On second thought, I think I actually regret indicting that guy. From what I understand of the Forest Hunter covenant, the whole point is to invade people, but not in a way that's completely toxic. You're just supposed to be "protecting" the forest, because I'm the one invading. Which is fair enough, I guess.

The problem I have is how it's communicated. When you're invaded by a Forest Hunter, the game still announces their presence as a "dark spirit," which makes me think that they're just a regular invader, and not anything special. Someone just told me, though, that there's no special notification for Forest Hunters.

I think that's pretty lazy design, and it could've been communicated a lot better. Still, in the future, I'll try to hold off on indicting Forest Hunters. Or I'll just become one myself, for the time being, at least until I get the Darkmoon Seance Ring.

Almost three bosses in, so here's some quick thoughts on my online experience so far:

I still hate messages. They're absolutely everywhere, and they only serve three functions: to help, to mislead, or to meme. Memes are, 99% of the time, an unfunny waste of my time that takes me completely out of what otherwise would've been an immersive experience. Helpful hints are very unnecessary and for casual babies only. All they do is spoil the game for you, which is really fucking lame. The ones that mislead you are cunty and people who write them should be shot, even if it's super obvious.

I understand what they're going for. Not knowing whether a message is going to be truthful creates an interesting little dynamic, but if you're a smart player, you'll know that the best option, every single time, is to simply ignore them and play the game your way, because there's always a chance you'll just be misled. The rating system doesn't help, either. It's true that higher-rated messages are more likely to be of use, but all this means is that the game's solutions more likely to be spoiled for you.

Take messages like "illusory wall ahead." If they're right, they just spoiled the location of an illusory wall for you. Wouldn't it have been so much cooler to find that one out on your own? That's a negative. If they're lying, it doesn't really hinder you at all. You just stab a wall and nothing happens. That's a neutral. A negative plus a neutral equals a negative. This is a bad mechanic.

There are two things I like about messages: the fact that they're created using a limited selection of words and canned terms, rather than letting you type in whatever you want. I understand that this is where a lot of the humor in the memes comes from. Being able to say something juvenile becomes all the funnier knowing you have to work it out through the limitations of the writing system, which forces you to be a cunning linguist. The problem is, people aren't creative about it. The same old jokes and memes get posted up all over the place, and it's just not that funny anymore. But with that being said, I'm willing now to concede that these jokes may have been funny at one point. I still dislike that they break your immersion, though, and for all the praise that the game's immersive atmosphere gets, I have never seen anyone bring up how hard messages tend to shatter it.

The other thing I like is that you can rate them. I have no use for the upvote, but I do get a smug satisfaction out of downvoting every stupid meme message that I see. It does my heart good to know that I can actually do my part in changing Lordran for the better. Just wait until I join my favorite covenant.

Thing #2: Bloodstains. I hate them. They're absolutely everywhere, and I just don't care about them. I don't care how some random person died. I guess it's supposed to make me cautious, or something, because if I see a lot of bloodstains everywhere, I suppose that's my cue to prepare myself. But when I played offline, it's not like the game wasn't teaching me to be cautious on its own. Why the fuck does it think I need all these, then? Again, all they do is ruin my immersion and make everything look messy.

Last thing: At first, I thought it was kind of neat how you get to hear the Bell of Awakening getting rung every single time some other person online rings it (or at least, I assume that's what's happening). It's the sound of a bunch of new players overcoming their first truly difficult obstacle in the game, which is strangely uplifting, and it's cool knowing that your own accomplishments will literally be heard across the world. However... it does get pretty annoying after a while, because it's a constant thing, and you hear it all over the place. It could just be because the game is still brand new on Switch, though, so hopefully over the course of the game's lifespan, I'll start hearing it less.

I haven't been invaded yet, and I will not be doing any invading myself, because I'm just not that kind of person. I also won't be doing any summoning, because I don't need it, but I'm not opposed to being summoned myself.

Other weird things have been happening lately that I can't explain: on two or three occasions, a strange ball of light appeared out of nowhere near my character, which gave me an extra swig of Estus.

Later, as I was going up the elevator from Firelink to the Parish, this message appeared: "Disasters are gone after the defeat of the Gravelord Servant." Nothing happened after this. Minutes later, the message appeared again. Still nothing happened. So, uh, I'm not sure what's going on with that.

It doesn't make sense only because you yourself don't like it.
