"Genre films nowadays are all about spectacle," says Matt. "What we loved about the movies we watched as children was the great character work. They are all about the place where the ordinary meets the extraordinary."
See you already know the creator has his mind in the right place

Apparently some of the same people who did Wayward Pines are doing this show, hopefully they've learned from the mistakes of that one.

aw fucking shit, son

this show looks hype as hell, I'm so goddamn excited

not to mention that Netflix always releases shit season by season, so I'll be able to just watch the whole show in a night. Has anyone else been curious about this show? Winona Ryder, supernatural horror and suspense, 80s throwback town...this has so much potential.

I think it just so happens that many people consider drug addiction to be the epitome of regressive behavior, and they're not wrong.
Lol, yes they are. A mass murderer or torturer is far more destabilizing to society than a drug addict, and definitely generates less productivity. Yet you don't see people calling school shooters "degenerates" - they call addicts degenerates, because addicts are just a group of people they personally dislike.
I wouldn't call a murderer a degenerate. It has the venom, but it has no punch. I'd call a murderer a piece of shit, a scumfuck, a worthless bastard, a cunt, etc. because those words are more incendiary and visceral.

Degeneracy implies a degree of perniciousness. Murderers are destructive to society in a more direct, literal fashion--whereas drug addicts are more passive, like a slow-acting poison that can be acted upon.

It's the difference between wanting to spit blood or venom.
I was more talking about the epitome of regressive behavior thing. And honestly, if you despised drug addicts to the extent you saw them as that epitome, you could just call them scumfucks, pieces of shit, and all that. Degenerate just sounds so antiquated and memey, like you're not being serious when you're saying it.

degenerate is just a generic insult word with no meaning
Also, this is not exactly true. It can be used in a generic sense, but if you look at the word's roots, you'll notice that it contains the word "generate," which typically denotes creation, productivity, and progression.

Degeneracy, then, would semble regression. A degenerate is someone who symbolizes the death, stagnation, or destruction of a good society or civilization--like a drug addict would. Or a vagrant. Or a sex-craved slut whore.

I could use the word debaucherous, but that's harder to type, and it sounds like something an old curmudgeon would say. "Degenerate" has this tone of spite and malice that I just love. It's one of my favorite insults ever.
Yeah but most people use it like the meaning of the word is to belittle drug addicts. You could call anyone who you personally think is encouraging regression a "degenerate" and still be using the word properly.

Just as peaceful as Christianity. There's extremists in every group, and those who yell the loudest are those who get paid attention to.

Spoken like a true degenerate.
I'm not the one who literally has a nazi avatar

A biscuit is this

10491
and why do people use it like it means someone who does drugs

degenerate is just a generic insult word with no meaning

Except we don't have the luxury of always doing the (hypothetical) first-best option.
Exactly. And in some situations, doing the first-best option is the moral option. But the world can be shitty, and humans can be shitty, so the moral option isn't always the one that makes the most pragmatic sense.
All this is is a disagreement in terms.

We're thinking about the same concepts and the same ideas, but you have a more precise definition of morality. I don't think your definition is particularly useful, or enlightening, but I can see why you use it separately to 'pragmatic morality' or whatever term you want to use.
It all comes down to that, out of necessity, we sometimes have to do bad things. The fact that those bad things may be necessary or have a better outcome in utility than the alternative doesn't absolve them of being immoral. What we should do usually lines up with what's the right thing to do, but that's not always the case.

Unknowingly convicting an innocent man to prison is evil. Knowingly doing it, no matter the justifications, is abhorrent. But freeing everyone from prison would create a mass of social problems, and so we have to do the morally wrong thing of sending him to jail.

Morality is all about principles. Rationality is about what we should do.
