Gaming / Got Pokemon Y / Living Dex
« on: August 18, 2015, 06:47:17 AM »
Finally got my 2DS and Pokemon Y today, so I can start working on the Living Dex with my girlfriend. The pokemon Y game was used, so the guy before me already had quite a few pokemon, several of which legendaries and rare ones. Even though I'm gonna start a new game to catch them all myself, I'm still gonna transfer a few of those so that I have something to trade with if necessary. Now I've gotta learn all about breeding and such. Should be fun.

Discuss Pokemon and such, or give me advice.

My favorite part is how it's entirely an Xbox clone, but in some promotional pictures there's people using playstation controllers.

Never heard of this guy before, but this alone gives me a pretty good impression of what he's like.

i'm asking "should i have to"--big difference

should you have to spend money on a game and its console?
ethically speaking, in our capitalist system, that's what we have to do, yes
Like I said, I'm not interested in debating the ethics of emulators or downloading ROM's.

Quote
should you have to download anything to play it on PC?
no--there is no logical/ergonomic reason that you should need anything but the ROM
There is, though. A ROM is just the file format that holds the game's code. It's desgned to only work on and be read by the designated Nintendo system. You need something else, an emulator, to emulate that system / console and run the ROM on it. Saying that there's no logical / ergonomic reason for an emulator is like throwing a DVD disc at your TV screen and complaining that you need something else to make it work because you shouldn't need anything but the disc. I don't know how else I can explain this, but it's pretty basic software / hardware stuff.

Quote
once you weigh the "should you"s, playing the real deal will always round out to be the superior option
Like I said before, the only point I wanted to make is that portraying ROMs as an incredibly tedious, slow and difficult thing to rely on, and comparing them to the authentic experience without acknowledging that obtaining and installing old consoles and games is more than just pressing a button and playing, really isn't very fair. ROM's might not be ethical or desirable to you, but they're quick, easy, free and give a lot of options to the user. Chakas' struggles with the basics like Winrar are not a proper indication of what using an emulator is like.

Been a working man since 2011. It seems like just yesterday I was still in high school...
become teacher
Lord no
I'd need so many anxiety meds and hidden flasks that it's not funny.
I want to be a teacher...

I wanna be lots of things
I mean, I think it'd be really cool to study more professionally and them to teach the basic events of classical antiquity (and in depth military strategy to those who show interest) to America's youth, but I don't think I'd do a good job of actually talking in front of a class.
Teaching would be awesome if you're a confident public speaker and are capable of conveying complex notions in an understandable way. I'd love to teach, but only at university level.

6816
some of these shouldn't count as steps, because they're intuitively obvious to anyone
Sure, but it's still a necessary step everyone has to go through in order to actually use their console and play their game.

For argument's sake, it could also easily be argued that in this day and age, just about anyone interested in playing these games has some basic understanding of how computers and software work. This isn't exactly rocket science or advanced computer tech. You download the .exe file, run it and open the emulator. Sure, it's more complicated than opening a box, but I'd reckon that almost all people who are at the stage of wanting to emulate a game on their PC understand how installing basic software works.

Quote
it's about questioning the necessity of the steps

"should i have to do this?"
Spoiler
no
"why is this necessary?"
Spoiler
it isn't
"would i be better off doing it another way?"
Spoiler
yes
That is all pretty relative and works the opposite way just the same, though.

- do I have to spend a fair amount of money on an outdated system and game that I might not even like? No.
- do I have to spend time searching the internet for a good deal on one and then wait days or weeks for it to be delivered? No.
- why is all of this necessary? It isn't.
- Would I be better off not spending the time and money and instead rather just take 10 minutes to download it and get the extra emulator options? Perhaps.

I'm not gonna argue about the morality of this. Just pointing out that portraying emulation as something tedious, difficult and an unnecessary pain compared to the "real deal", while finding, buying, obtaining and installing the authentic console and game is as simple as pressing a button and playing the game, really isn't a fair comparison.

