The Flood / Re: Sep7agon.net - The TV Tropes Article
« on: September 26, 2015, 04:15:20 PM »
Curb-Stomp Battle: Chally's Armenian genocide.

Darker and Edgier: Anarchy is this, between the no-rules gimmick and option for total anonymity.

Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: Existential discussions in Serious range from one end to the other.

Shout Out: To Bungie.net, obviously. "The Flood", the name of the site itself, and member ranks all reference Bnet. Anarchy themes often reference certain franchises, as well.

I'll add more later.
thx for linking to the articles and shit

i'll try to see if i can find more fitting tropes for those things--i'm not sure if i'm feeling some of the ones you picked
thanks though

Too little of a chance.

There have been 100,000,000,000 people on Earth.

Maybe 5000 of them amounted to anything in their lives and contributed anything of value to society.

I'll try to update this periodically; your help is appreciated.

In each update post, I'll include a list of new tropes added, so that you don't have to keep rereading the main article. That'll work.

Draco in Leather Pants: The tendency of fandom to fetishize a certain character (usually a villain or Anti-Hero), and play up said character's attractiveness over his or her personality flaws.
Try to come up with specific examples from the site, too, instead of just defining the trope.

Cloudcuckoolander: A character who has a spacey personality and, while not necessarily stupid, usually lapses into odd non-sequitur sayings or actions.

elegiac?
Yeah, that's more like it.

The Flood / Re: Sep7agon.net - The TV Tropes Article

So only existing tropes are allowed?
Preferably.

Good God what have you done
Blind love: A person whose appearance isn't known to anyone else, yet they remain one of the most aftersought user.

Edit: did I do it right?
Not quite. "Blind Love" is not an established trope, as far as I know. And I don't think there are really any notable examples of that on this website.

Heel-Face Turn: When a character switches sides from bad to good.

Isn't that what Verbatim kind of did with his apology threads?
That could work, I guess, but I kinda want to mention myself as little as possible. Considering it's my thread, and all. I don't want to be too self-indulgent.

The Flood / Sep7agon.net - The TV Tropes Article
« on: September 26, 2015, 01:00:31 PM »

"Literally all of us are Hikikomori NEETs who sit on the forum all day F5ing until we see something we can smash with the hammers. Totes."
Forum Ninja, Mr Psychologist

Originally an offshoot of the humble yet boisterous video gaming forum found on Bungie.net (or B.net), Sep7agon.net is one of a considerably large number of grassroots communities created by dissatisfied members of B.net.

In January 2013, what was once a unique and intuitively-designed forum, primarily for discussing Bungie's Halo franchise, had become a slow, blinding, and borderline unusable website overnight. The update coincided closely with Bungie's release of Destiny, their latest game, and many once-beloved features of the website were either destroyed or maimed in the process. This, along with Destiny's lukewarm reception, created a large divide in the userbase, with many veteran users deeming the website too drastically different to ever use comfortably again.

In an effort to recreate the experience of "B.old", a user known as Cheatlancer created Sep7agon.net in the summer of 2014, to moderate success. Many veteran users took a liking to Cheat's meticulous replication of the old website's design, and as a result, it became the most popular and thriving of the Bungie.net off-sites.

With a community of about 100-200 active users in any given week, the forum is naturally very tightly-knit, and there is a wide menagerie of colorful personalities who presently frequent the site. Enough to, say, write a TV Tropes article about it!

Help me out.

No, I'm not actually gonna put this on TV Tropes, even though I totally could. This is just for fun.

Boards of Sep7agon

  • The Flood: The off-topic forum. Takes its name from B.old. Most activity takes place here.
  • HQ: The staff's headquarters. Forum Ninjas & Architects (moderators & administrators) discuss pertinent matters here.
  • Septagon: The "town hall" of the website. Members can propose and discuss changes to the forum here with moderators.
  • Gaming: Home of all video game discussion.
  • News: Site updates and community polls are posted here.
  • Serious: Political and religious discussion go here, among other more "serious" topics.
  • Destiny: All spam/garbage threads get dumped here. No, it's not actually about Destiny. Unless... Destiny is garbage...
  • Anarchy: A hidden forum that only opens on special occasions. Here, all forum rules are suspended, and users are given the ability to post anonymously.

