The Flood / Which of these sounds better?
« on: December 17, 2014, 01:19:52 PM »
Marines, best described as a combination of Halo ODSTs and Spartan-III's. Can't decide which one is better. They launch from orbit in 4-6 man pods, and then storm a battlefield and fuck shit up in a manner similar to the Brotherhood of Steel and Spartan-III's.

Will anyone be partaking in this challenge to watch all the LOTR and Hobbut films in nearly a day's worth of video? Me and a bunch of friends are planning on it once TBoTFA is released.

The Flood / The Hobbit was amazing [spoilers]
« on: December 12, 2014, 04:18:36 PM »
Just finished TBoTFA. I loved it, it's much closer to the book than 2, and Fili, Kili and Thorin are all killed off. Smaug is also killed like, 15 minutes in even though the film is over 3 hours.

Also, we have an Aragorn reference.

« on: December 11, 2014, 01:55:01 AM »
So can anyone (Particularly bongs, as I know it applies here) tell me why universities seem to look at your extra curricular activities and what you do outside of school and shit when doing a course? Like, what does it matter if I just play video games with my spare time but I got A's at A level? Surely your grades are more important than your spare time activities, right?

The Flood / Could this work as a government?
« on: December 10, 2014, 05:02:08 PM »
Factors to factor in here before I begin;
-This would cover many hundreds of planets
-Humans were a powerful military at a time more advanced species were down to their last dregs in terms of vessels and weapons when they met, meaning huans were dominant in numbers for what they lacked in technology

The Imperium is the main empire in my works. It lasted over 3 centuries before the Fall of Earth, but it has a system that gradually corrupted throughout the years. When first started by huamns, it was intended to bring peace to the two warring alien factions at the time, which it did. However, some very xenophobic humans got top positions of power and gradually began to influence the laws and various systems of th Imperium. English (Or huamn as it is known by then) is established as the Imperial Standard language that all aliens must speak. The economy is based off the exisitng human one (Though that is more because the alien economy is more or less nonexistant by that point) and behind the scenes, it is actually enforced that there is always a lower class of workers, to make sure that there are always people who are never given the opportunity to speak out against the Imeprium but also indoctrinated from birth to swear loyalty, so that they will not rise up. The police and military are extremly hard to distinguish and public execution is common for political dissenters. There is an Order of Species in which species are ranked in tiers, with humans at the top and secies ranked based on their military power and society. This causes cities and districts to be deemed (species) only, essentially segregating the populace and making sure that they cannot join forces. However, this creates several rogue militias, which gradually rise in power, causing the Imperial Parliament to make a dedicated extermination campaign which is largely successsful until the S'pher invasion and also begin stockpiling supplies for billions at an uncharted system to be used as a refuge in case the worst happened.

Altogether, this society was functioning for hundreds of years and would likely to have continued to function due to the success of crackdowns on rebellion.

If they don't kill off thorin, fili and kili, I will be pissed. That sort of is what brings about the undertone of the book for me; the true heirs to durin all die when they finally get what they have been waiting their entire lives for.

Alright. I'm posting this as a general background to my science-fiction universe- Exodus. It is just a general backstory to the current setting and serves to explain some of the inter-species relations, technology and major timeline events.

Spoiler
When humans ascended into space, they came into first contact in the midst of a civil war between two alien factions. Both factions saw humans as an enemy on the side of the other, and humans were temporarily at war. However, one faction- the Collective- realised their mistake, and offered to help the new empire at a cost; humans assisted in repelling the other, and became a military power, with many more resources to compensate for weaker technology. Gradually, they gained influence over many aspects of the Collective eventually restructuring into the Imperium. However, many xenophobic attitudes remained from the brief skirmishes, and the Imperium's laws gradually became more and more pro-human, making many leave Imperial space to form militias and guerilla armies. With an increasing amount of these sentiments, the Imperial Parliament realised that an uprising was inevitable, so a contingency was devised. Exodus was a system on the edge of known space, and had two habitable worlds and many ore-rich bodies. It was built up and classified, being a 'nuclear bunker' system in case of a major rebellion. However, rebellion never came, due to a series of anomalies in space created from mining of elements from an alternate dimension known as the Arva, with properties that could bend and completely ignore known physics. Such anomalies could be simple cracks in a planet or complete mysteries the size of entire star systems; two of the largest being one that separated known space from unexplored Rogue Territory, the other surrounding the Sol System, both of which hampering space travel and bending light. In 2654, these anomalies would be used as wormholes by a new empire; The S'pher, exterminating humans to stop the practice of this mining by making a swift blow at Earth in 2654. In the ensuing 20 years, all human territory would be taken apart from the Exodus and a handul of other systems. Here, humans would build and prepare for retaking their planets. In 2684 they would launch a reclamation campaign into the first territories, soon growing into a huge multi frontal assault across hundreds of worlds. In 2702, the final battle would dawn as thousands of ships and milions of personnel would begin the invasion of Earth and decide the endgame. One squad would find out the reason why the S'pher were doing and (This is the pplot of the book) decide between the fate of humans and the entire universe.

