Serious / Re: Atheists...
« on: September 15, 2014, 10:25:38 PM »
I really wish there was an place of eternal harmony that you go to after you die, where all your deceased loved ones and friends are waiting for you. I cannot overstate how much I wish there was a place like that. But the sad fact of the matter is that it doesn't exist. After death, there is literally nothing. No black void, no fire, just simply nothing. It's an incredibly scary thought, and I can see why people would rather believe in religion than the idea of nothingness. I would love to delude myself in that belief, and I did for a while. But everyone has to face the truth sometime. The kind of funny thing is that Christians will never be proven wrong. When they die, they won't have the cognition to realize that their beliefs were incorrect.
I would say "How do you know that?" but I just don't feel like it. :/

Not really atheist nor a theist but as the old saying goes "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
I know it from basic logic. Everything that you are; your personality, your memory, your identity, who you are is all a construct of your brain. And when you die, your brain rots into nonexistence, along with who you are. I find it funny that such a simple concept is up to so much debate.

I straight up have no idea what that stands for, and I know quite a few acronyms...

EDIT: Oh. lolz. Yeah... I was actually half-thinking about changing the banned text (the red, italicized style) to display that message instead of the standard "This user has been blacklisted..."

Serious / Re: A death penalty discussion
« on: September 14, 2014, 08:29:13 PM »
The death penalty is never justified. I don't care if we captured Hitler, there's never an excuse for government-mandated murder.
Rehab is a giant waste of money. The public shouldn't have to pay for a prisoner to live. Especially the state they get to live in. Nowadays prisoners live in pretty damn good conditions.
I'd rather waste all of our money than have our government be one step closer to complete immorality. I do agree that prisons are way too cushy, though. Give prisoners a dirt floor, bread three times a day, and water. And make them work for that.

Say Hitler was captured.
Should taxpayers should have to pay for Hitler to be locked up for the rest of his lifetime?
Yes. Though prisoners in general shouldn't just sit around all day, they should be forced to work for their free room and board.

Incest? Check
Essentially paying for sex? Check

Yep, pretty damn immoral.
Neither incest nor prostitution is immoral.

Not at all. Morality is just the emotional rules governing the relationship between sapient creatures. The thing you described isn't sapient at all.

Right, and that's exactly why you respond the way you do.
Like the way you misgendered Noelle in plug.dj and other places. Totally not trying to stir up anger, right?

Don't make me start quoting things from this thread.
I call Noel "he" because I don't recognize transgenderism as a legitimate change of gender. Not trying to stir up anything, just standing by my beliefs.
Misgendering and knowingly using the wrong name is purposely stirring up trouble.
Hey, basic human respect anybody?
If I said that I believed I was a bear at heart, and demanded you call me "it", and that my new name was "Rrrragh", would you do that? Same exact thing.
I don't see why not. It's the internet, after all. Who the fuck cares?
Generally "it" is a bit offensive though, so I might use "they" instead.
No matter how hard I try, I can not bring myself to refer to an individual with a plural pronoun.
I've since found it much simpler to just not use pronouns for trans people at all, even if it looks a tad unnatural. Nobody gets offended and my inner grammar nazi is satisfied.
Actually the original definition of they/them/their was both singular and plural. It wasn't until recently that it was changed. Plus, say there's a mystery person whose gender you're unaware of. How would most people talk about them?

"the mysterious stranger said they were coming for a visit"
I would just use "he" in a situation like that.

Calm down, man. Not every controversial OP is an attempt to stir up anger. There's a Serious board for a reason, so people can actually talk about sensitive topics like this.

Serious / Re: Is transgenderism a mental disorder?

I may be wrong, but I thought "transgender" referred to people who changed their sex.
See, to me, that doesn't make any sense.

A change of sex should be called transexual. Which it is.
Again, semantics. We both know what we're talking about, so why do you keep whining about the exact word used?

Serious / Re: Is transgenderism a mental disorder?

One more question.

Does transgenderism cause dysphoria, or does dysphoria cause transgenderism?
I may be wrong, but I thought "transgender" referred to people who changed their sex. So the dysphoria (thinking that you're a different sex to begin with) would lead to the transgenderism.
Transgenderism is merely the identification with a gender not consistent with one's assigned sex.
So transgenderism is gender dysphoria, with that definition.

Serious / Re: How much value do you put on human life?

Life = existence. Being careless with the sanctity of life means being careless with a person's very being. Therefore, I put a lot of value in it.
