The Flood / Re: Should we arm teachers and professors?
« on: August 06, 2017, 07:21:40 PM »
remember when you were in school and you had a substitute teacher and the first thing you thought was

"i'm going to make them cry"

yeah let's not give that person a gun
I said teacher not substitute
If you're gonna arm teachers, then logically, you would have to arm subs too. If a teacher is planned to be away for some time, and an unarmed sub comes in, someone could theoretically take advantage of that.

That said, I think it's a pretty bad idea. I'd prefer if we had less guns, not more.

If you asked my parents, they believe everyone should be armed. They think you should be legally required to have a gun on you at all times.

how much time do you have
A technically indefinite amount, as you could just make an arbitrarily long post, and I could just read it at any point.

The hatred around this game has always seemed like completely irrational hysteria to me.

As for MGSV, I can actually understand from a story standpoint why the game gets shit on. MGS4? No.

I legit had no idea. That's fucking lame.

Also, why does Spiderman keep changing actors? I don't care much about comic books or superhero movies, so I haven't seen any of the movies that came after Maguire.
The series that came after Sam Raimi's trilogy feat. Tobey Maguire was a total reboot; it's called The Amazing Spider-Man rather than just Spider-Man. So, it's as simple as that—new series -> new actor.

This happened because the planned Spider-Man 4 got canceled due to Raimi leaving the project. He had to finish the film in about three years, and wasn't confident that he'd be able to do it without compromising his artistry. Tobey was always close friends with Raimi, and has stated that he wouldn't want to do another Spider-Man film without him, so he didn't. The industry, too, felt that the core Spider-Man story was always about a coming of age, and the series had been beginning to deviate from that anyway, so they figured it was time to reboot it.

So for the Amazing Spider-Man, they cast Andrew Garfield, with Marc Webb directing. The first movie went over reasonably well with audiences, despite being a near-total rehash of the first Sam Raimi film with re: the fact that it retold his origin story and used mechanical web shooters instead of organic webs to be closer to the comics.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wound up being one of the worst superhero movies of all time, though. Take all of Spider-Man 3's issues and turn them up to 11, basically. It was fucking bad, and, relatively speaking, it performed poorly at the box office as well. So that franchise was shitcanned.

Spider-Man is still an immensely popular character, and Sony is determined to make any effort to milk him, so they expressed interest in grouping him up with the MCU (the Avengers movies). He made his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which would've been a surprise appearance if it wasn't so heavily advertised. This new, completely-unrelated-to-Andrew-Garfield Spider-Man is very young and stated to be fifteen years of age.

So, this NEW movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is another reboot and I'm not joking. It is an expansion of the Spider-Man that we saw in CA: Civil War, and that's where we currently stand.

It's a mess and you're not wrong for having missed out.

TL;DR

They just keep rebooting the series, which entails a new story, which entails new actors.

Wait what, Spiderman doesn't always generate the web? What is this shit
Welcome to......2013?
Then what does he do instead? Does he have a machine that makes fake webs? Because that'd be the dumbest shit.

yyyyyep

it's as dumb as you think, too, because there are plenty of conflicts that involve him losing/breaking the damn things
Quote
Daily reminder that the Tobey Maguire movies are the only acceptable canon lore.
that is how i choose to view it as well

Organic webs are an affectation by Sam Raimi.
Organic webs were in the comics first, but it was Peter's clone, Kaine (Scarlet Spider), that had them.
i see

following comics seems like a massive headache
Some are easier than others, but Spiderman is awful to follow. The Clone Saga was easily the lowest point of the comic's history, but (surprising to those new to comics) Spiderman has a LOT of overly convoluted and mediocre stories. The Night Gwen Stacy Died, The Amazing Spiderman run by Straczynski, Superior Spiderman, and Renew Your Vows are basically the best of his history (with a few other good ones mixed in). The only reason he hasn't ended up like the Fantastic Four is because of the legacy cemented by Secret Wars, the 90's cartoon, and the Raimi movies.
please just tell me Spider-Man Reign isn't canon
It isn't 616/2.0 Spider-man, so no.
what's that mean
Like DC, Marvel comics have a multiverse. The primary Marvel universe was Earth-616; then because of the events in Time Runs Out and Secret Wars 2015, we got a singular comicbook universe that took the favorite parts of all the universes (616 Peter Parker, Miles Morales, etc) and combined them into one continuity.
And is that considered canon to the MCU? Or are they two separate entities?
MCU is a different continuity, yes. Most of the characters were based more heavily on their Ultimate incarnations as well, and not the mainline characters.
i like this

so it's not that things are "non-canon"

they're just "different-canon"

I'd have relatively big parties until I was about 12 or 13, and that slowly dissolved into having nice quiet dinners with my family, which I've grown to prefer.

