The Flood / Re: Another year down, another bottle of whiskey to lament over« on: December 28, 2018, 11:51:16 PM »There is. Almost none of us here have ever met each other and haven’t forged the type of friendships you can have when meeting someone face to face.i do not see a meaningful difference whether i see a person physically or not, i'm getting exactly what i want out of a friendship with them through our interactions--when i hang out with my best friend at my house to play smash, the medium that's between us is the video game we're playing, or the movie we're watching, or sometimes it's just the air between us the words we say to each other are chosen for each other, and because we're friends, we speak a certain language to each other--i see him, i see his clothes and hairstyle, the image of himself that he wants to project to the world and say "this is me" with, and to me it all just seems like a game, because the fact is, you're not your clothes and your not your hairstyle i've known him for 15 years, and i know him very well, but i can't ever know who he truly is, and i wouldn't know him any better or worse if we had met over the internet instead--the only difference is that he'd be wearing a profile picture or an avatar instead of clothes, which is really the same kind of thing--you're not your profile picture, your profile picture is merely a projection of what you want people to perceive about you i can concede that it's a different form of interaction, but i don't see it as a divide, and when i use that word, i mean it in the sense that the differences are so great that they are irreconcilable or incomparable i just dislike it when people pretend as though the internet is this extraterrestrial realm where things are so different and people act so different--when they really truly act the same, and in some cases, the internet serves as a better microcosm for the human psyche than the real world ever could, and that's part of what makes it so useful and intriguing Quote It doesn’t mean these are worthless experiences or conversations, but I’d say most people just aren’t real about who they are. Half the people here don’t interact with other in the way they would if this were in person. A lot of people play a character. You can meet a lot of cool, decent people online but there is a clear difference between a friend you can see every day and one you’ve never seen before.again, do you think people don't play characters outside of the internet? do you think people are real about who they are outside of the internet? 1893

"people lie and troll each other on the internet, so you can't trust anyone"
yeah, unlike the real world where you can trust everyone "the internet allows people to be anonymous so they can get away with saying fucked up shit" in other words, the internet allows people to reveal to each other who they REALLY are—even if what you really are is a worthless troll—making it even less of a facade than the one created by physical social interaction, where we try to make ourselves look presentable to one another due to obligation, among other smokescreens, that basically serve to do nothing but obfuscate the seedy underbellies, or the true cores of our being which is not to say that no one has ever been honest outside of the internet, just that there's no reason to trust or distrust anyone in particular based exclusively off the medium they're using to interact with you—if i just met you, whether it's on or off the internet, i have no reason to assume virtually anything about you—it's all the same shit the internet isn't a special mask that people wear—it's a mask, but it's just another mask in a big collection that everyone has and uses, and nobody, on or offline, has ever really seen anyone's true face; indeed, some people can't even see their own (and maybe no one truly can, since we're constantly learning evolving as individuals) either way, all of this takes place under the purview of the physical material world, so there is, literally, metaphysically, no reason to divide "the internet" with the "real world," because they are objectively one in the same, and the former cannot even exist without the latter—everything that happens in life is part of life, obviously the only things that aren't part of our world are fictional or imaginative worlds, ones created in stories or dreams, and the internet is neither of those things 1897

Gaming / Re: Super Smash Brothers« on: December 28, 2018, 01:02:15 PM »I'm going to drop Mewtwo. Way too floaty for me and I don't like that he's got two specials that are essentially stuns. Simon's been fun so I might give him a shot instead. That or Link.well, the side+b reflects stuff, which is super nice but yeah, i was never a fan of mewtwo's floatiness, weight, and moveset--he'd probably be my main back in melee if he played exactly how i thought he should, which i can't really say for many other characters i play simon, so i could probably give you a couple pointers - smashing the stick forward as you throw his boomerang will make it go super far - the same technique can be done using forward/backward with the axe to throw it further or not as far - holy water can be caught, so use it wisely - down-angled forward airs are useful but scary, since you can accidentally do a down air instead, which will result in an SD if you're edgeguarding, so i often opt for down-angled back airs instead - down-angled forward smashes are useful for sniping anyone hanging off ledges when their invincibility is gone, and because of the sheer distance that it reaches, less intelligent opponents won't see it coming (AIs probably will, though) - up smash reaches far enough to strike those standing at the top platform of battlefield-type stages - his tether recovery is weird because it doesn't use the standard Z-air command, and it doesn't work if you're too close to the ledge, but if the ledge is just above you, you can do an up air and it'll work - the down tilt followup can be used to swiftly leap across the two side platforms of battlefield-type stages, which is an uncommon but decently effective escape technique that i don't see a lot of people use (simon doesn't have a lot of speedy movement options, so you take what you can get) 1900

