I'm one of the only people I know who actually likes the way his voice sounds when I hear a recording of it.
It's not that your voice is different--that is how you sound. When you speak, you're not really focusing on your own voice as much as you're focusing on whoever you're talking to, so that's why we don't really tend to notice how our own voice really sounds.
Or so I've heard.
I know it's how I sound, I hear myself a lot when my girlfriend's Skype echoes. It's still so damn weird though.

Yeah that's why I think it would have been good if he was't able to properly salute at the end of MGS4.
But then would've been the point?
The entire reason he salutes is to milk MGS3. The cigar lighting scene achieves the whole "he's too weak" aspect better.
It's just needless fan service that kinda makes the series' strongest moment less impactful in retrospect.
It would have made the miliking less milky.