What was canon first, web shooters or organic webs?

Like.....it never made sense why webs came out of his wrists. But GO GO WEB felt a lot more natural and more spider like then the shooters.
Web shooters are canon. Organic webs are an affectation by Sam Raimi.

Makes perfect sense to me—a radioactive spider bit him and gave him spider-based powers. Why shouldn't he have organic webs?
I agree, just seems weird that all he really got in this movie was strength.
And climbing too, to be fair.

re: web shooters

if i have to hear "but that's how they were in the comics!!!!!!!!" one more time, i'm gonna scream

I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FUCKING COMICS THEY SUCKED SAM RAIMI DID EVERYTHING BETTER

the thing about web shooters is that there always has to be a stupid, shitty, cliche scene where spider-man, like, FALLS or something, and he always manages to lose the web shooters

and then he's like "ohhhhhh nooooooo, my web shootersszzzzzz"

and then his stupid ass has to go and get them before he gets his ass kicked

it's just a cheap way to add more tension and ugh

it just makes him so much lamer of a superhero in my eyes

My biggest problems were the YA vibe, color grading, and the same over-coreographed fighting sequences that every Disney Marvel movie has.

I'd put the movie par with Spiderman 3, if not a touch ahead.
hmm, i'm gonna assume you didn't hate spiderman 3 then

(good)

YouTube

i'd say i agree 80% with this video

except i actually liked the scenes with tony stark, and i surprisingly enjoyed the mentor thing he had going—i didn't expect to like that aspect at all but i thought it was executed tastefully

i have mixed feelings about spidey's talking suit, it's cool and all, but it felt like a replacement for my all-time favorite of spider-man's superpowers—his fucking spider sense

i also didn't like peter's nerd friend, or virtually any of the high school drama scenes whatsoever, because wow i just don't caaaaaaaaare, especially when it's not even trying to be an accurate portrayal of how high school actually is

and HAHAHAHAHAHAHA remember when those girls are playing fuck/kill/marry, but one of the girls just says the letter "F" instead of "fuck" like an actual girl in high school would say? yeah that was hilariously stupid

that being said, i think zendaya's character was actually my favorite overall—bit of a dark horse—she reminded me a lot of ally sheedy's character in the breakfast club (almost to a point where i think she was trying to emulate that performance, but it was fine), and i was actually surprised at who she ended up being

also, i hate web shooters and they suck and they're stupid—organic webs forever

but i mean yeah, overall it was fine, and it wasn't a clusterfuckity mess like TASM2 or anything

that's true, and they have to be aware that no one really plays SF for the story anyway

2.5 years to go. A bit odd that there won't be an Ultra Super Street Fighter V UHD Remix II: Second Bout given the franchise history.
i wouldn't be surprised if they went back on their word on that, tbh

sales have been pretty dismal, and a re-release would certainly help ameliorate that

finally gonna see this shit

expecting PURE GARBAGE
If you are a Puritan I expect you to start hating it. But for me, it is a great movie that finally has its own soul like the Dark Knight.

It takes liberty in story and casting which I feel does the movie and the character great justice. After seeing enough comic based or book based movies failing due to hem trying to copy the books or try something else, I prefer this direction of keeping the spirit of the story alive but going in different creative direction.
i respect your point of view, but i'm kind of glad that i didn't read this post before seeing the movie

So how long until we get a street fighter that takes place after 3rd Strike? I want to see Q again.
Hard to say, because they kind of wrote themselves into a corner. Lots of fan-favorite characters like Bison are dead for good after III.

Then again, just because a character is playable doesn't mean they have to be in the story, I suppose.

Still, people find it hard to accept brand new characters. People hated SF3 at first, because nobody was recognizable, and now people are shitting on SFV's new characters, too, despite the fact that everyone and their mother is gonna look back on characters like Abigail and say "Why can't Street Fighter 8 be more like SFV?"