6817
yeah but how fucking desperate would you have to be to do that

i remember when gaming was literally just

- press the power button
- play

fuck this generation

Quote
explain to me how
1. flip power switch
2. play game

is less complicated than downloading bullshit software
Not gonna get involved in this whole emulation argument this time, but you are making a pretty wrong comparison. Your premise of playing a game in the original / authentic way assumes that all of the necessary one time only steps have already been completed, as opposed to your perception of playing the game through an emulator which (unfairly) is starting at level zero.

In order for this to be a better comparison, you'd have to admit that playing the original game would require:

- obtain the console
- unbox the console
- set up the console (power supply + TV connection)
- obtain the game
- unbox the game
- insert the game
- set the TV to the right channel / settings
- press power button
- play

Most of these are steps that you only have to do once, but the same can be said for an emulator. After having installed the few necessary programs and downloaded the ROM/ISO, all you have to do is:

- click emulator icon
- select game
- play

If you actually know what you're doing, the process of setting up the emulator doesn't take longer than setting up an authentic console and game. Download ROM. Download emulator. Open emulator. Select ROM. Play. Takes me a minute to do. I understand your aversion from needing additional software to play the games, but you have to admit that your comparison isn't an accurate one. Once you've set up the emulator and ROM a single time (something which really isn't hard at all), it doesn't take any more effort to play the game than an authentic console would.

Gaming / Re: Bad RNG
« on: August 15, 2015, 01:30:15 PM »
Destiny's an easy target.

I really dislike RNG in general except when it's used to set up initial conditions. When gameplay is based on RNG and not skill, it's no longer a game but a tedious slot machine. An exception is Borderlands, where you can generally be confident that you won't be wanting for new, better, and more funs guns and gear until endgame, where you start to see more raid elements and more of a grind for the best stuff. At that point, having a cheat program is pretty fun.
I only recently played through BL2 and BLTPS again, and I don't think I kept the same guns and gear for more than a level or two throughout the entire game. Can't remember what it's like in the first one, but a few pieces of gear / guns aside, I feel like you still change out your stuff very often. Not that this makes it bad in any way though.

Strafe / gamma jumping and other forms of advanced movement. Way too little games have this kind of stuff.

6830
Well, you can really start with any pokemon game you want. Luckily for you, aside from Black/White and Black/White 2, each game has its entirely separate story in its own area with its own set of pokemon. They all take place within the same universe and the other games / events are sometimes referenced, but they're all entirely standalone games with no progressing storyline between them.

Another good thing is that many of the older games have already been remade. The classics that many people love are great, but pretty outdated by today's standards. Unless you really want the "authentic" experience, I'd recommend just getting the remakes and playing them. Updated graphics, new features and some tweaks make them worth it, imo.

I'd probably play them in order, as it's a lot less of a pain to start with the basic games and then move up, rather than start with a lot of nice features and then losing them when playing the older games.

I'd say:

- FireRed / LeafGreen (Gen 1 remakes)
- HeartGold / SoulSilver (Gen 2 remakes)
- Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald or Alpha Sapphire / Omega Ruby (gen 3 or gen 3 remakes)
- Diamond / Pearl / Platinum (Gen 4)
- Black / White + Black 2 / White 2 (Gen 5)
- X / Y (Gen 6)

I can since I don't need it.
Thanks man, appreciate it. Could you trade it with me when I'm on X/Y? I won't have ORAS for a while.
I got it and it ended up being a Jolly nature, you're a lucky man.
Nice, thanks a lot. I'll let you know when I get through Y and buy myself ORAS.

It goes until Sep 14.
Is it for mainland EU too, though? So far, I've only seen this for UK, US and Australia. No idea how I'd get it over here.

but they still come to America because American universisites are widely acknowledged as the best in the world.
This isn't enitrely true though. The US has a few dozen amazing universities, but those don't even make up 2% of all American institutions of higher education. As far as I'm aware, the general standard of American higher education really isn't anything special.
