The Flood / How's my essay?
« on: October 05, 2014, 08:10:13 PM »
EDIT: FUCK YEAH I GOT A 100!

So, I had to write a DBQ (document based question) essay for my AP Euro class, in which I had to analyze the cause of and responses to the German Peasants' Revolts of 1524-1526. Interested as to what you guys think.

Edit: Regarding this "plagiarism software" I'm pretty you guys are referring to turning in assignments online using a system other than Google Drive, and I also think it's important to note that this is for high school. I have never heard students nor teachers mention any plagiarism software similar to that which you guys speak of.

Quote
The German Peasants’ Revolts were a series of revolts occurring from 1524-1526 in which peasants ran amok throughout the German states, with some groups converging on the town of Memmingen, Swabia, to form a Peasant Parliament and voice their grievances in the Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants. The revolts were caused by religious teachings and abuse inflicted by lords, and were responded to with support, as well as condemnation.

The revolts’ were quite connected to new religious teachings, as prior to and during the revolts, the Protestant Reformation was taking hold, and with it the rise of Lutheranism in particular. Indeed, Leonhard von Eck, the Chancellor of Bavaria, in his report to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria (Document 1) would go so far as to state that the primary cause of the revolts was Lutheran teachings. However, the validity of Leonhard von Eck’s testimony is negatively affected by his status as Chancellor of Bavaria, a primarily Catholic region of Germany. Taking into account his connection of the rebellion to Lutheran teachings, and his status as Bavarian chancellor, it can be ascertained that the Chancellor is likely Catholic, and would be more likely to link two phenomena he deemed to be negative. However, while von Eck could be considered a source partial to one perspective, there exists more evidence of a connection between the revolts and Lutheran teachings. Theologian Martin Luther spoke of the priesthood of all believers, which would be interpreted by some as the equality of all believers in all aspects of life, as indicated by statements from the Articles of the Peasants of Memmingen (Document 3). The teachings of radical Lutheran theologian Thomas Münzer played a role in the revolts as well, as stated by Martin Luther in his piece Against the Murdering, Thieving Hordes of Peasants (Document 7), a conclusion supported by Münzer’s open letter to the people of Allstedt (Document 6), in which Münzer would advocate violent action taken by the peasantry, claiming it to be God’s Will.

Abuse and oppression inflicted by lords upon the peasantry was another significant cause of the revolts. Abuse of the serfs had long been a characteristic of the feudal system, and statements in the Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants (Document 2), which speak of lords forcing more services upon serfs without compensating them for additional labor serve as a testament to this. Indeed, Caspar Nützel, in his letter to Duke Albert of Prussia (Document 9), referred to the mistreatment of the peasantry as excessive in nature.

The revolts were met with support from the citizens of various towns, and indifference on behalf of the nobility and upper class early on in the revolts, although this would soon change. As suggested by Pastor Johann Herolt’s report on the events at Weinsburg, the townspeople were supportive of the rebelling peasants, as they would likely have been impoverished themselves, and would have been in agreement with the ideals of the revolting serfs. In regards to the nobility, as indicated by Count Wilhelm von Henneberg’s letter to Duke Albert of Prussia (Document 11), and Lorenz Fries’ report on a peasant assembly (Document 8 ) some members of the nobility and peasantry were initially indifferent to the uprisings, as at that point the peasantry had primarily targeted priests and monks, looting and destroying monasteries. However, this indifference would soon become fear, as once the rebelling serfs had concluded laying wastes to the monasteries, they set their eyes upon the wealth and possessions of the upper class and nobility, once again as detailed in documents eight and eleven. Indeed, as is stated in nobleman Christoffel von Lichtenstein’s plea for leniency (Document 10) many nobles were forced to swear an oath of allegiance to the cause of the revolt to avoid death and robbery. The validity of Lichtenstein’s statement, however, becomes subject to skepticism when one considers his predicament at the time. In document ten he is requesting legal leniency, to avoid punishment for swearing an oath of allegiance. Therefore, he may have exaggerated the quantity of nobles that were forced to join the revolt in order to justify his actions. However, Martin Luther also testifies to such occurrences in document seven, thus Lichtenstein’s statements appear true.

The revolts also received a great deal of condemnation. Martin Luther himself delivered a stern condemnation of the rebels’ action in his piece Against the Murdering, Thieving Hordes of Peasants (Document 7), in which he names Münzer as responsible for the chaos. In document seven, Luther is clearly attempting to distance himself from Münzer and the peasants, who were influenced by Lutheran teachings, so as to avoid the anger of those who might see him as the cause of the revolts. THe revolts were condemned by secular forces as well, as indicated by the Decree of the Imperial Diet of Speyer (Document 12). In document twelve, as well as the Memmingen town council’s reply to the Articles of the Peasants of Memmingen (Document 4) the authorities appear to have adopted a certain degree of leniency towards the peasants, enabling them to either purchase their freedom from their lords, or in the case of document twelve, giving lords the ability to restore the previous status of peasants who had rebelled. This was likely done in order to make those in power appear more benevolent in the eyes of the peasantry, and lessening the likelihood of future revolts.

Sandtrap, I am so sorry. l, and I'm sure everyone here, wishes there was something we could do. But the truth is there isn't much I, or others can do, except pray.