TL;DR: Anyway, if you want me to continue posting stuff like this, just leave a reply. I know there's a few people here who've been helpful in my various projects and I hope to continue posting stuff from my writing!

The Flood / Just some stuff I've need to get off my chest
« on: December 03, 2014, 07:32:59 PM »
This is just going to be a rant thing, but it something in doing more for myself than anyone else. If you're not going to actually contribute anything then please don't bother, because in seriously not in the mood. I don't expect anyone to read this, but I'll probably be deleting this by tomorrow regardless.

Alright, well I gues one thing people should know about me is that I don't like putting my problems on other people. I don't tell people anything about me because I don't want them worrying for something that doesn't involve them and I get annoyed when people request information on how my day was and etc. I'm that person who doesn't want anything for Christmas or any birthday celebrations because I don't want people wasting their money on me. So the fact I'm doing this is sort of a sign of weakness for me but its something I feel I need to do.

But another thing I sometimes get is these spurts where I just suddenly get all depressive and sad for a while. It tends to happen when I'm in deep thought as I just believe that life in general is shit.
Spoiler
Read BC's there'd for that. But essentially I just don't see what is worth living for right now. Nothing major is happening in terms of space exploration and my view is that I'm unlikely to be alive when we start making useable fusion reactors and spacecraft and shit, which heavily depresses me. As far as I'm concerne the world is just getting shittier every day
In general, I end up thinking dark thoughts and stuff which I realise probably isn't healthy. But I've come to realise that if my family was killed, I wouldn't care. I would be able to take someone's life if it was necessary and that everything dies, so there's no point trying to fight it. But recently these kinds of thoughts are becoming more and more common, until a couple of days ago I accidentally cut my finger on a knife while making a sandwich. Nothing major, just essentially a paper cut but I realised just how sharp the knife was and realised how easy it would be to slit someone's throat with it. Which I recognise is not a healthy mindset, when walking into a room, you're immediately analysing why you could use as a makeshift weapon or what you would do if you were forced to defend yourself. [Yeah. Yeah. Le epic crawling and all that. I know this sounds as fedora as all holy hell.]

The other thing that constantly occupies my mind more permanently is my resentment of other people, being around other people and the fact that I do not trust anyone. I can name five people I trust outright- two of them friends since as long as I can remember, one because he doesn't really care but he listens to what I say and the other two are people I know from the Internet. And only one of them I have ever trusted with this kind of thing- I was very tempted to make an alt for this but decided not to bother. But I basically have an inherent distrust. I can't accept good things happening, or people wanting to be a friend because I imagine people like I am- and I become friends with most people because it will benefit me later on. Because I can gain an advantage from them, so I view people as doing the same to me, hence why I cannot trust many people. I should also note at this point that I do not trust any of my family with details regarding my personal life. I have little respect for my father, I like my mother but she massively overreacts and I don't know anyone else well enough to trust with stuff, which I believe is why I need to make this thread on the Internet, where I am ultinately just some dude on a keyboard. The anonymity of the Internet means I find it easier to trust with my own stuff than other IRL people. When forced to be in large groups, I become anxious and disoriented as there is too much going on and too many sounds and it ends up overwhelming, and I need to sit down in a quiet empty place to recuperate.

I guess that leads on to writing. Although I enjoy world building, I know that I'll likely never make it as a writer because I'm shit. But for me, it was never about a job or anything. It was simply about creating something to actually work for. Because I am just bored. Of everything. If life in general. To me, it's just a routine. School, eat. Sleep repeat. Nothing interesting is happening. So I make things up. I create this fantasy world where I can tie in my knowledge of real science (This was the only reason I picked A Level physics btw) to something I create. I can-for four or five hours between school and sleep- just immerse myself in this works and forget how shit and boring the real world is. It's the same reason why I poured over 1,000 hours into Skyrim in a few weeks, or why I have 100% completion of both 'new' Fallout games, read every codex entry in Mass Effect and read the books on Halo and joined a website just for talking about the story. It's why I play video games, read books, watch films and TV. Because my world view is that everything you do is just procrastinating until your body gives up and dies. Only thing is that a couple hundred years ago, you could find a side quest fairly easily by wandering out into the wilderness, putting up a fence and building your own house and growing crops. Now it's just spending hours on a job so you can buy basic food and a house so you can do your job and everything you care about eventually is kicked out of the back door and forgotten. It's the reason I don't do any schoolwork at home; I need something to do like writing or I lose motivation for everything. I lose motivation and I just stop and life just becomes a pointless maze that you can't actually escape, and that's when I begin wondering what the point of bothering is anyway, when you can't trust the government or banks to actually make sure what little you have is worth something. I'm just stuck in this endless train of thought as I go from one thought to another. Especially when I constantly add that I likely cannot get into anything I want to do; physics? I'm bad at maths (Teachers keep me on the course because I'm interested. That's it) and writing/ indie games are a slim chance at best, with landing a job at the likes of 343i even lower. I just.. Don't know what to do and I feel that I genuinely need some advice.

