There's still widespread discrimination against women and trans people. Homosexuals are more or less universally accepted outside places like Alabama.
Even in New York, an assertive woman is seen as "bitchy" while an assertive man is "tough / no-nonsense".
And that's just social discrimination. There's still institutionalized discrimination such as the wage gap and glass ceiling.