This website provides examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: This was a Bungie.net offsite once. It has since taken a life of its own, and many users try to dissociate this website from its progenitor as much as possible.
  • Author Appeal: The site isn't an exact replica of pre-update Bungie.net, but it's quite close. A number of differences are likely liberties taken by Cheat to improve upon what he viewed as flaws of the older site.
  • Back From the Dead: Naturally, given the size of the community. A number of users often make dramatic leaves, only to return shortly thereafter. Also, a couple of permabanned users have had their bans rescinded over time. For better or for worse.
  • Berserk Button: Many users have specific topics that really trigger them, and result in either heated arguments or conniption fits. Hilarity ensues for any casual onlookers.
  • Crapsack World: Bungie.net. The reason why Sep7agon exists is because this is what B.net is now perceived as to a number of users. Also, Sep7agon itself, depending on your mileage.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In August of 2015, user challengerX faced off against Decimator Omega in a matchmaking of Halo 3. It didn't end well for Deci. The event is often spitefully referred back to as "the Armenian Genocide," due to Deci's heritage.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has its fair share of 'em. Perhaps not to the point of it being a World of Snark, but enough to make it so that the community isn't exactly... welcoming.
  • Gallows Humor: Much of the community's sense of humor is based around this.
  • Shout Out: Cheat built Sep7agon from the ground up to look and function exactly like Bungie.net did, pre-update. As such, a number of artifacts from the old site are present, along with Cheat's own embellishments:
    • The off-topic forum, the Flood, is named after B.net's off-topic forum, which in itself is named after the infamous zombie-like alien species that serve as secondary antagonists in the Halo franchise.
    • The userbase is given a selection of special nameplates to use, some of which contain Shout Outs to a variety of things, including Halo, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Assassin's Creed, Dark Souls, and even 4chan.
    • The hidden Anarchy forum has used a number of video game and TV show themes, including BioShock, Fallout, and The Walking Dead.

Character sheets:

Notable users
Cheat
User ID: Cheatlancer

The Maker of Sep7agon. Administrator and active member of the community.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Is known for his androgynous physical appearance.
  • Asexuality: Purportedly. Works well with the above trope, anyway.
  • Hollywood Atheist: To an extent. Cheat is a rather outspoken anti-theistic atheist, and often tells the Christian ex-Monitor Rocketman287 that "God's not real." However, since he doesn't do this to any of the other Christians on the forum, it can be assumed that this is just friendly teasing. Probably.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Has a decent approval rating among the community, and is generally looked upon as a good administrator. However, the reception of his moderating duties have been mixed at best, with some users accusing him of favoritism, negligence, and punitive inconsistency. Additionally, some claim that his recent NSFW policies are unnecessary and hurt the site's freedom.
  • The Maker
  • Totalitarian Utilitarian: While he clearly wants the best for his growing community, and is very receptive to criticism, he still has his own core personal set of ideas of where he wants the site to go, which are unmitigable.
Flee
User ID: Flee

One of the longest-standing moderators on Sep7agon (along with Psy), Flee is also a highly respected member of the community. He was a law student, and thus, is the first man many users will go to for legal inquiries. As per his field of study, he is very knowledgeable about litigious or criminal statistics, and so is a valued contributor of the Serious board.

Icy Wind
User ID: IcyWind

Another old staff member, Icy has taken a number of roles, from Monitor, Ninja, to "Content Monitor". Once resigned from his Ninja position due to a growing fatigue with managing the community, he has recently been reinstated, because of a thinning staff population as of late.

Kitsune
User ID: Kitsunekun

One of the newest regulars, Kitsune is currently presiding as a Forum Monitor. Notably, she's one of the few users to have found this website from a source outside of Bungie.net (while using Tapatalk, as well).

  • Cosplay: Once dressed up as Harley Quinn, while her boyfriend dressed up as the Joker.
  • Genki Girl: And how! She was promoted to Monitor because the staff felt like the forum needed a "friendly face" on staff, and Kits proved to be the best example.
LC
User ID: Lord Commissar

Highest ranking member of the site, except for Cheat himself. Though the administrative Architect rank is normally reserved for users well-versed in programming, LC has no programming chops whatsoever(?), and was chosen by Cheat for reasons unknown.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Though it has sort of died down, LC is often referred to as "Grandma" by the community, despite being ostensibly male.
  • Artifact Alias: "LC" stands for "Lord Commissar", but everyone just calls him LC, to the point where you might just forget it stands for anything.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When finding the snarkiest staff member, LC could rival Icy in this regard. Is rather unpopular with some users for this, with some of the community considering his attitude unbecoming of his high rank.
  • Earned Stripes: His adminstrative position is denoted by a bright yellow title bar and text color.
  • Highly Visible Ninja: Used to be. He's a little bit more higher-ranked than a Ninja now.
  • Never My Fault: Due to his opinionated nature, he tends to get into a lot of arguments with fellow users, often derailing the thread in the process. He'll never own up to this, of course, let alone ever admit he's wrong about anything.
  • Otaku: Not to the same great extents as some other users, but could still be considered one under lenient definitions.
  • The Dragon: To Cheat. Second-highest ranking user on the website.
Meta Cognition
User ID: Meta Cognition

Habitué and borderline sovereign of the Serious board. Known for his predilection for the highly esoteric field of economics, among other challenging subjects.