I PM'd Cheat and he's cool with it. But there's no point so I was just wondering I people would be interested in me posting something short about a certain aspect or event or something in my SciFi universe every week. I just thought I'd do a poll because there wouldn't be any point if no one is interested.

Anyway, I just thought it would be a cool way to get some of my work out there.

From what I've seen, they both utilise both infantry and armoured support, both do a similar role aside from one generally operates from a ship. I want to try and apply this basic setup to my writing, but I'm a bit unsure as to what the difference is as both seem to do the same thing.

In my thing, the army is primarily a terrestrial fighting force that operates from established bases planetside and is the first line of defence in a ground invasion. Alternatively, the marines operate from an orbital station or ship and are primarily used in boarding and defence actions, as well as being deployed from an orbital cruiser in drop pods and aircraft. In invasions, the marines are used as a primary assault force to take ground, before the army is deployed to assist in combat operations and secure/ lck down an area with a clean sweep of enemy combatants. Ultimately, the army is generally made of local recruits and only receives basic genetic modifications and no power assisted armour, whereas the marines receive full armour and mods, and are selected from the very best soldiers.

The Flood / Because some people here know more about guns than me
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:30:56 PM »
Just need help with something.

In my universe the classification for ammo (ballistics) is as follows;

SMG/ pistol - 8.00x69 round

AR, BR, DMR, Carbine- 12.7x33 round

Snipers, DMR, LMG, HMG- 12.7x99 round (As I understand, this is close enough a .50 round)

Anyway, I know that a 7.62/5.56 is a large/ small rifle round (respectively) and that for a pistol to fire a 8.00 round it must be far bigger. In my futuristic timeline, guns and caliber are up scaled to counter thicker armour and shields (Energy weapons and mass drivers exist, just that they're highly prohibited and expensive compared to the abundance, easy to make and cheap ballistics) so that they're more effective. Do these seem decent as rounds for the various guns?

If it helps, I have a specialised pistol that fires a .50 round and a round that is fitted with dozens of nano explosives. Standard 5.56 and 7.62 rounds are used by police forces and are te types available to civilians, though the Nanoplaye and Arvaplate armour in use by the military is more or less immune to this kind of caliber.

On mobile. Well, it's always been like this. Can't see any usernames and there's no button to click off, meaning you have to refresh the page.

Also, I've just noticed this. Half the time images appear as white squares with a grey interior. Is this a glitch on the mobile sure or something? If its a feature, is there a way to get it to display the image?

The Flood / Would this be feasible as a time period (In terms of pacing)
« on: November 28, 2014, 07:56:31 AM »
-Present to 2160-ish- human expansion through space and colonisation of other worlds

-2160-2214-First interplanetary war

-2221- First contact. Aliens are in the midst of a civil war, which humans opt to avoid

-2260-2263 Human colony is attacked by accident. Human forces (Note, they have much more troops and infrastructure as opposed to aliens, though the tech is weaker) counterattack and choose a side. They gradually force the weaker army back to their homeworld and force a surrender.

-2263-2346- The shattered alien empires begin to rebuild based off the superior human economy and military. Humans rapidly become a powerful force and eventually assume full control in what becomes the Imperial Age. Xenophobic attitudes from the previous war remain and the Imperium gradually becomes a massively human-centric empire that only benefits the humans

-2346-2654- The Imperial age, of alien oppression. Realising that rebellion is possible, a newly discovered system is prepared as a fallback named Exodus, for the event humanity is pushed to lose dominance.

-2654- Earth is attacked by a new empire called the S'pher, that destroys the human army completely and pushes them out of their territory. The humans fall back to Exodus, and launch a counteroffensive in 2683 to reclaim their territory, making a multifrontal assault back into their lost systems. In 2701, they launch the final invasion of Earth and begin the event eventually called the Endgame.

Does this sound like the pacing is about rioght or should it be slowed down to roughly half the time?
