The Flood / Re: What are your plans for the 2019
« on: January 01, 2019, 09:12:46 AM »
They're more goals than plans but:

- Make significant progress in my PhD research
- Publish at least 3 peer reviewed articles / book chapters
- Become partnered on Twitch and get sponsored for my streaming
- Continue casting and hosting at Quake LANs and perhaps branch out into other games as well
- Finalize my company and grow the esports / legal counsel stuff I'm doing

I'm going to drop Mewtwo. Way too floaty for me and I don't like that he's got two specials that are essentially stuns. Simon's been fun so I might give him a shot instead. That or Link.

most of the tough spirit battles have a powerful yet easily exploitable gimmick, with one big gaping obvious weakness which may require a little creativity and lots of knowledge of how all the game's items work

it's understandable that you'd prefer the ones that simply require gameplay finesse though
Yeah, gimmicky things have never been my thing. Dark Souls 3 has an in my opinion really cool boss that you're unfortunately intended to beat with the special attack of a certain weapon that deals chunks of damage and brings him to his knees for easy damage. It's the way you're intended to beat him and even though it's possible to do it without the weapon (it's Dark Souls after all), it's a massive pain and long g rind as you do next to no damage. I much prefer the gameplay finesse as you call it. Another example of this in Smash is the Dr Wily fight. You spawn in with 100hp (stamina battle) and have to beat 8 metal megaman with some boosts in a row (coming at you in pairs of 2) before you fight Dr Mario as the final one. They're very difficult to stun or interrupt and just spam their cannon which fills the stage with projectiles and saps away at your health, making this a basically impossible fight without immense cheesing. It seems that the current go-to strat to clear the fight is playing Lucas and just spamming the same move which heals you, or spamming something like Falcon kick (which sends you flying through their pellets) with high level anti-metal and anti-projectile spirits active. Nothing fun about that when you could put together so many more interesting battles, imo.

The World of Light fight where you take on Ganondorf with the sword in the stamina match has taught me more about playing Smash than everything else in this game. WoL is still pretty disappointing (bad difficulty balance) but that was great.

How'd you like Pauline?
Not sure if I played her yet. This world is huge and I don't play the game often. Just went with the Marth route and unlocked a few different characters so far. The WoL is a cool concept but it could've been so much better. It feels like 90% of the fights are so easy that you don't even have to change your party even when the game prompts you to while most of the other 10% is just stupidly difficult that cheesing or grinding your sprite and skills to max level is the only way you'll stand a chance.

And the problem isn't that it's difficult in a fun or challenging way. Some fights are well done like the high level Ganondorf one where he has more health, more defense and does more damage with melee weapons - one of which he spawns with. It forces you to get your dodging, blocking, countering and spacing on point and outplay him in every way. This is fun to do even if it takes you a dozen tries. But most of the high level fights are just dumb and a chore. Last night I did one where you go up against a team of 3 high level Inklings who all spawn with a variety of blasters, have the trait that they do more damage with ranged projectiles, and have hostile trophy characters spawn in to support them every 15 seconds or so (it's the trophy where some guy sets up a mortar that fires like 10 homing rockets that track you). There's so many projectiles at all times that it's impossible to block or dodge them and they all do over 10% of damage for every hit. It's an impossible challenge no matter how good you are unless you cheese it or grind for days to get the best possible supports at level 100. I beat it by just camping out at the very bottom corner of the map in the hopes of hitting a good charged B attack and throwing one of them off the screen. Took me a good number of tries but managed to get lucky and clear it after a while.

I'm staying at my parents' over christmas and my room here is too small for a desk

Is that the old G Pro?

It's a Logitech G203, I quite like it
Yeah, that's the other one I was thinking it might be. They both have the same rounded back with the RGB line across. I got my girlfriend a G203 for Christmas actually.
Yeah, it's a good mouse. Otherwise my specs are GTX 1080 8GB, 16GB RAM, i7-7700 CPU and a Z170 K3 motherboard with a 240GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. Pretty good for doing modelling/ texturing/ lighting engine work.
Basically the same as mine, only I have a 7700k and Z270 instead. You should look into Ryzen / Threadripper for serious work like that. They're great for those tasks.

My PC is a bit dated, (AMD 6 core 3.5 GHz CPU, EVGA gtx 970 GPU, 24 GB DDR3 ram.) and I just use two flatscreen tv's for monitors. Also, my cable management is just 👌

I don't game that much anymore, I've been focusing on drawing more than anything else as far as hobbies go. I really need to use the Ugee tablet more though.
What do you usually draw on then? Paper or do you have another tablet?
I mostly draw on paper (either sketchbooks or cardstock) with pencil as it's what I'm most comfortable with. I use the Ugee every couple of weeks or so just to get a bit of digital practice in but I plan to get a lot more digital practice in eventually.
Yeah, digital's the future for any type of work really. Paper is basically for "pure" art and technical stuff these days.

Been a while since we've done of these and I just put together my second PC so I figured I'd start one. Post pics and list specs and details while you're at it, or give feedback to whoever.

Spoiler

The room is still pretty bare and needs more decorating but it's function over form for now. It's basically my attic room right underneath the roof with the other stuff and consoles in the main living room downstairs. Another proper office chair and monitor (144hz) to go next to the laptop are on their way. There's two computers for a dual PC setup to stream with (one PC to run the game, the other to do the encoding and streaming) with a gtx 1080 / i7 7700k / 16GB 3200mhz RAM / 970 Evo m.2 SSD in one and a gtx 1070ti / Ryzen 2700x / 16 GB 3000mhz RAM / 860 Evo SSD in the other. The screens are an Asus 144hz 1ms one for most games and an LG Ultrawide for other stuff. Sennheiser headphones, Logitech mouse (G403), keyboard (G810) and webcam (920 HD). Some noise cancelling foam on the wall to improve quality on the Blue Snowball mic.

Spoiler

The three current gen consoles (Switch, Xbox One and PS4) on a Sony Bravia TV. The games themselves and things like my Quake stuff are off-picture. Got a custom piece of Dark Souls art and things like that around the place.

I've also got this Elgato green screen to chroma key out the background. Really cool and collapsible screen to chroma key out the background of the cam.

Being serious though, part of the fun of single person streams / LPs for me is feeling involved. The streamer / player is talking directly to the audience, which is you. When they explain or talk about things, it's meant for you. Throw in more people on the show and that's lost. Now they are instead just talking to each other with you being an onlooker to their interaction. To each his own but to me that makes it a lot less interesting and fun. It's the reason why I don't really ever watch youtubers or streamers like that. There are of course exceptions but it's generally true.

I'm liking the new Smash Bros and Mario Kart though.

Shit "documentary" that has been rebutted and torn to shreds by numerous papers and institutions and has received complaints from several of the people it featured for blatantly misrepresenting their views and research. Among the "experts" whose opinions it relies on are a former professor paid by oil companies who in the past argued against the link between smoking and lung cancer, an entomologist who the UK Parliament itself has issued a statement criticizing him for using inaccurate, outdated and misleading research at a council, and a British tory whose organization lost its status as a charity because it repeatedly spread "factually inaccurate information without a legitimate evidence base" that was directly contradicted by things as simple as satelite pictures.

The film also received official complaints from the UK's media regulator for being so utterly shit and unreliable that it shouldn't be shown on publicly owned channels.

Also, what's up with all these climate change skepticism posts by you? (you can put that one in your video)
