When you say work nights, do you mean overnights or just closing somewhat late?
9pm-7am
Why was it a 10 hour shift?
1st and 2nd were both 7 hours

3rd was 10

Mandy literally beats death down at times.
Exactly! She literally made Death her bitch

so awesome, yet no explanation is given for how she's literally able to reality warp and kill demons

my personal theory is that she's some kind of omnipotent god

Spoiler
also, side note: grim adventures was always my shit when I was a kid, but I just started rewatching it as an adult and it's actually so good

so much fourth wall breaking, I love it

The Flood / Which type of character is better?
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:40:56 AM »

Is it the Azula type of badass, one whose status as a fearsome, dominant force in the show comes from the skills and traits they have? With this kind of character, you know they're scary because you've seen what they can do and they have a concrete, in-lore reason for being so badass. Other characters like this are Walter White, Samurai Jack, Magnum PI, most drama characters, superheroes, etc.

Or is it the Mandy type of badass, one whose status as a fearsome, dominant force in the show is completely unexplained and exists because of the status quo? This is commonly referred to as toonforce, and is usually present in less serious works, but it's still a type of awesome that kind of transcends the Azula-like kind. With this, the lack of explanation lends itself to much greater hilarity and impact than if we would have expected it. It's almost a meta, fourth wall thing in that the universe itself bends to the will of these characters, and even in situations where we clearly would expect them to fail, the world itself subverts our expectation. Other characters like this are Bugs Bunny and Megan Parker.

I think the first of these feels a bit more earned, but the second is more interesting to me and I like it better. What do you think?

i'm talking about jack's physical conflicts this season, not emotional conflicts

silly person

and even then, i'm not questioning whether it's believable--i'm questioning why it's even taking place to begin with

why did this series need jack to kill human beings for the sake of drama--is that really what the show needed
it's called tension

the daughters of aku are stronger than any threat he's faced

and yeah, he needs to kill a human because that's a plot point that's dying to be addressed. (him killing sentient robots/humans in the original series and feeling seemingly nothing over it)

"does he need to be going through these conflicts"

yes, he fucking does

the whole show has been building up to them

Jack has always been presented as a normal person. He gets scared, he gets lonely, there's an entire episode in season 3 about him giving up the fight. To say these thoughts are unprecedented or unbelievable after 50 years of constant combat honestly means you don't know shit about the show.

And you obviously missed it if you're bitching about a necessary result of it
thank you for avoiding the most crucial part of that post
Complain about THAT in your initial post - "I don't like where they took the plot this season". Don't turn me off from any legitimate criticisms you might have by whining about something so banal and necessary.

Jack has never been faced with a human dying at his hands before

god I hate nitpicks

Jack has never been faced with a human dying at his hands before, so there's never been graphic blood before. That's the opposite of inconsistent. It would be inconsistent if robots started spewing blood or Aku started sending human assassins after Jack.

The Flood / Re: Samurai Jack season 5

As I feared, the blood is slightly off-putting just because it's literally never been present before. It just comes off a little fan-fictiony, like when people write swears in the dialogue of characters who never actually swear in the source material? It's a little distracting, but whatever.

there was blood in the original all the time, it happened whenever human characters were injured

of course, the blood here is much more graphic, and it's used purposely (not senselessly) to highlight the moral conflict of killing another human - you know, the plot.

Every change they've made to the series has been in service to the characters and plot, and that's far from fanfictiony

When the episode opened with the fire lair backdrop and Aku's evil humming theme I was SO excited

I love this idea that Aku is deliberately avoiding Jack and is going just as crazy as him because he STILL can't squash his pest. His passive aggressive exit from his scientists and the "therapist" he had to talk to because of all this were both hilarious

Baldwin's voice was disappointing, but you just can't top Mako's hammy, perfect performance. Side note: "I think I'm in the computer........yes! That's me!" is still one of the funniest deliveries I've ever heard from anyone. Anyway, I'm just going forward with my personal theory that Aku is tired and depressed after 50 years and doesn't have the same gusto he used to have (actually mentioned in the episode with the Old Aku/New Aku line).

Other main thought: Jack's whole scene hiding under the metal dome was amazing. I never noticed how different S5 Jack sounds from the original one, but the ghost of who he used to be was voiced like 2004 Jack - Phil LaMarr killed it with that subtle touch. But even the whole message of that scene - his psyche is begging him to kill himself, he's been trapped in this nightmare for half a century, he has nothing to fight or live for. But there's this weird mix of honor and pride that doesn't let him do that.

I'm glad that the "darkness" of this season is out of necessity to the plot and characters, not for its own sake. They kept Aku funny and charming, which is a blessing just by itself.

Also I'm betting he doesn't even know the daughters of Aku exist. If he meets them I hope he's visibly creeped out by them
There's this great theory that I'm believing until proven otherwise that Aku knows about them, but purposely avoids them because they're too creepy

it's so funny and in character