Now, I know that some of the more... "Vocal" members of the community may not take kindly to this, but I don't care. Every little bit counts.

Sandtrap, I just wanted to know that I'm praying for you, man. I hope you get better and make an amazing recovery.

The Flood / Otto von Bismarck: Master Troll
« on: September 05, 2014, 04:26:28 PM »
Quote
Bismarck received a telegram from Bad Ems (the Ems telegram) giving a detailed account of the interview between William I and the French ambassador, which he proceeded to edit and abridge for the press in such a way that the French appeared to seek a humiliation of the Prussian monarch, and the monarch’s rejection of Napoleon’s demands seemed insultingly brusque to the French. The French responded by declaring war on Prussia on July 19, 1870. When the French were decisively defeated at Sedan in September, it appeared as though Bismarck would be able to score a third rapid victory in seven years. But guerrilla warfare broke out, and Paris held out despite the capture of the emperor. Bismarck, however, stirred anti-French passions to such a fever pitch that in January 1871 the four southern states joined the North German Confederation to create the German Empire

Hue.

Bismarck is one of my favorite figures in history.

Here's his channel.

I like it so far. While it is quite derivative of the original series, I find that it has the charm that the original series lost after season 4. Personally, I really hope he continues to create new episodes, but they've been put on hold, as he doesn't have the original Joyride Halo 2 figures.

I just thought that you guys might want to know, and I wanted to help this guy out by at least giving him slightly more exposure.

The Flood / Legalize Deathsticks.
« on: August 24, 2014, 01:48:11 PM »

Deathsticks are completely harmless, and pose no health risks whatsoever. Those who say the opposite have obviously been brainwashed by conservative HoloNet programs. Besides, even if they were harmful, what a sentient being does to their own body is their business.

Furthermore, legalizing deathsticks would create a profitable new industry to boost the galactic economy. So be reasonable, and support the legalization of deathsticks.

Now, go home, and rethink your position on the matter.

The Flood / ITT: Complain about your life
« on: August 22, 2014, 12:47:06 AM »
Complain about the unfortunate circumstances in your life.

For example: Today I realized that my hopes and dreams are just delusions of grandeur, and I have very little going for me in life. I haven't gone to, or been invited to, hang out with anyone in three years, and I even have extreme difficulty socializing and reaching out to my own family.

Despite my skill in writing I hate doing it, and the only thing I really enjoy is history. German isn't going well, as I've been slacking off.

So yeah, complain.

Gaming / My brief review of "Dishonored"
« on: August 19, 2014, 11:19:36 PM »
"Dishonored" was recently made free for those subscribing to Microsoft's "Xbox Network Premium" service. As I had not previously played the game, I purchased it.

"Disgraced" is a first person shooter with JRPG elements. Set in a fantasized version of the middle ages, you play as the treasure hunter turned mercenary, Corpo Latino. Framed for killing the King, and engaging in (consensual) sexual relations with the Empress' daughter, Corpus must fight through hordes of Imperialist Nazis on a quest for revenge.

There are some obvious plot holes, from the very beginning. The one I will mention has to do with the "rat infection". The colony where the game is set suffers from a mysterious ailment, which the Emperor endlessly strives to cure. However, the "plague" is just a horde of mice that run around murdering people. If they want to cure it, why don't they just kill the rats?

The gameplay is mediocre, with many quick time events. Furthermore, the game is terribly inconsistent. It tells me to avoid killing people, but gives me a sword and bow and arrow? Great logic, guys.

Overall, the game is just a reskin of "Grave Robber", but with a far less interesting protagonist than Laurel Kraft.

1/10.

The Flood / What I Want to See in Star Wars Episode VII
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:20:49 PM »
I want to see a "Stormtroopers in training" scene. Specifically, I want to see a Stormtrooper drill Sergeant.
The Drill Sarge would be clad in a battered set of the old stormtrooper armor, and be played by none other than R. Lee Erney.

R. Lee Trooper would berate recruits, in the typical R. Lee Erney fashion, and would loudly question:
"WERE YOU AT ENDOR RECRUIT??? HOTH??? DID YOU SEE THE DEATH AND DEVASTATION FIRSTHAND??? I DIDN'T THINK SO!!!"

So there you have it, that's what I want in Episode VII.

Left is an actual prop, right is a render.

I myself am quite pleased with it. It pays homage to the original design, while still appearing much more sleek.
Now, there's no official confirmation that these are real, but given that the photo on the left is an actual, physical helmet, and there appear to be multiple helmets behind it, I'd say it looks legitimate.

The Flood / Is something wrong with me?
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:36:08 PM »
I hate sexuality, and the act of sexual intercourse. I find it to be disgusting, and   I see it as a way of using people. That isn't to say I don't find myself attracted to people, I just abhor the idea of sexual intercourse.

I've stated this to others on this forum, and they just came to the conclusion that I was roleplaying as Rorschach. While Rorschach is a character I admire and agree with on a variety of issues, I'm not roleplaying as him. I just empathize with him, as he reminds me of myself in certain ways.

Mind you, I'm not asking to be "fixed". I embrace this dislike of sexuality, and will continue to do so. It makes me feel good about myself, and I don't want to lose that feeling.
