The Flood / Music recommendations
« on: November 03, 2018, 06:49:59 AM »
I've been listening to my playlist a lot recently while doing uni work, and I've been looking to expand it with some more stuff than the ~300 songs I've got right now. I can link the playlist if anyone particularly wants to see it but the general gist of it is going on bands I like and just clicking "add album" on all their stuff.

Anyway, I figured people here might know some good recommendations.

stuff i like - i added a note for what stuff I have all albums down in case there's something by an artist I've missed
Muse (all albums + most B sides)
Queens of the Stone Age (all albums)
Royal Blood (both albums)
Foo Fighters (most albums)
Kasabian
Kaiser Chiefs
Pendulum
The Prodigy
Nirvana

I've also got the big songs from AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple but I'm still working my way through all their catalogue.

So yeah, some recommendations would be great, especially stuff more similar to Muse/ QoTSA/ Royal Blood/ Foo Fighters as that's the stuff that makes up a bulk of my playlist and what I've been listening to a lot lately.

Totally not Copying Verb Edition

So anyway yeah, I've been interested in playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for a long time but it doesn't run on Windows 10, so I never got round to it. Anyway, now that it's available as an OG Xbox BAckwards Compatible title on Xbox One, I've decided to do a playthrough. My only real experience with BioWare games is the Mass Effect Trilogy, with the first one being my favourite, and I'm told that ME1 borrowed very heavily from Knights of the Old Republic in its structure. That, with the endless praise the two games get online, has given me high expectations on what to expect (though I'm pretty in the dark about the actual story of the game, surprisingly).

In the grand tradition of copying Verbatim's playthrough threads, I'll try to post updates whenever I play. I'll detail my character in the OP too.

Serious / Make the Moon Great Again

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/science-environment-41519682

Quote
US Vice-President Mike Pence has expressed the intention for America to send humans back to the Moon's surface.

Speaking to the National Space Council, he said Earth's satellite would be a "stepping stone" to the wider exploration of the Solar System.

"We will return astronauts to the Moon - not only to leave behind footprints and flags, but to build the foundation we need to send Americans to Mars and beyond," he stated.

The statement drew loud applause.

Mr Pence said something similar when he visited the Kennedy Space Center in July, but he was less specific then about boots on the lunar soil.

It may give stronger hints to the direction of thinking that will be pursued when the Trump White House finally gets its nomination in place for Nasa administrator.

Representative Jim Bridenstine, a Republican from Oklahoma, is the Trump pick to take the job but has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.

In his speech to the newly re-established advisory body (this was the first time it had convened in nearly a quarter of a century), Mr Pence said US space policy had lost its edge and needed to reassert itself.

"The president has charged us with laying the foundation for America to maintain a constant commercial human presence in low-Earth orbit. From there, we will turn our attention back toward our celestial neighbours," he said.

The speech, delivered in front of Space Shuttle Discovery at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, was backed up by an earlier op-ed in the Wall Street Journal .

But neither speech nor the newspaper article mentioned timelines or funding numbers.

President Obama had rejected the Moon as a return destination.

"We've been there," he said bluntly, and told Nasa to take a more direct route to the Red Planet, setting the ambition to "send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth" by the mid-2030s.

He approved the development of a big new rocket, the Space Launch System, and a deep space capsule called Orion. All of this hardware is still some years away from carrying people.

A project to use the systems, when they became available, to visit and capture a small asteroid, was promptly dropped when Donald Trump became president.

Instead, Nasa has recently started looking at the feasibility of building some kind of lunar space station that it refers to as the Deep Space Gateway.

This would be a testing ground for astronauts and their equipment as they move away from Earth and the low-orbiting International Space Station.

International partners, such as Russia, Europe and Canada, have been asked to think about the technologies they could contribute.

Nasa's acting administrator, Robert Lightfoot, issued a statement later on Thursday, which read: "Nasa has been directed to develop a plan for an innovative and sustainable programme of exploration with commercial and international partners to enable human expansion across the Solar System, returning humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilisation, followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations."

Speaking last week at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, the US rocket entrepreneur Elon Musk said he hoped to send humans to Mars stating in 2024 .

