It's a text-based game where you run a country, obviously. The first thing you do is choose your political system, state religion (if any), economy type, etc. Once the actual game starts, you're simply supposed to build your empire. The most obvious way is land. Annexing neutral territories is how your state grows, and annexation speed is dependent on how many soldiers you send to annex it, and how big the territory is. The most important way to grow, however, is researching technology. That's how you go from swords to bows to rifles, but it's not all just military technology. You can research anything you'd like, as long as it's realistic and logical, and as long as you do it in steps (researching muskets before rifles, for instance). I'm not really good at explaining, so just browse this thread if you want a solid idea of how this works.
