold and unable to withstand hurricanes. And the children knew that Aunt Josephine, like the Baudelaires themselves, had experienced some terrible things in her life. So as their guardian faded from view and the lights of Damocles Dock approached closer and closer, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny did not think "Josephine, schmosephine." They thought "We hope Aunt Josephine is safe."
