Academic writing includes essays, journals, theses, and many other forms of writing. None of which should have pathos encouraged. You're essentially trash binning a third of classical rhetorical. I know you don't understand how to use pathos, but don't mislead the OP into thinking it doesn't have value. I understand pathos better than anybody on this forum (especially you). It has no place in academic writing.

According to what? He said he's in a college writing class, probably doing all sorts of essays and styles of writing.
Today, the professor spent a good part of the lecture talking about how we could find ways to integrate Pathos-based (emotional) rhetoric into academic writing. Academic writing as opposed to creative writing. unless you consider film analysis or other hobbyist activities "academic"--i certainly don't Even if he is participating in a formal debate, pathos is still a necessary component of an argument. No. It's only necessary to be able to identify when an emotional argument is being made--so that you can avoid them.

First of all, writing is not limited to formal arguments where pathetic writing is less effective But that's what he's talking about--integrating pathos into academic writing, which you admit is "less" effective (I would say it's entirely ineffective).

Yeah, it's fucky, and fallacious, but that's rhetoric. It's the art of effective persuasion, which is basically code for deception. Turns out, one of the most effective ways to persuade and deceive people is to pull at their heartstrings. No one ever said rhetoric had to be honest or fair.

Do people still use iPods?
i dunno, whatever the fuck you idiots use these days
i never got into any of that shit
you sound mad for some reason
consumer culture and this idea that i have to be in the "know" about apple's next shitty product irritates me
All you need to know is the new iphone has no headphone slot, and the new Galaxy S catches on fire
all the more reason for people to go back to their ipods, right but they don't--now you understand my disdain

Also, "penii" is not a word stop using it.
It's a word now. English is a magical language. It's alive and it evolves. Words are added and taken away every year. I'm just ahead of the curve
It sounds retarded is my point.

But remember, it's wrong to be proud of your people and want to preserve your ancestral lands. Listen here you racist shit lord, it's not my duty to educate you but I will anyways!
It's wrong for only WHITE people to be proud of their ancestry because it's built on the backs of oppressed minorities! Everything white people have to be proud of is racist, and racism is power plus prejudice! It's okay for Native Americans to be prejudiced because white people are invaders and it's not racism because they have no power!
Check your privilege!
I can't tell who's propping up the bigger strawman. Yes, Native Americans are silly people who are concerned with stupid shit like ancestry. No, that doesn't make hegemonic imperialism okay. This land is not ours. Fucking white devil.

A lot of people say this because they falsely think a penis determines sex, that's wrong. It's BALLS! BALLS ARE WHAT MAKES IT A GUY OR NOT. Balls produce the testosterone that make the cock thick, bunch of veins, and rough because it's a penis that belongs to a man. But if the penis is small, silky smooth, then it's a feminine penis because it belongs to a girl.
I went to college for this. it's definitely a grey area, and part of the reason i think it'd be better to eschew labels

Blogs don't belong in Serious.
Also, voting for someone out of spite would make you fucktard.
Just because it doesn't suit your political narrative doesn't mean it doesn't belong in Serious.
"narrative" is such a cringey buzzword Blogs don't belong in Serious. It doesn't matter whose """political narrative""" you suit. There is nothing to discuss here.

If there were such a thing, yes.
homosexuality = sexual attraction towards qualities traditionally associated with one's own sex rather than the opposite sex
that said, there's no such thing as masculine vagina or feminine penis
what a bigot holy shit
oh, sorry: Not That There's Anything Wrong With That™

I get really squeamish when I see childbirth-related and bloody stuff in games so the first time I saw this in Bloodborne I felt very uncomfortable.

Bloodborne really seems like it tries too hard to get that edge in. Like, apparently you can pick up umbilical cords as items? WOAH THAT'S SO METAL xDDD

I'm a huge sucker for this trope. It's basically when one of the game's main (typically upbeat) themes has an evil counterpart. For example: Wind Waker's Great Sea theme: Dark reprise: Context: After catching wind of Link's progress, Ganondorf casts a dark spell over the Great Sea, inducing an endless, stormy night in order to make it more difficult for Link to voyage back to his home island. Fittingly, the music that plays during this section of the game is an ominous reprise of the traditional seafaring theme, interspersed with Ganondorf's own theme for effect. It's one of the favorite sections of the game.
Jade Cocoon's hub village theme: Jade Cocoon is a criminally underrated JRPG for the PS1 that combines elements of Final Fantasy and Pokémon to create a pretty solid game with a great story, top-notch voice acting, an innovative monster merging system, and character designs by Studio Ghibli. And, on top of that, a killer soundtrack. The only problem is that the game is pretty short--but I digress. The above theme plays when you're visiting your home town, which serves as the game's "hub." It's a gentle, sweet, and welcoming little melody that's quite pleasant to the ear. Perfect for your peaceful, quiet village. And then we have its dark reprise. I recommend that you avoid listening to this track if I so happened to pique your interest in the game--if you want to check it out, it's better if you go in blind, I think. Context (spoilers, if anyone cares) This track plays during a particularly unsettling and feelsy section of the game. Late into the game, an important character is about to be sacrificed to the God of the Forest in order to save your village. This character reveals herself to be Azura, the goddess of sewing souls--or, as she's known by the townsfolk, the "Goddess of Death."
Using her powers, she siphons the souls of all the villagers away, zipping them into the ether. Their physical bodies on Earth are instantly turned to stone, quieting the village completely. You find out about this all on your own; as you walk into each individual house, you discover that everyone has been turned into stone--even your own mother, who sits peacefully in her home, completely oblivious to all the tragic shit that's transpiring.
All the awhile, this lonesome, empty-hearted, and almost bone-chilling reprise of the traditional village theme plays. It's quite beautiful, yet very sad. It makes me feel hollow as fuck every time I listen to it.
Shining Force town theme: Dark reprise: Context: This track plays after your home city gets destroyed by enemy forces, which kickstarts the rest of the game's plot. It's amazing to me how they took such an upbeat, happy-go-lucky tune and arranged it into this heart-wrenching funeral dirge. Walking about the ruins of your city and spotting wounded soldiers all over the place with THIS song playing in the background is quite the affecting experience.
Do you have any favorite examples of this? I can't be the only one who loves it when games do this.
