As an amateur writer, I don't find it insulting if my book gets enough fanfare to the point where people can take characers, places and events from my world and pour their own creative juices in it. That doesn't mean anything to me. Just because you don't "find" it insulting doesn't mean it's not an insult. And just because it may not have been intended as an insult, doesn't make it not an insult, either.
