I think you misinterpreted that. If someone has eaten meat their entire life, it is a staple of their diet. It's a hell of a lot harder to stop than to never have started. Okay, I thought you were talking from a nutritional standpoint. I think the more interesting questions have to do with how one would function in that kind of society, though, assuming you refused to be a cannibal. I'm willing to bet most of you would be disgusted and angry, at the very least. Some of you might vocalize your disgust and anger—perhaps even militantly—but if you do, you'll be held to ridicule by the vast majority of the population, the same way vegans and vegetarians are right now, should they choose to be vocal. I just thought it was an interesting thing to think about it.

By no means is it a dietary staple. Almost everyone who eats humans realizes this; it just tastes good and that's the only reason they don't stop. The edgy teenagers on those forums have only been actively opposed to human livestock for five years or less, and new members join every year.

They're not ravenous, zombie-like cannibals; you're not in any danger. Nobody outside of the factory farm is. They just consider "human" to be a part of a balanced and socially-acceptable diet now, like pork, chicken, or beef.
Humans considered to be the absolute dregs of society are captured and forced into farms as livestock. After being fattened to the point where they can't walk, they are stuffed in a tightly-packed room to wait for their impending (perfectly humane) slaughter by guillotine. Their hands and feet are cleanly severed off so they don't try to fight back, and cauterized with hot iron so they don't bleed out. Once the human livestock are slaughtered, a butcher takes care of the deboning process and severs the most valuable and nutritious parts of the body (thighs, buttocks) and prepares them for distribution. Obviously, children of livestock are mass-produced in vitro, but women are still frequently raped and impregnated in order to efficiently produce breastmilk.
All of the negative health effects of cannibalism have been accounted for; it's now perfectly healthy to consume humans, and it's widely encouraged by nutritionists and health experts.
Oh, and they taste delicious. Not only will everyone tell you that they do, they'll look at you funny if you deny it. If you try to tell them what they're doing is wrong, they'll give you an even funnier look. They might even get defensive and ask you to stop judging them. Some of them will start treating you like you're an asshole trying to spread an agenda.
Only a small bevy of angry teenagers you meet on the Internet happen to think these people are crazy and evil. They are largely mocked and derided by the whole of society, while some people say things like, "I respect their opinion, but I'm never going to stop eating humans, because they taste so good!"

But the solution to that is not to force or expect all writers, developers and content creators to only put women in empowered and leading roles, or the only thing you'll achieve is inequality on the other side of the scale. That is not what's being expected of writers and developers here, though. What we "expect" from them is the exact opposite, and that's sort of the whole issue. What Anita's doing here is creating a dialogue, and if the dialogue she creates has a positive changing effect on the market as a whole, I don't view that as an unviable solution. And it goes beyond female empowerment, too. Simply "empowering" women is old hat—there's plenty of games and other forms of media out there that do a great job of that, and while it's still not quite enough, it only happens to be one facet of the industry that needs improving. Samus Aran could be described as an "empowering" female, but she's still an extremely flawed character—and not in the smart, literary way. We don't need the entire industry to listen to feminists. There only needs to be enough to create a market shift, which may not even require a quarter of the industry. Games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, while by no means perfect, are a good step in the right direction, because not only are they great games made with feminist ideals—they appeal to a wide demographic and don't shove anyone's agenda down anyone else's throat. Not that there'd be anything wrong with doing that. But from a business standpoint, it works out (HZD managed to outsell Breath of the Wild in the UK). "Better put the man in charge over a woman because sexism and male power fantasies" is a pretty dumb approach to take, but so is "gotta change my story around or write different characters than in my original vision because I can't have a woman in a support role" is equally stupid. I mean, I don't really see how. Artists can have their dumbass, puerile, unoriginal vision. Critics can criticize it. If the artist wants to change his vision to appease more people, it would be (paradoxically) against the artist to disapprove of that. Feminists aren't putting guns to anybody's heads here; they have no real influence over how he decides to create his art, so if he decides to change his "original vision," then that's his own personal choice. So I don't really think any approach here is stupid. It's kinda balanced out, really, like supply and demand. Why not just let artists be artists and critics be critics? You seem to be content with the former, but struggling with the latter. I fully support empowerment of more diverse characters in games, but you're gonna run into big issues if you push it to the extreme. If having women as just a sidekick is bad when they take your orders (even when it's done in a very positive way like in Bioshock) because it reinforces the negative ways we think about men and women, then you can easily argue that we shouldn't have black people in ghetto settings because it supports the stereotype of blacks being hoodlums, and that the only way you should have blacks in games is when they're all upper class, well spoken and on their best behavior. I don't know of anybody who wants it to be pushed to that level of extreme. Not me. Not Anita. Not anyone I've spoken to or heard about. Who are you talking about here?
