ok I've watched a few more and it's not that bad
they get captured like every other episode but they also outwit their opponents sometimes without the need for gadgets

also I hate the "high school student by day, ______ by night" trope but this show actually makes it work well

shocked at how misogynistic it can be. I was gonna also post how awesome this show was but you just had to bring your inner Anita out...
it's a great show and I'm going to start watching it a lot (watched when I was a kid), and I can accept that it's a product of its time and still enjoy it entertainment wise they literally get captured every episode, and usually rely on their gadget of the week to prevail and not their own personalities and cleverness

I admit it
at times I really love this show, at other times I'm kinda shocked at how misogynistic it can be
oh well, 2001 was a different time and I feel they were trying to channel Clueless

it can mean either maybe you could argue that the word has changed, but historically that term is associated strongly with author avatars but no mandy isn't a mary sue in any way, but she IS kinda boring
lol what mandy is hilarious and awesome, she makes the show

« on: March 22, 2017, 12:37:06 AM »
it means the character is a wish fulfillment device for the author
needed to clear this up b/c apparently some people on the web are calling mandy a mary sue now

When you say work nights, do you mean overnights or just closing somewhat late?
9pm-7am
Why was it a 10 hour shift?
1st and 2nd were both 7 hours 3rd was 10

Ah overnight. Yeah those are fucking stupid, not worth the extra $1.50 pay.
9pm-7am lmao I didn't even get that

Mandy literally beats death down at times.
Exactly! She literally made Death her bitch so awesome, yet no explanation is given for how she's literally able to reality warp and kill demons my personal theory is that she's some kind of omnipotent god Spoiler also, side note: grim adventures was always my shit when I was a kid, but I just started rewatching it as an adult and it's actually so good
so much fourth wall breaking, I love it

Is it the Azula type of badass, one whose status as a fearsome, dominant force in the show comes from the skills and traits they have? With this kind of character, you know they're scary because you've seen what they can do and they have a concrete, in-lore reason for being so badass. Other characters like this are Walter White, Samurai Jack, Magnum PI, most drama characters, superheroes, etc. Or is it the Mandy type of badass, one whose status as a fearsome, dominant force in the show is completely unexplained and exists because of the status quo? This is commonly referred to as toonforce, and is usually present in less serious works, but it's still a type of awesome that kind of transcends the Azula-like kind. With this, the lack of explanation lends itself to much greater hilarity and impact than if we would have expected it. It's almost a meta, fourth wall thing in that the universe itself bends to the will of these characters, and even in situations where we clearly would expect them to fail, the world itself subverts our expectation. Other characters like this are Bugs Bunny and Megan Parker. I think the first of these feels a bit more earned, but the second is more interesting to me and I like it better. What do you think?

i'm talking about jack's physical conflicts this season, not emotional conflicts
silly person
and even then, i'm not questioning whether it's believable--i'm questioning why it's even taking place to begin with
why did this series need jack to kill human beings for the sake of drama--is that really what the show needed
it's called tension the daughters of aku are stronger than any threat he's faced and yeah, he needs to kill a human because that's a plot point that's dying to be addressed. (him killing sentient robots/humans in the original series and feeling seemingly nothing over it)
5307
« on: March 19, 2017, 11:36:34 PM »
"does he need to be going through these conflicts"
yes, he fucking does
the whole show has been building up to them
5308
« on: March 19, 2017, 11:30:43 PM »
Jack has always been presented as a normal person. He gets scared, he gets lonely, there's an entire episode in season 3 about him giving up the fight. To say these thoughts are unprecedented or unbelievable after 50 years of constant combat honestly means you don't know shit about the show.

And you obviously missed it if you're bitching about a necessary result of it
thank you for avoiding the most crucial part of that post
Complain about THAT in your initial post - "I don't like where they took the plot this season". Don't turn me off from any legitimate criticisms you might have by whining about something so banal and necessary.

Jack has never been faced with a human dying at his hands before congratulations, you have identified the point
And you obviously missed it if you're bitching about a necessary result of it
