Because if you go around making it a primary part of your persona like BC does with his car avatars and fairly routine threads, or just constantly mention it, then people will pay attention to it and wonder why won't you confirm this thing that you're always going on about being a significant aspect of your character?
And they shouldn't pay attention to it. That's on them. And gender IS a primary part of, not just a persona, but of life. If someone desperately wants to be the other gender, why would they tell the truth? Why would they say "I'm a guy but want to be a girl" and not just "I'm a girl"? It makes no sense, and the lie doesn't affect you at all. So just move on.

most people who lie about their gender on the internet are doing it for malicious purposes
trolling, leading desperate men on (or women, but it's mostly men), etc.
That's an arbitrary distinction. Even if you're out, you're still the sex you were born as. The reason that most people lie about their gender on the Internet is, outed or not, they want to artificially change that. They want to be treated and thought of as the opposite sex completely, not as a tranny. Very, very few people who lie about their sex are doing it to "lead on people" or for malicious purposes. I don't know what even gives you the impression that it's some rampant problem.

When a user claims to be something that is statistically highly unlikely, it is only natural to ask for some form of confirmation that what they're claiming is true. Think about BC for a minute, he has claimed that he is exceedingly wealthy, and many users have routinely demanded evidence when it is relevant to conversation. This is no different than a user on here claiming to be a female.
Asking for "proof" that BC is wealthy is just as fucked up. People don't ask poor people to post proof that they're poor. It's a straight-up double standard, and the fact that you care at all about whether or not people are lying on the Internet (fun fact: anything anyone says here could be a lie) is indicative of the problem.
