Yeah I phrased it poorly. I don't really know how to describe it. I get that it's supposed to be funny, and they're obvious red herring villains from the beginning, but man I can't stand any of their interactions. The gangster dialog and gestures are just really off-putting to me. I know a lot of people think it's hilarious, but it just doesn't do that for me.

Still better than Team Flare, though.
Fair enough--I personally love the shit out of them, but the first time I noticed their speech patterns, I thought to myself, "Wow, I can't wait for people to miss the point of these characters." At least you clarified.

Just got a Porygon--my favorite.

It's starting soon.

This is the biggest Street Fighter tournament since Evo, for the record.

Team Skull is really awful. It helps to think of it as a purposeful ironic joke on the part of GF, even though it's obviously not.
...But it obviously is?

what exactly makes you think it's obviously not when it obviously is

team skull stole the game for me

I so badly want to read the thread but I still need to wait another 3 weeks until I can finally play it. The pain is real yo.

I posted this from the first page of thread so no spoilers still, heh. I'll catch up eventually.
Honestly, I'm really not the biggest fan. I played for maybe 2 hours and haven't touched the game still. I know they're supposed to be for kids, but so far I feel like they keep targeting younger and younger audiences. I cringed a few times during first two hours and haven't felt like playing much since.
The game's sense of humor can be pretty childish, but that's sort of the charm. I'd argue that you're just getting older, because the humor has been quite consistent all throughout the generations. I'm struggling to think of anything in particular that might have made you cringe--except for perhaps Hau's dialogue.

actually guys i'm pro-life now

you shouldn't be allowed to kill innocent lives just because they're an inconvenience to you

that's why we should let cancer and other diseases flourish and stop developing medicine, so we can stop this global genocide of microbes that has run rampant in our society once and for all

stop normalizing murder; cancer lives matter too

TBH if you're going to get an abortion because you don't want to take responsibility for your own actions then you should be sterilized after the abortion procedure. It would be a win/win for everyone involved.
I support this.

I take them seriously in the sense that I want for them to be taken seriously--I don't want people to view it as a joke. I think it would be nice if video games had an equivalent to the Oscars or the Palme d'Or, where the art is taken seriously and we can truly assess each and every one of gaming's greatest/most important achievements of the year and celebrate them.

You know, instead of circlejerking over what the most popular games are.

The fact that we can't is what I'd consider a problem worth fixing and, yeah, complaining about. Taking seriously.

I'd say it's GOTY because it's pretty good

Besides, it didn't exactly have a strong contest this year. Uncharted? People love that game but like to forget the mindless enemies you have to kill between each puzzle set.

Other than that, nothing else really even came close. 2016 was a weak year.
One of the worst, yeah, we can agree there.

hey, you should pick up pokemon sun and/or moon, though

Gaming / Re: Overwatch won GOTY

Yeah, Overwatch won literally because it's extremely popular.

The reason I'm triggered is because I think GOTY awards should at least TRY to be a little bit objective. You may like Overwatch and think it's a fun game--I think it looks kinda fun, and I've been following it casually over the past couple months--but to say it's GOTY just because millions of people play it?

I mean, yeah, it's a meaningless award. But it's only meaningless because games like Overwatch can win it.

I recently got to Poni Island and I've just been messing around leveling up some different pokemon and trying to catch some of the more interesting ones. My current team are all around 50. I don't really mind breeding and retraining my favorites (I'd probably just give them the same nickname and pretend they're the original). My team composition has been pretty bad so far though (poor type matching). Is there a resources that discusses building a basic team? I don't really want to just copy somebody else's exact team and movesets.
The Smogon forums are probably your best resource for that if you have the patience for them.

There are some good YouTube videos out there, but avoid ones by the user Verlisify (he's cancer).

I'd show you this, but it hasn't been updated for gen 7. It has a checklist for staple roles that your team should have (it's okay to not fulfill every role--but you should have at least 2/3 of them, I'd say).

There's also me--I consider myself pretty good at this stuff, so I could try to help out if you let me know what your team looks like. Though, bear in mind that Gen 7 is still relatively murky water for a lot of people right now, though, so even the best of resources will probably contain conflicting/theoretical information--but it's all based upon what's worked out in the past, and the metagame adapts very fluidly.

As for resetting EVs in case you fuck up or want to start from a blank slate, I think berries are the only way to do that for this generation. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.
Thanks for the info. As for resetting, I only ask because I haven't done anything for my 20 or so mid-40s-50s pokemon, so I assume their stats are pretty messed up by now.
Yeah, most people just breed to ameliorate that issue. Blank slate, fish for better natures and IVs, etc.

But yeah, if you wanted to use your old buddies, they'd have to go through the berry treatment.

At what point are you in the game? Have you beaten it already?

Oh yeah--after maxing out two stats (252 EVs apiece), you'll have 4 EVs left over.

You can invest these anywhere else--it doesn't matter and probably won't make a huge difference.

Gaming / Re: Pokemon Thread (Massive Spoilers Page 49 and Beyond!)
« on: December 03, 2016, 10:03:58 AM »
Another beginner question: Which stats should be EV trained? Do you normally do two full stats, or one full and two halfway maxed? Also, is the only way to reset EVs through berries in Sun/Moon?
It has a lot to do with what are using. Generally, always max out two stats 95% of the time--and always max out the best two.

Say you have a Chansey, whose base stat spread looks like this:

Notice how HP and Sp. Def are by-and-large Chansey's best stats. Therefore, all EVs should be invested in those two stats and nowhere else. Investing in Attack, Sp. Atk, or Speed would be a lost cause, because they're already so low by default that investing in them wouldn't make a real difference. So, focus on honing Chansey's greatest assets instead.

The same general principles apply to all other Pokémon. If you have a Machamp, invest in Attack and Speed. If you have an Alakazam, invest in Sp. Atk and Speed.

There are some cases where you'd half-invest in three or more stats, like Ferrothorn. Smogon recommends that you fully invest in HP while half-investing in both Defense and Sp. Def to create the most balanced defensive wall possible. Smogon in general is a great resource for this sort of thing.

As for resetting EVs in case you fuck up or want to start from a blank slate, I think berries are the only way to do that for this generation. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Trailer looked pretty hokey to me.
Elaborate?
it was just very very kojima-esque

i think thats what he means. kojima-ness is hokey.
Yeah this.

There were a couple points where I just had to roll my eyes and say, "Okay, Kojima's kinda jerking himself off a little bit."

The game looks intriguing--I just hope the pretentious artsy shit gets toned down a little.

Not legally.

Morally, it's a different ballpark.
No it isn't. A person is someone with an identity--someone with thoughts, opinions, emotions, and other personal idiosyncrasies that make them an individual. A fetus has none of these things

Quote
It's also not really rhetorical to refer to it as killing. Ending the life of an individual is killing them; whether it's immoral is a separate question.
"Kill" has weasel-ish-ly negative connotations, so I find it disingenuous and manipulative to use the term for this subject. You use the word to describe and vilify the actions of murderers--serial killers. It's for the same reason I try to avoid using my preferred term--euthanize--because it's biased for my views. A parent who delivers his or her child from a miserably squalid life is not a murderer, but they're also not a saint or a hero.

The most neutral, non-partisan term you could use is "terminate"--but I'll still use the word "kill" just to humor my opposition.
