If you're anything like me, you just end up getting 60+ that fix minor glitches and generally improve qualoty of the game. The one I was most excited for was the ability to wear a gas mask with a helmet.

Tbh the Outcasts should have replaced the Enclave in Fallout 3
Even keep the same storyline, Outcasts could have been way better. Have a more personal stake for the Brotherhood as soldiers are fighting against their former friends and the bad guys wouldn't have been really shoehorned in like the Enclave were. You could still have Outcasts as having better tech because tjey would have been proactively raiding outposts and military bases for shit while Lyons was bogged down in DC in a largely stale war of attrition.
Plus the outcasts power armour was waay cooler than Brotherhood's.

Though making Autumn an outcast paladin/ head paladin/ whatever (Protector I think actually) and a former rival to Lyons while largely keeping his personality largely the same would be cool. You could still keep the dynamic where the Outcasts leader (Casdin I think) want to purge the wasteland, but Autumn's splinter group more want to use the purifier to solidify power but not kill everyone, like JHE and Autumn.
Having BOS/ Outcast clashes at places like Fort Bannister and maybe Megaton or Ft. Independence would be sweet, kind of like the Civil War stuff in Skyrim (I like those quests. Civil War should have been Skyrims focus rather than dragons imo)

Yeah. Conflicts where the characters have a personal investment (NPCs, like) are a lot more interesting than 'these guys are bad' and that's it.
The Outcasts were such a missed opportunity.

That wouldn't make any sense. The only reason the BoS was "good" in Fallout 3 was because of Lyons. If he wasn't elder, they would be the same cookie cutter anti-villiains they were in the originals. And no Brotherhood member would actually go far enough to betray the organization and defect from it unless they believed that they were completely justified in doing so and had to do it. Defecting to help out the Capitol Wasteland and save people? What fucking knight or paladin would do that? Defecting to defend the Codex and the purpose of the Brotherhood? Almost any knight or paladin would at least consider it.
I definitely agree that you should've been able to choose your faction in F3, though. Would be interesting to be able to choose from Lyons' BoS, the Outcasts/original BoS, the Enclave, or independent.
I don't mean defected in the same style as the Outcasts but more like having the two factions exist within the same Brotherhood, with Lyons' faction having a bit less support, and have the player witness the infighting firsthand and perhaps have a hand in the outcome.
That would make sense, but if Lyons were anything short of elder, he would just be kicked out of the Brotherhood for having ideals that go so heavily against the Codex. It would be interesting if the BoS was just a few years behind what we saw in F3, though, and what would become the Outcasts were just kind of beginning to form as a sect within the Brotherhood. Regardless, I'm really glad the whole Lyons thing happened, unlike Luciana. It actually makes sense from a narrative standpoint for a leader like Lyons to develop some guilt and empathy after travelling across the entire continental US, and for him to channel that into trying to make the wasteland a better place. It would be so much less immersive and interesting for them to be a carbon copy of WC BoS.

And then you bitch about the natural progression of defying the Codex, when Fallout 4 had the Maxson line overtake the Lyons line. I disagree and explained why. It's simply changing lore for the sake of changing lore. In a game that has huge lore and history, I am very critical of that. For any game. Yeah, your only reason was "it's an unneccesary change". I actually gave reasons why it made Fallout 2 and the character of Myron retroactively better. Going completely against what they are is good. Okay. Yep, after making a huge walk from Lost Hills to The Pitt to DC, seeing countless horrors along the way and dying wastelanders who he had to ignore out of some old book, it's completely unreasonable for Elder Lyons to try to be more compassionate and helpful to the residents of the East Coast when he eventually settled there. It's completely unreasonable for the diehard BoS members to hate him for that, and break off to remain true to the actual BoS. Totally doesn't have any story value or interesting concept behind it. It would be TOTALLY better for Lyons to be another faceless, generic BoS operative who's diehard to the Codex and doesn't change a thing about their organization, and for that facelessness to carry into the F4 BoS. The horrors of dynamic storytelling, where experiences change people, and they have to deal with the repercussions of that change.

How did Fallout 3 make it canon?
Not all change is inherently bad and needs to have a reason behind it. It just so happens that this reason is actually good. Jet being pre-war is one of the most innocuous and easily explained retcons, and one that makes the source game (Fallout 2) even better. Myron was an egotistical, conniving shit. It only heightens his character that his one claim to fame wasn't even his. Fallout 3 made it canon by letting you find jet in sealed, pre-war bunkers and vaults.

Wow, you just reassured me that you have no idea what you're talking about. In the game itself, it's made abundantly clear that the East Coast chapter of the BoS deviated from the Codex because of Elder Lyons. The Brotherhood Outcasts are the people who stayed loyal to the meaning of the organization. And there was no retcon, there's this thing called "Lyons died and a less idealistic leader took his place" Putting a unique spin on a splinter of a preexisting faction, for completely reasonable and narratively intact reasons, is not changing the entire concept of the whole group.
