Honestly? I'm starting to see the value of anti-natalism now. I can't speak for everyone, but it seems cruel to be put into this world, get a taste of existence, just to have it stripped away 75 years later. There's a great sequence in True Detective where MM pretty much talks about how sentience, self-awareness, is a tragic flaw in evolution. Animals don't sit around all day and worry about death or think about nonexistence. They just live.

While I don't nominally disagree with the whole "consent is everything" mantra, I do believe that it's possible to violate consent if only the cost-benefit analysis of the imposition tends towards a net gain. Any person--no matter who they are--should be willing to sacrifice themselves for a million others. Your "sovereign individual rights" come second when others are involved.
I agree with this. People should be willing to sacrifice themselves to stop the Holocaust. That's obvious. But if they're not willing to, then they're not willing to. You can't just treat it like they agreed to it and kill them anyway. It's selfish for them to decline, sure, but it's still their choice. Your life is no one but yours, and you're under no obligation to end it, no matter how much good may come from doing so.

I'd be lying if I said no, but it would still be a terrible, evil thing to do. I wouldn't try to argue that it was justified, and I'd probably be doing it for selfish reasons like sparing myself and the people I know that pain. Regarding the original scenario, I would probably give my life to save five people. But I can't ethically make that choice for someone else.

The reason nonexistence is so frightening is because it's the most alien concept I can possibly think of. There's simply no way I can cope with it or fathom it. And while a very, very slim amount of people will be tortured in their lives (I probably never will), everyone, including me, will eventually die. I guess that's why it's on my mind more.
