I wouldn't say a natural progression of the conversation equates to derailment - there have been plenty of threads that have done that and remained unlocked.

However (using old Serious as an example) - if Meta were to make a thread on the EU, and suddenly on Page 2 Chally and Kinder are screaming about North Korea with no natural progression to connect the two topics, that would equate to a derailed thread.

I always thought this was an asinine thing to say, and the Mythics on b.old would say it all the time.

It may not be hard for you, but you're failing to account for the fact that not everybody is you. Some people are opinionated, and angry. I haven't seen you express too many controversial opinions before--hell, I don't recall seeing you having an argument with anybody.

Not saying you have to, but this is why you haven't really ever gotten in trouble before. Because you don't... really... post anything. You probably actively avoid engaging in heated discussions about your convictions/passions (if you have any at all), and though that may be easy for someone who lacks such convictions, for those of us who do, it's a little bit easier to have a run-in with the mods.

And sure--a lot of it has to do with our own lack of self-control at times, but really, it's just an irritating thing to say. "It's not that hard". I don't know--maybe if you had opinions you felt like were worth losing your privileges over, you'd understand.
