Im curious Verb, do you apply the same logic to game engines? Many are based on older engines like Source is on Quake, which was made by id software.
Thats taking someones work and modifying it.
I think there's a distinction to be made between modding someone's "work" and modding someone's art. Game engines facilitate the creation of art, but they themselves are not what I'd call art. You can't exactly "taint" something that wasn't ever designed for any artistic purpose, at least not in the way that I'm talking about. So if an artist wants to mod an engine to help create his own art, then more power to him. I don't care what the painter does with his easel, and I don't care what the author does with his typewriter.

I'd argue that modding is a big part of the reason why the industry is as big as it is. Counterstrike, one of the most popular games on the planet, was basically born out of modding Half Life. Hell, I doubt Valve and Steam would be anywhere near as big as they are if it weren't for people modding the shit out of their games. Hell, do you think people would still be playing skyrim or fallout 4 if they didn't have mods to extend their longevity? I would argue that the industry does not need to be as big as it is. If modding never existed, and the industry would be a lot smaller because of it, I'd consider that a worthy sacrifice. I've also stated repeatedly that i'm okay with mods as long as you're making a completely new and original game out of them, like CounterStrike. Skyrim and Fallout 4 do not deserve longevity and should've died years ago. Bethesda's name is basically built on people modding their games. Same for games like Halo CE and Star Wars Battlefront II, which got entire new maps and campaign experiences (Like the SPv3 mod for Halo CE that adds weapons and enemies and stuff from later games into Halo 1) that kept people playing for over a decade after they first released. >people have been drenching their games in piss for a decade woah dude And yeah, that's why Bethesda is a joke. That's why Halo: CE is a joke. That's why Battlefront II is a joke. If the games aren't good enough to be played without mods, then they didn't actually last ten years at all. When you mod a game, it's not that game anymore. It's your tainted version of the game. The moment you taint your game with a mod, it instantly dies. So I don't want to hear about this "longevity" thing. I've heard that a lot of PC ports like Dark Souls are basically unplayable without people going and making patch jobs themselves. Those mods are probably the worst of all. It shouldn't be up to the community to fix something that the developers are clearly responsible for. It's THEIR fucking job to fix it, not ours. And what a horrible precedent to set for the industry—"Let's release a broken-ass game and just let people fix it for us!" Yeah, brilliant.

Fixing a glitch has nothing to do with art. sure it does why wouldn't it? it's part of the final product of the game, no different than a painter's mistake are you really gonna allow your whole argument to hinge upon this flimsy point Then shouldn't you logically support mods? logically, absolutely not after everything i've said so far, that would be extremely illogical just because DLC is a scam doesn't make mods okay—they're still fucking insultingly retarded Plenty of museums are free.
but not all of them in order for you to make this point, all museums must be free

lately (as in, for the past few months) i've been getting the impression that korra finds jive annoying, actually
because he is, his threads are annoying, im just saying that they can be easily avoided by class if he hates him so much. posting in one thread is ok, twice is fine, but everytime? gosh
as many issues as i have i'm glad i don't seem to be on carson's level

You know things have gotten bad when half the threads on the flood are Solonoid/SecondClass shitposts and Jive brag threads. This coupled with Verb/SecondClass/Challenger arguing in every possible topic imaginable has made the forum kind of stale.
You guys need some new content.
or maybe you need to BRING some new content 🤔

the meme that I'm secretly in love with the embodiment of everything wrong with society has been an established jab for literal years, it's not some gibe korra made up itt
i don't think i claimed otherwise, and i don't think it matters either

I still don't understand why you think a game is static. The fact that updates and DLC exist is proof they aren't. patches and DLC are different because they're official it's the original artist coming in and improving upon his own work, so of course i'm okay with that i'm less okay with DLC because i think it's a huge scam, but that's another subject whereas people can see a painting for free. i'm pretty sure you have to buy a ticket or pay an admission fee if you want to visit a museum

yeah, it's pretty stunning how people don't like bad things

>recommending You mean openly shaming and reducing their harmless work? As well as the developers that don't look at the situation through the same narrow and superfluous lens?
what's wrong with that

I don't see how it's any different than the idea of building something with Legos that's not intended by the manual. because that's half the point of lego the purpose of lego is to build what you want with them that's not the point of a video game, unless it's littlebigplanet or something Looking at it from an artist's perspective is only covering a fraction of what goes into the original product. There's a much more technical backend keeping that art afloat; an extremely complex backend that some curious kid shouldn't be forced to develop from scratch just so they can explore the tiniest sliver of a concept like game AI, level design, or animation. >forced it's this sort of language that irritates me to no end i'm not forcing anyone to play any kind of way, i'm simply disapproving of it and recommending something else

not really a good example considering we can't create infinite completely identical copies of the mona lisa at will
but if I bought it I'd wipe my ass with it anyway just to prove art is dead

people would pay $60 for a new game when modders could theoretically just make their own for free
hmm
don't think this sort of thing hasn't been done already, either—it's been done with super smash bros
people were unsatisfied with brawl, so they modded the game into what they thought it should be—it's not just brawl with mods; they changed almost everything except the core gamplay, and they called it Project M
why isn't doing this more widespread? if developer intent doesn't matter, and you just want to piss on their art, why not just go ALL the way and make the halo 4 you wanted to see instead of the one that 343 wanted you to see
Oh no! I slightly modified something that I own!
oh no, i spilled a little bit of ink on the mona lisa oh well it's just a little it doesn't matter

oh yeah, sure thing game on \m/
what do you think happens when you overclock
my idles and max load is still about 10 degrees colder than a ps4 while running stress tests
i'm sure that makes it all worth the risk
what risk
we already discussed it you snotty cunt
was genuinely curious because I've never heard anyone refer to overclocking having an inherent risk as long as you used proper coolant and kept your eye on your temps
congratulations, you have identified the risk all by yourself, you poppin' fresh looking motherfucker
that's not a risk
yes it is

That's kind of what pubg is, but mods aren't always better than what the developer made. At the end of the day it's people making games. If a bunch of dudes could make a better Halo 4 than 343i I'd pay them no problem. If somebody takes a mod and makes it a full game, they created a game. Why shouldn't they be paid?
because they are not the original creators or copyright holders unless they made something brand new, which is fine

because it'd be pretty broken if he could turn into superman or something and steamroll the bad guy of the week
anyone remember how beast boy is a prince because he was adopted by an african king? yeah, neither does anyone else
Well duh but eventually everyone has a storyline where they unlock their fullest powers and ascend to godhood.
Even Batman and he didn't have any powers in the first place.
well that's just fucking dumb

questions where the answer is always "don't think about it"

TTG sounds better than TT tbh
never seen either but the first seems to at least have a sense of humor and not take itself too seriously (which you shouldn't do if one of your characters is legit named beast boy)
i hope you DO enjoy TTG more than TT
that'll just solidify your status as the "worst possible taste" guy
wtf i like verb now

I just think you're missing out.
think about it this way
why even get hype for new games anymore
you can just mod games to play however you want, right
Mods modify the existing content of a game. Hence the word mod. It's not new tech (mostly), or a new engine, or anything that has the amount of money a new game would have pumped into it.
Otherwise it wouldn't be called a mod. That's why.
but do most people only play new games for the new technology?
well i don't, it makes no difference to me
New tech allows for better gameplay
not necessarily