  • Black Comedy: Has a penchant for this.
  • Hidden Depths: Though rare, Meta does occasionally wander outside of the Serious board. Much of his more "human" side comes through a lot in his Flood posts. His Gaming posts are even more elusive, but they happen, once in a blue moon.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Meta is rather infamous for speaking in arcane tongues during debates. Justified, considering that his two pet subjects, economics and philosophy, are known for their intimidating volumes of abstruse terminology and jargon. Still, it is not uncommon for some users to go, "English, please?" during discussions with him.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Natch. Meta is the only user on the website who can write up a calculated diatribe explaining precisely why his opposition is wrong, while simultaneously claiming that they "suck meaty balls."
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: The Metalution. When Meta's running amok, you'd better hide.
Mr Psychologist
User ID: Mr Psychologist

One of the longest-standing folks on staff, local Mr Psychologist is the highest ranking Forum Ninja currently on-site. True to his name, he's a psych major, and is often considered the go-to psychology guy. A somewhat strange fellow, he enjoys anime and often speaks in colorful metaphors.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: As strange as he can be, he's quite knowledgeable in his field, and is quite respected for it, even though he's technically only a student.
  • Highly Visible Ninja: Natch.
  • Psycho Psychologist: Sorta. He has his eccentricities, and has admitted on more than one occasion to being a tad mental. He's not necessarily psychotic as much as he's neurotic.
  • Strange Syntax Speaker: Has an extremely odd manner of typing. While he can be blunt, he'll often pepper bits of Arabic in his posts (as per his Britbongistan belonging), and likes to speak in vivid metaphor. While some believe it makes him a pleasure to speak to, it tends to hinder his ability to write official statements, like rules, due to his use of ambiguous or unclear language.
  • Ultimate Life Form: Happens to be a transhumanist, believing that the human race would be better off pursuing a future of cybernetic enhancements and suchlike.
Noelle
User ID: Lady Noelle

One of the first ten members to join the site. Originally, she was a popular and even well-liked member among the community, but as the site began to grow, she herself grew tired of how the site was being run. In addition, her relationships with other users began to fall apart for various reasons. As a result, she developed a reputation for being a drama whore and a troll. She rarely visits the site anymore.

  • Ax-Crazy: To some extent, due to her drama-fuelling tendencies. She's rather unpopular on the forums as a result.
  • Transgender: She happens to be trans.
  • Un-Person: She barely posts on the forums anymore, and her current username is "This site is worthless". Needless to say, she doesn't really think much of this community anymore.
Yutaka
User ID: Yutaka

One of the longest standing, yet lowest ranking, moderators of the site. Known for being one of the many anime fans of the website.

  • By-the-Book Cop: Is often referred to as "Yulocka" by the community for a reason.
  • Highly Visible Ninja
  • Otaku
  • South of the Border: His Mexican heritage is often the brunt of some playful banter.
  • The Stoic: One of the least active Ninjas, whenever he does post, it can be difficult to discern any kind of emotion in his words. The only thing he seems to become too enthused over is anime.

Dragonball Z is an american differentiation. In Japan it's all just Dragonball.

I guess old men instantly buffing up to shoot moon busting lasers out of their hands and children turning into giant laser blasting monkies aren't over the top.
she didn't say it wasn't over-the-top--she said it wasn't as over-the-top

How do you get it in your body?

What does the high feel like?

Plz answer as thoroughly as you'd like
it's literally found in cough syrup
it gets you really high in overdoses

it's probably the scuzziest, most desperate, white trash way to get high ever

Your only happiness can be found in making yourself miserable. Sure, that revelation doesnt tear you apart at the foundation, but that's because you've already accepted that you will never be truly happy, not even in your most vivid delsuions.

Does it matter if the rodent chooses to eat it's own tail or not? At the end of the day, you are a rodent minus a part of youself: your self-respect.

The fact that you would choose to live without dignity says more than it would if you were forced into the predicament.
He who chooses to be a slave can be more a man than he who was forced, for he still exorcises his human rights and self-awareness.