The SpaceX company's CEO and chief designer has plans for a rocket that is even bigger than the SLS. This behemoth, which he says could carry 100 people, is dubbed the BFR, or "Big Falcon Rocket".

The last astronaut mission to the Moon was Apollo 17, which saw Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spend 75 hours on the lunar surface. With budgets tightening, Nasa was instructed by then US president Richard Nixon to direct its future efforts away from the Moon to the Skylab space station and the development of the shuttle.

It's that time of the year where the new administration announces its plans to skew nasa in a new direction instead of letting them spend any significant time on one project. But hey, moon mission let's fuckin go.

Gaming / Making some custom covers

So I have all the Halo Limited Edition copies, and it's a right pain in the arse if I want to actually play any of them because of how many layers of box they're kept in. So, I decidedto buy some blank XB1 game cases and make somecustom box art for my collection. Still not 100% on all of them but I'm quite happy with them right now.

I also did them for the ones without limited editions for consistency.

Halo CE

Halo 2

Halo 3

Halo 3: ODST

Halo 4

Halo 5

Halo: Reach

Halo Wars

Halo Wars 2

I'm consideringmoving the UNSC logo from Halo 3 to the cover of Wars 1 and moving the Covenant insignia of Wars to HAlo 2 to replace the Mark of Shame, then replacing the UNSC logo on 3 with the ONI logo. idk though maybe I will maybe I won't. Maybe put UNSC on HW2 then put Spirit of Fire on Wars 1.

https://www.reddit.com/r/finlandConspiracy/comments/52f5ae/the_finland_conspiracy_and_all_you_need_to_know/

Quote
The Finland conspiracy states that Finland is not a real country. Not only is it not a real country but there is actually no landmass there at all, and the space between Sweden and Russia is actually empty ocean.

Now I realize that this notion seems ridiculous but that is why the conspiracy works, and why people are afraid to speak out against the existence of Finland, so I would ask you to approach the evidence I put forward here with an open mind.

Finland was first created some time during the Cold War between Russia and the West. It was also around this time that environmentalism and the idea of preserving our planet was really taking off, and it is due to both of those things that two of the main players in the Finland conspiracy came to work closely with each other, Russia and Japan.

Japan-Soviet relations had always been shaky at best, but also incredibly secretive. Even as early as 1925 Japan and the Soviet Union had secret deals with each other regarding fishing rights between the two countries, with the Soviet Union giving up much of it's fishing rights to Japan with seemingly no explanation as to why.

These secretive treaties and alliances continued right up until just before the fall of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev made trips to Japan months before the fall of the Soviet Union stating the entire time how the relations between them were improving, even when Soviet relations with the rest of the world were worsening.

In fact the entire past 100 years of Japanese-Russian relations bring up many unanswered questioned.

Why at the height of WW2, were the battles between these two countries minimal despite being on opposing sides?

Why did Japan sign a peace treaty with Russia in 1941, just months before their allies, Germany, went to war with Russia?

Why were relations between Japan and Russia always good throughout the Cold War, despite the major geopolitical differences between the countries, and close geographical positions that you think would cause tensions?

The answer is simple, they shared a common secret. A common asset that worked in both of their favours. And that asset was Finland.

It's unclear when Finland was first thought up, some say it was during the Cold War, and others say it was as far back as the 1920's, but the necessity of Finland is quite simple.

Japan can fish in the region of ocean between Sweden and Russia without worry for environmental repercussions, after all, nobody's going to expect fishing regulations to be broken in a place where everyone thinks there's a landmass will they? And in return Russia get a percentage of the fish to distribute amongst their populace.

It's a simple case of fishing the Finnish Sea, transporting it across Russia, (that was the real reason for the construction of the Trans-Siberian railway by the way), and then shipping it from the Eastern Russian coast to Japan under the disguise of 'Nokia' products.

This is why Nokia is the largest 'Finnish' company, and it is also why Japan is the largest importer of Nokia products, despite the fact that very few people own Nokia phones in the country.

There are clearly some unanswered questions to this conspiracy that I'll try and address below.

1- What about Finnish people? Are they all in on the conspiracy?

A. No. People from Finland genuinely believe they're from Finland. In reality they are from small towns on either the Eastern part of Sweden, the Western part of Russia, or the Northern part of Estonia.

