I guess that makes sense, but its still a valid criticism in a movie. One that goes out of it's way to be artsy for the sake of being artsy, without actually saying or doing anything substantial. I just think it shows an unwillingness to understand what the director was going for with a particular shot. It's easy to look at an "artsy" scene and think "Wow, this is so stupid and pretentious and doesn't add anything to the movie," but how hard are you trying to find meaning?
Unless you're of the opinion that you shouldn't have to think to hard about movies, and I'd fundamentally disagree with that. You would probably despise Lars von Trier.
You should definitely think hard about movie and film, but you can find deep meaning in an episode of BBT if you stretch yourself hard enough. Which is why the creator's intent is everything. If the creator has an artsy scene that's deliberately designed with meaning and symbolism, that's not pretentious. If he has an artsy scene so that people think the movie is deep, without actually putting in anything to make it so, that's pretentious.

you can, but one reason makes the film needlessly pretentious and one doesn't
this whole "you just say it as a synoynm for dislike" business is asinine - I would just say I disliked the movie
I just don't see how it's even a problem if a director is pretentious while simultaneously having something to be pretentious about. If a movie kicks ass on every level, the director has a right to be proud of his work.
You act like it's a bad thing or a criticism, when it's not. I can't think of a single conventionally good movie that prefers style over substance, and I don't even think preferring style over substance necessarily makes you pretentious.
Pretentious is when someone makes a style-over-substance movie, yet claims otherwise. He claims that it has more substance than it does. But if a director makes a flashy action movie that's very stylish and self-indulgent, it's not pretentious if the director acknowledges that.
I guess that makes sense, but its still a valid criticism in a movie. One that goes out of it's way to be artsy for the sake of being artsy, without actually saying or doing anything substantial.

everything you do in a film should contribute to what the film is about or what it's trying to express
if the main character is clinically depressed and the movie is in black and white, the style has a content reason
if it's just because the creator thought it looked cool, that's being pretentious
You can do it for both reasons. I can't think of a single notable director who doesn't do it for both reasons.

when something is done for style alone, and no content reason, it's pretentious
not personal dislike or like that's pretty dumb
Sometimes you just wanna do cool shit, because it's fun, and it takes talent and vision.
that's being pretentious everything you do in a film should contribute to what the film is about or what it's trying to express if the main character is clinically depressed and the movie is in black and white, the style has a content reason if it's just because the creator thought it looked cool, that's being pretentious

When the movie clearly parades itself around with unnecessary camera angles, concepts, or cinematic techniques that while flashy, serve no use in the broader themes or meanings of the film. It's like if I wrote a novel and used a cursive font for the entire text.
maybe you want to give the impression that the entire story is some character's diary--that's not pretentious
anyway, it seems that i was right
you personally deem those techniques unnecessary (ie. you don't like them) and that = pretentious
that's a very pretentious way of going about expressing your dislike of a film
when something is done for style alone, and no content reason, it's pretentious not personal dislike or like

obsessed with itself, thinks it's the best thing ever even before it's released, etc
really not a hard phrase to grasp
you just keep piling on more meaningless definitions
"obsessed with itself"--what does that mean
how can a movie be obsessed with itself

maybe that's just you being triggered by a word a lot of people use correctly
pretentious is a very specific word that refers to when something is so full of itself yet masquerades as high-high-concept art. Which fits Memento to a t.
i haven't seen the movie so i can't comment on that
"full of itself" is another meaningless term, though
literally what does that even mean
obsessed with itself, thinks it's the best thing ever even before it's released, etc really not a hard phrase to grasp

What are you all freaking out about? That military vets (who are known for being conservative) support the Republican candidate? Big deal.

you kinda do
even if I did come up with it, who cares? I wouldn't have the means to produce a film around it
i'm just saying--the word "pretentious" just gets thrown around all the time, and it seems like another non-word to describe anything that you don't like, anything you don't understand, or anything you wish you had the talent to write or come up with

Memento is so pretentious and overrated
The Prestige is his best one
"pretentious" has become code for "i wish i came up with that"
I'm not a screenwriter
you don't have to be x to be envious of people who are
that's kind of the whole point of envy, actually
you kinda do even if I did come up with it, who cares? I wouldn't have the means to produce a film around it

aren't you always shitposting about how we should listen to women or whatever
I'm always posting about how we should respect women just as much as men, which is apparently a wildly controversial opinion here
Just because a woman says something doesn't mean it's true, and just because a man says something doesn't mean it's true. This guy got charged with rape, doesn't mean we should start a "lol how IRONIC" media frenzy against him.
all men are rapists
don't be so down on yourself dude

Good for her?
I don't get how this whole "BARELY ANY WOMEN WOULD QUALIFY" shit is supporting your argumemt against allowing them to join. It supports mine. Your whole doomsday scenario where the military falls apart if thousands of women join is invalid if not nearly that many are qualifying.

Okay, that's kinda cute. Although it would be too late for me at that point, any girl that touched the top of my head in a positive way instantly gets me.
She gets drunk and shakes her male friends by the head and tells them not to fall in love with her. My favorite ones: 5 - She told the original story of Cinderella with glee.
Victor: That's sadistic.
Bridgette: Cool, right?! 11 - She liked to sing songs about what she was doing/feeling, often singing to herself when no one else was around. 14 - She rescued a basil plant and put him in a cup and named him Mr. Jenkins. This became her pet all summer long, and she watered and fussed over him every day, even decorating his cup with letter scraps found around the storage room. If you were wondering about the plant Natalie had during her eviction, that was Mr. Jenkins. She was just one of the most genuine people on there. The fact that I missed a lot of this because I didn't get All Access this season makes me sad. She got really screwed over in the editing on the TV version, too, barely any screentime and they pretty much villainized her in it. Instead we get a bunch of footage of Ratcole and Michelle.

who is your most hated of these choices
Paulie, FOR SURE. 20 - She was evicted for being a feminist. Paulie and Natalie had their blow-up the night before she left, and Bridgette defended her while using the dreaded f-word:
Paulie: Look, when the words 'uncomfortable' and 'disrespect' get thrown around really loosely in this house, and that's just my thing...
Bridgette: When I see a woman get shit on, I'm gonna come to her defense every time, because I'm a feminist at heart. You have a perspective, and that's valid, but she has a perspective too. She needed an extra voice because she couldn't get a word in edgewise up there. That's my thing.
Paulie just about lost his mind over this, repeating it to all the guys that night ("she's a feminist!" "she admitted it?") and even comparing feminism to racism. The next day, immediately after the DE, he brought up the feminist thing again and said that Bridgette would need to ask forgiveness from god for slandering him. Bridgette would later say in the jury house, "Being a feminist means that I stand up for women. I'm not against all men, I'm just against him." So if you were wondering why Bridgette was targeted over everyone else in the DE, and why feminism was brought up during her jury segment, there you go.