i've reached a point where i'm perfectly content with how things have played out, really, but maybe that's because i was never a bungie fan to begin with
always hated the halo franchise, and only joined the website on a sheer whim at the recommendation that i do so by a friend who used to browse the site, and as a result, i spent most of my early days trolling and taking the piss out of all the fanboys that used to pervade the flood, until i found private groups, and discovered that i could vent out my autistic frustrations with my life over there instead the few friends i made, who were, for better or worse, the glue that kept me stuck the website, instantly migrated from the forums the moment the site updated during the rollout of the first destiny game, like any other sane person would, and spent the next year or so on IRC channels until some crazy obsessed people started making these weird offsites that were designed to replicate the look and feel of a website like bungie.old (which, honestly, if you really think about it, is a little bizarre) point is, though, i never felt all that emotionally connected to bungie.net, so looking back on it brings back the same feelings i get from when i used to use dogpile instead of google--vague nostalgia, but an understanding that things are probably better off now, since, what the fuck was i even doing there in the first place sep7agon getting as slow as it has been lately is much sadder to me, but i'll probably get over it too 1901
Gaming / Re: Super Smash Brothers« on: December 28, 2018, 11:24:42 AM »Last night I did one where you go up against a team of 3 high level Inklings who all spawn with a variety of blasters, have the trait that they do more damage with ranged projectiles, and have hostile trophy characters spawn in to support them every 15 seconds or so (it's the trophy where some guy sets up a mortar that fires like 10 homing rockets that track you). There's so many projectiles at all times that it's impossible to block or dodge them and they all do over 10% of damage for every hit. It's an impossible challenge no matter how good you are unless you cheese it or grind for days to get the best possible supports at level 100. I beat it by just camping out at the very bottom corner of the map in the hopes of hitting a good charged B attack and throwing one of them off the screen. Took me a good number of tries but managed to get lucky and clear it after a while.sounds pretty dumb, but using a spirit that equips you with an item called a franklin badge (which reflects all projectiles shot at you as a passive buff), any spirit that grants temporary invincibility, etc. probably would've been a more rewarding and fun way to beat it rather than what you described most of the tough spirit battles have a powerful yet easily exploitable gimmick, with one big gaping obvious weakness which may require a little creativity and lots of knowledge of how all the game's items work it's understandable that you'd prefer the ones that simply require gameplay finesse though 1902

I'm maining Fox still but so far feel I need another character for coverage because the mechanics of this game still feel pretty strange to me. Liking Yink, wanna use Mewtwo as well but he and Fox are equal in weight and I don't need 2 featherweights dying to throws at 50.mainly jigglypuff for the time being because she's quite easy working out kinks with simon, lucario, and sheik (who i just unlocked so she's particularly WIP), and by 2019 i'd like to have fully made the switch from puff to simon in terms of mains sometimes i'll fuck with ganondorf when i'm in the mood to unga, but i don't like him in this game much tbh trying to unlock roy to see what he's like this time around, i know he's really strong now but i don't know if he'll appeal to me or not picked up link briefly but dropped him like a rock upon discovering that i would have to master bomb recovery if i wanted to play him seriously 1919

Never watched them, but I'm vaguely familiar with Woolie just because he went toe to toe against Daigo in SF4 at Evo many years ago.
YouTube I never watched their content partly because I felt the name "best friends play" would just make the inevitable breakup video all the more sad and awkward. |
