Serious / Re: Trump signs executive order undoing Obama's climate change policies« on: March 30, 2017, 05:42:24 PM »I'm not saying it's illogical. Why does everyone here seem to think I'm saying something I'm not? It's just what your posts seem to suggest. Little of what you say seems to refer to specific situations or policy, but rather to a general "it's too late, might as well stop doing anything". And I'm clearly not the only one who got that impression. Quote It'd be great if everyone was on our wavelength about this, but most nations aren't, so I'm not going to give a solitary fuck if one meaningless policy gets scrapped, am I?You actually really should. This is not just any country we're talking about. The US is the second largest polluter in the entire world. It almost creates more co2 than the entire EU and India combined, and has an emission per capita rate that's almost twice as high as China's. And yet, just last year, it proved to be among the best in the world at lowering emissions under Obama's environmental policies. At the global level, we're now seeing a surge of green energies and CO2 emissions have been staying flat over the past few years despite economic growth. Several dozens of countries have successfully lowered their emissions over the course of the past few years. All of the biggest polluters, whether it's India, China or the EU are all successfully lowering their carbon footprint. Scepticism is healthy, but you are being downright negative in a way that is not fully supported by fact or science. We are making progress and are doing so faster too, all while green energy is becoming more efficient and new methods of dealing with pollution are constantly being developed. Maybe you just didn't know, but we are definitely seeing a global shift towards combatting climate change and taking global warming more seriously. So yeah, you really should care that the second largest polluter in the world, which is also one of the countries best suited to tackle its emissions, is now taking steps to turn back progress made because the climate change denying and anti-vaxxer demagogue in charge is looking to push an anti-science agenda to benefit his buddies in the coal industry. This is objectively bad and should be met with full condemnation and scorn as it could turn out to destabilize this newfound and positive global trend of improving our environment. Either way, I think we agree on the core of this issue. I just think you're being too negative and not entirely in line with what recent facts, figures and policy changes are showing us. These things should be met with the outrage and condemnation they deserve, not a casual shrug because "it was pointless in the first place". 2587

Serious / Re: Trump signs executive order undoing Obama's climate change policies« on: March 30, 2017, 12:06:57 PM »I'm not a climate expert, but maybe we should be investing in the idea of preparing our societies for the impact of climate change, rather than trying to resuscitate an already fucked planet. Seems like a more proactive use of resources. What is up with all these negative and largely unscientific posts in this thread? What we have on our hands is a wildfire. It's already burned down swathes of forest and land, and is guaranteed to cause more damage in the future. This much is clear. So what do we do when faced with such a spreading fire? Do we throw our hands in the air because it's all fucked anyways? Do we shrug and say "yo, shit's on fire anyways so might as well pour some gasoline on it"? Do we tell our firemen to stop trying to contain the blaze and minimize the damage and fallout because it's a "fruitless endeavor", or quit their jobs and instead try to prepare for living in a blackened and burned down wasteland because it would be a better use of time and resources? No, we listen to the experts and people who actually know what they're talking about (these scientists you explicitly said you weren't part of) and follow through on their pretty much universal consensus that looking after the environment, using green energy, lowering our emissions and so on is still actually a good idea with an enormous merit even today. Especially when you consider that there's a pretty much universal scientific consensus and global move towards lower emissions (even China is going green and has been decreasing their emissions over the past few years), this whole attitude of "doesn't matter, might as well say fuck it all" is so illogical and backwards. 2591

It's still, to this day, the only game I have ever sold. As unbiased as I can possibly be: - Uninspired and boring story which is supplemented by lore that you have to unlock in game and then go to Bungie.net to actually be able to read it (from what I remember, at least). - Forgettable and bland music from the otherwise great Marty (only one song on the entire soundtrack stood out to me while playing). - Really, really bad voice acting. - Tedious grind for better gear which you can then use to grind more efficiently for better gear so you can grind even more efficiently for gear. - No matchmaking for the end-game content (Raids), so you need a full party of friends. - PvP didn't hold my attention for more than a few matches. - Really good gunplay and overall gameplay. - Nice graphics and locations. - Extremely repetitive missions. Go there and kill enemies while the door is being hacked x100. - Shitty boss fights. They're just bullet sponges that take ages to kill while almost nothing of interest happens. - Half assed MMO deal that didn't add much. I've heard later DLC improved some of these things and I never got to do the raids (which some say are the best part of the game), but it was a very disappointing game to me. But since you already own it, you might as well give it a go. 2596
Serious / Re: Trump signs executive order undoing Obama's climate change policies« on: March 29, 2017, 03:56:19 AM »I disagree. Haven't we had this exact conversation before? Just because we have caused some form of climate change and are bound to reach a certain higher temperature doesn't mean that we can't stop it from getting worse or mitigate the effects. Saying otherwise goes against what is to my knowledge the vast scientific consensus and ignores the fact that there's still thousands of researchers and experts out there looking for solutions and presenting beneficial policies. There's literally no policy on Earth that's going to halt, or even postpone climate change at this point. China and India are shitting out coal emissions like there's no tomorrow. Even if by some international, logistical miracle we all managed to stop emitting CO2, too late, we fucked it anyway. NASA, for example, agrees. It first concedes that "Humans have caused major climate changes to happen already, and we have set in motion more changes still. Even if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, global warming would continue to happen for at least several more decades if not centuries." But then goes on to add that "But it may not be too late to avoid or limit some of the worst effects of climate change. Responding to climate change will involve a two-tier approach: 1) “mitigation” – reducing the flow of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; and 2) “adaptation” – learning to live with, and adapt to, the climate change that has already been set in motion. " And it's not just them. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Chief also said that it is not too late to avoid even more dangerous rises in temperature. Same goes for other scientists and research papers, who still maintain that "the only way out is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible", or the Yale Climate Connections project saying that such pessimism is a dangerous myth. Even the most renowned US climate change scientist who was one of the first to say that it's too late to still avoid some degree of global warming still says that prompt steps must be taken, including the implementation of a carbon-emission tax on fracking companies and legal actions against governments, to press them to cut down emissions. "The science is crystal clear, we have to phase out emissions over the next few decades. That won’t happen without substantial actions by Congress and the executive branch..." When you forgot about the bath you have filling up and open the door to a half flooded bathroom, you don't go "well, guess that's it, so I might as well turn the faucet open all the way because I've already got water everywhere". Trump's actions are dumb and anti-scientific as shit. Yes, global warming will happen and it's going to change the way we live and interact with our world in the (near) future. But just how bad it's going to get and how we deal with it is still something we can change. This isn't a bomb with a timer set to get off in 2 seconds that we can't do anything about. It's a spreading wildfire that is sure to take place but can still be contained and limited to a significant extent. 2597