2- What about all of Finland's other exports other than Nokia?

A. Finland's three biggest, and three most well known areas of industry are Oil, Tech, and Software. The oil is gathered in offshore platforms where the rest of us believe the landmass of Finland is, (again the Japanese get to avoid rigging regulations in this respect), the Tech companies have already been explained above with the Nokia post, and Software companies can easily redirect their IP Address through the Finnish sea. As for other Finnish exports, well, claiming Santa comes from your country isn't a viable way to get people to believe in it.

3- What about Helsinki? That is an enormous city on the world stage.

A. Helsinki is located in Eastern Sweden. It's not like the people flying there would notice.

4- What about everywhere else in Finland? There's a lot to it and it couldn't all be made up.

A. 99% of Finland is forest. A lot of it doesn't need to be accounted for when addressing Finnish geography.

5- Why do other countries go along with it?

A. At first it was a sign of goodwill between Western Countries and the Soviet Union. A bargaining chip that could be played. But Finland has since evolved to something much more. An idealistic placeholder for what countries should aspire to. No real country could so consistently place first in Education, Healthcare, Gender Equality, Literacy Rates, National Stability, The least corrupt government in the world, Freedom of the press. It's a concept for countries and people to aspire to. But that's where the problems about Finland's existence is disputed. no country in the world can possibly be that good.

6- Why the name Finland?

A. The country was originally made for fishing. What do fish have? Fins. Thus Finland.

7- What about the Finnish language?

A. Look up the similarities between Japanese and Finnish. It may surprise you how similar they are. Which is weird considering the vast distances between them.

8- I'm Finnish and your attack on my people and culture is insulting.

A. I'm not insulting Finnish people or culture. I don't even deny that there is Finnish culture. When you have a collective of a few million people identifying as Finnish then of course a culture will be built around it. I'm simply saying that that the landmass of Finland isn't actually there. It doesn't mean there can't be a culture or identity of being Finnish however.

9- This is an enormous conspiracy to keep secret, how could nobody else of realized it?

A. Other people have realized it. But imagine the ridiculousness of the statement 'I don't believe Finland exists'. Even if we did have undeniable proof of something put in front of us we would still hold the opinion that most of our friends, family, and acquaintances hold to not disrupt social convention. It's part of the human condition.

10- What about GPS and Satellite Images?

A. It's manipulated and forged. In the parts of Estonia, Sweden, and Russia that are allocated as 'Finnish zones' the GPS locations are changed to match that of Finland. Satellite images are forged. This is how that part of the world really looks

>he hasn't been finpilled yet

So the turtlebeach x12's I've been using for 5+ years broke. I stepped on them by accident a couple years back and it created a little crack on the side. I tried picking them up today by that speaker and they fell apart and are currently held together by the wire. They still work but aren't much good for their surround sound function anymore.

So yeah. Headset recommendations. Preferably on the cheap, I just want basic surround sound functionality and decent quality for playing games - nothing too fancy. I'm considering getting the same thing again as it served me well for a long time, and only broke because of me accidentally stepping on them.

Oh here's a picture

Serious / Terrorist attack on london
« on: March 22, 2017, 10:40:27 AM »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39355940

