The Flood / Why is Bethesda.net so dead?
« on: April 19, 2016, 07:32:34 AM »
For real, they're a thriving company managing two huge franchises. And Sep7 is more active right now then they are. I expected that place to have near Bnet levels of activity.

Seems like people don't like forums anymore :(

God, you're annoying.

Without the initial state of the compound, the catalyst does nothing.

Deci?

Oh I'm a joke and I may hate myself already, but I don't think I'd ever be as bad as Kinder.
Why do you insult yourself like this? It's just a forum bro, calm the fuck down. Literally nobody here actually dislikes you.
If he hates himself, I doubt it's over anything as trivial as opinions of him on an Internet forum.

He's obviously unsatisfied with his life.
I think you underestimate how seriously he takes this place.
He takes it pretty seriously, but it's only the catalyst to his problems, not the cause.
that's pretty much what a catalyst is
A catalyst is an exacerbator. It causes a unstable compound to produce a reaction. Without the initial state of the compound, the catalyst does nothing.

Nothing like that relieving feeling when you decide to pull an all nighter
What the hell is relieving about pulling an all nighter?
When you look at the clock, it's 4AM, and you're not tired. So you figure, I'll just stay up another hour, then I'll be good to sleep. Then 5 rolls around, then 5:30, and you're worried you'll sleep in too late or not get enough sleep, and you have all this pressure to stop whatever enjoyment you're having and sleep....and then you just say fuck it, I'll stay up until 8pm the next day and go to bed early then.

It's very relieving to have the pressure off you that compels you to sleep.

Why don't we decide right now, in this thread?

This forum needs a lightning rod to conduct all the hate, otherwise we implode.

Why do you always post these when I'm one episode behind...

Haven't seen the finale yet, but the penultimate episode was so good. It's setting it up to look like Mike is going to kill Hector, but we obviously know that won't happen.

Fallout 4 has

+Great combat mechanics (cover system, hitmarkers, sprinting, fluid weapons)
+The most interesting companions out of any modern Fallout (New Vegas had Veronica and Boone but not much else)
+The best map and locations out of any Bethesda game. Exploring downtown Boston is so mezmerizing and immersive. Nearly every building is explorable, and the y-axis is actually relevant. You can climb up buildings, fight on rooftops, leap from skyscraper to skyscraper, etc.
+In general, the main plot for each faction is well thought out and gripping, especially the Brotherhood's.

-Really bad sidequest choices (in the few that actually offer them) and poor sidequests in general. This is a game that encourages making your own stories through exploration and discovery than completing the weak pre-made ones.
-Terrible interactive dialogue. Literally no meaningful differences in the results of what you say.
-I hate to say it, but boring crafting. It was supposed to be designed around tailoring weapons to each player's individual style, but ended up just being about hoarding junk until you got the shit you needed to make each weapon the best it can get. The only real choices you have with weapons is whether to make it automatic or not, and what scope to add to it.
-Chore-worthy settlement creation. Even worse, if you're a normal person who dislikes making settlements, then you're locked out of an entire faction.

Fallout 4 is probably the most polished and fun to play Fallout game, but it severely lacks the RPG elements and dialogue diversity that makes Fallout Fallout. I've played much better RPGs, but Fallout 4 is the best FPSRPG out there.

The Flood / Re: If you thought this* was the moral option
« on: April 18, 2016, 10:03:10 PM »
and class, you're right up there
Why do you put human life above morality?
i don't

i think the bottom line is that we disagree on morality's "focus"

in my opinion, morality is focused more on the collective than the individual--because what's worse than 1 person dying of cancer? 1000 dying of cancer. it's the same scenario, amplified by an order of magnitude.

if the only way to find the cure for cancer was to kill a cancer patient, you
- could kill the cancer patient, and extract the cure, saving TENS of millions of people, and cancer is gone forever
- could "respect" the cancer patient's individuality, as he dies two months later, and the cure dies with him

if you chose the second option, you would be the worst person ever

now, realistically, the cancer patient in question would likely opt to kill him or herself, because the decision would be entirely "up to him," but we all know that he's going to make the right choice

but if, for some reason, it HAD to be you, you'd be would be the worst--we would've found the most evil person ever

worse than the worst dictator, worse than the worst mass murderer, worse than the worst martin shkreli--because you'd allow tens of milions of people to suffer and die worldwide, just to save one person who only had two months to live anyway

i can't think of anything more disgusting than that
Where do we draw the line? This is ultilitarianism 101, and it's cruel. When we sacrifice the needs of the few for the needs of the many, the few get trampled on. And if you're unlucky enough to be the few, then I guess just fuck you. If you were told we could have eternal world peace and happiness if 100 people were forced to stay alive and be in constant excruciating pain eternally, then I don't give a shit what you say. Choosing to let those people stay in that state because "lol a billion is a bigger number than a hundred" is evil. When we forget about basic human rights and fairness, then lives don't matter. Lives will come and go, principles and rights are forever.

Also rights don't exist as anything more than a social construct.
And the piece of toast in front of me doesn't exist as anything more than a conglomeration of molecules.
What the fuck does that even mean
It means the fact that they're a social construct doesn't mean they're any less real. Morality is a social construct, justice is a social construct, ideas in general are a social construct. Yet they're just as real as any physical object sitting in front of me, and still live on when that piece of toast is nothing but dust.

Inaction is the action there. I'm talking about a hypothetical where someone is expected to give up their life for the lives of others. It makes you heroic if you choose to make that sacrifice, but it doesn't make you a bad person in the slightest if you choose not to.

I've heard the name of the game a lot, and when browsing free stuff on PS Store, I saw that game come up.

What's the deal? Is it one of those things where the game is free but you have to pay a subscription?
It's free, but microtransactions and subscription are optional. As someone with almost 2000 hours on Planetside 2, I can safely say it has one of the better F2P models. You can either unlock weapons with either in-game or IRL cash, but most of the weapons are sidegrades rather than upgrades. The default weapons are generally excellent and in some cases even the best in their class. It's probably one of the least grindy F2P games.

Subscription basically just gives you more XP and faster resource generation, which isn't really that big of a deal unless you plan on spamming vehicles and MAX suits all day.

If you're going to get into PS2, be prepared to get relentlessly turbodunked. The game has a fairly high learning curve and the majority of the playerbase is composed of grizzled vets who have been playing for years. It's completely open world and there is no matchmaking system, so aside from the newbie continent, there's no real segregation from the MLG players and rabble. The best thing you can do is join an outfit the first chance you get. They'll teach you how to play properly and give you direction.
Wait, it's like an MMO? But it's a first person shooter.

Also, the only human that matters is the self. Fuck Ellie's life if it makes sure my own continues.
Every human life matters, but some things matter more. Like human rights.

If someone was told (somehow objectively truthfully) "you have to kill yourself or one million people are going to die", he has no obligation whatsoever to kill himself.
and I wouldn't kill myself in that scenario as well. However, in Joel's case, a cure would benefit him as well since he is just as likely to get the virus as anyone else. He just let Ellie take precedence to his better judgement.
You're missing what I'm saying. I would kill myself in that situation, to save all those people. But even if I was one of the people, I wouldn't try to force the guy to kill himself, that's wrong.

The self matters just as much as others matter, but both are temporary, both will die eventually regardless. Preserving morality and individual rights for the people still here is much more important than minimizing deaths that, in the long run, are inevitable anyway.