Quote
A police officer has been stabbed in the Houses of Parliament in central London, in what police are treating as a terrorist incident.
Commons Leader David Lidington told MPs the "alleged assailant was shot by armed police".
Staff inside Parliament were told to stay inside their offices.
The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said police told her someone had been shot and MPs said they heard "three or four gunshots".
Tom Peck, political editor for the Independent, tweeted: "There was a loud bang. Screams. Commotion. Then the sound of gunshots. Armed police everywhere."
Prime Minister Theresa May was seen being ushered into a silver Jaguar car as what sounded like gunfire rang out at Parliament during the incident.
A Downing Street source confirmed that Prime Minister Theresa May was "OK".
Live coverage
Press Association political editor Andrew Woodcock witnessed the scenes unfolding from his office window overlooking New Palace Yard.
"I heard shouts and screams from outside and looked out, and there was a group of maybe 40 or 50 people running round the corner from Bridge Street into Parliament Square.
"They appeared to be running away from something.
"As the group arrived at the Carriage Gates, where policemen are posted at the security entrance, a man suddenly ran out of the crowd and into the yard.
"He seemed to be holding up a long kitchen knife.
"I heard what sounded like shots - I think about three of them - and then the next thing I knew there were two people lying on the ground and others running to help them.
"Armed police were quickly on the scene and I heard them shouting to people to get out of the yard."
'Mowed down'
An eye witness, Radoslaw Sikorski, a senior fellow at Harvard's Centre for European Studies, posted a video to Twitter purporting to show people lying injured in the road on Westminster Bridge.
He wrote: "A car on Westminster Bridge has just mowed down at least 5 people."
Scotland Yard said it was called to a firearms incident on Westminster Bridge amid reports of several people injured.
Transport for London said Westminster underground station has been shut at the police's request, and buses diverted.
Mr Lidington said: "It seems that a police officer has been stabbed, that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police.
"An air ambulance is currently attending the scene to remove the casualties.
"There are also reports of further violent incidents in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster but I hope colleagues on all sides will appreciate that it'd be wrong of me to go into further details until we have confirmation from the police and from the House security authorities about what is going on."

I guess it was just a matter of time

Just seen it. Fantastic film, probably some of the best performances I've seen by Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman. As a farewell to the X-Men series for those two, it's pretty much perfect. It also does a great job of setting up future X-Men films if they decide to go that route.

Otherwise, it's great to finally get a wolverine film that doesn't hold back on the blood and violence you'd expect from such a character.

Serious / Fuck yeah, we (UK) are getting laser guns
« on: January 05, 2017, 03:42:25 AM »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-38510344

Quote
The UK Ministry of Defence has officially awarded a £30m contract to produce a prototype laser weapon.
The aim is to see whether "directed energy" technology could benefit the armed forces, and is to culminate in a demonstration of the system in 2019.
The contract was picked up by a consortium of European defence firms.
The prototype will be assessed on how it picks up and tracks targets at different distances and in varied weather conditions over land and water.
Peter Cooper, from the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), headquartered at Porton Down, said the project "draws on innovative research into high power lasers so as to understand the potential of the technology".
He added that this could "provide a more effective response to the emerging threats that could be faced by UK armed forces".
The MoD has been finalising the agreement with the consortium, called UK Dragonfire, for several months, but it has now formally announced them as the winning contractor.
'Ahead of the curve'
A spokesperson for the MoD told BBC News that the demonstrator was not being developed to counter any specific threat, but to assess whether such weaponry could be delivered as a capability for the armed forces.
But in general, directed energy weapons could potentially be used to destroy drone aircraft, missiles, mortars, roadside bombs and a host of other threats.
The US military has been experimenting with high energy lasers for decades. But, until recently, technical hurdles had prevented them from being used on the frontline.
However, the US Navy fielded a laser weapon system called Laws for testing on the USS Ponce during a deployment to the Arabian Gulf starting in 2014.
It hit targets aboard a small boat which was directed to speed towards the navy ship and also shot a small drone out of the sky.
The Minister for Defence Procurement, Harriet Baldwin, said that "truly ground-breaking projects like the Laser Directed Energy Weapon" would "keep this country ahead of the curve".
If the demonstration is successful, the first laser weapons could come into service in the mid-2020s.
The UK Dragonfire consortium comprises the companies MBDA, Qinetiq, Leonardo-Finmeccanica GKN, Arke, BAE Systems and Marshall ADG.

Gaming / Titanfall 2's review embargo lifts today
« on: October 24, 2016, 09:09:20 AM »
So Respawn are letting reviewers release their impressions just about a week before release - full multiplayer AND campaign reviews. I think this is very promising for the state of the game, if Respawn is confident enough to give full access this early.

Dunno how many people here still care about Titanfall 2, but it's changed a lot since the Technical Test according to player feedback. Not many places have been reporting it though because it doesn't generate as much clickbait traffic as DAE TITANFALL 2 IS SHIT??? does.

Embargo ends in about 2 hours, but some sites have already posted theirs and a few notable figures from Titanfall's fanbase were given access to a PC capture event about a month back where they were allowed to include fuckloads of footage. If anyone's interested, this link is compiling reviews as they come out (Yeah I know >leddit xD it's still a useful place to find info). It seems very promising thus far.
