The Flood / Re: is england safer than america?« on: March 05, 2015, 04:19:43 AM »This was a bit of a troll post. The "a bit" part is worrisome. Quote You seem to be more educated then I expected.I'm about to get a Master's degree in criminal law and I wrote my Bachelor's thesis on this exact subject, so I like to think I know what I'm talking about. Quote But how is the above quote wrong? Criminals have no cares for the lawThey do, though. This is known as the lawbreaker paradox. Just because criminals, by definition, have broken the law, doesn't mean that they do not abide by any of them. Why do we still have any sort of laws? Why do we impose speed limits and other traffic regulations? After all, "criminals" by definition will not follow the rules anyways. Why do we have laws against rape, murder and violence when "criminals have no cares for the law" in the first place, as you said? Aren't all laws useless, then? The good people, those who won't rape and pillage and murder, would behave properly without a piece of paper signed by lawmakers telling them what to do. And the bad people, who as you say don't care about any laws, are going to ignore these rules anyways. So what's the point in having any law? To quote, " Laws against murder, rape, and theft would be abandoned out of fear that criminals wouldn’t follow them, and that they would thus hurt law-abiding citizens who ostensibly murder, rape, and thieve out of self-defense." Laws are necessary for a society to function and survive. Just because some people don't follow some of them, doesn't mean that they are (all) obsolete. Limiting access to firearms and making it substantially harder for criminals to obtain them has only had good results. "Even imperfect efforts to restrict gun availability to high-risk people can reduce illegal gun use on the margin, even if these regulatory barriers can be overcome in a number of ways by those who are determined to obtain a gun". Quote but it will also make it easier for them to do what they want.It generally won't, though. Quote In the U.S., in places where guns have been virtually banned, the crime rate hasn't dropped as much as other parts of the country, in some places it has actually risen.Do you have a source on it actually rising? Even the "worst" cities in the US have found their crime rates decreasing. The problem with these areas are that they are (and have been) the so-called crime capitals of the US. These are cities and places that have had long histories of gangs and organized crime. Chicago, for example, is the traditional gangster city, which is now ridden by gangs. Using these cities as an example that gun control doesn't work is tantamount to putting a bandaid on a festering and gaping bullet wound and then claiming bandaids are useless for any medical treatment because the person ends up dying. Despite the fact that these areas are usually "islands" of stricter gun regulations surrounded by other counties and states with substantially looser gun laws, which results in most of the guns used in these crimes are simply bought elsewhere and then brought into the cities, violent crime has actually significantly decreased after stricter gun control was implemented. Ask yourself this. Do these cities have a lot of crime because they have strict gun control? Or do these cities have strict gun control because they've always had a lot of crime and would be considerably worse off if the criminals there had easy access to firearms? 8855

The Flood / Re: is england safer than america?« on: March 04, 2015, 05:01:52 PM »
I will go over this very briefly.
Britain has more violent crimes per person than the United States does.Wrong, Britain just has a broader definition of what counts as a violent crime and is actually considerably less violent than the US. Quote Britain also has more petty crimes than the United States per person because, to defend yourself and your property, you can only use "equal" force. So if a 300 lb weight lifter comes to your house to steal your stuff and he doesn't have any weapons, so any keyboard warrior like ourselves are not able to use any weapons.Wrong, again. The only thing you are not allowed to use in the UK is "grossly disproportionate force". Quote Since 2003 gun ownership has steadily increased in the United States. Since 2003 both violent and petty crime has gradually decreased. Not only is crime rates gradually going down a steady phenomenon in every single developed country regardless of their gun legislation, but this is also something that has been the case for longer than 2003. Also, gun ownership has not steadily increased in the US, it's typically less people owning more guns. Quote Remember, bans only take things away from law-abiding citizens, criminals don't give a shit if they are breaking the law, that's why they are criminals.Wrong. Now, as for that poster of yours. Spoiler ![]() It starts off by using an actually valid FBI source to show how many gun related deaths, suicides and accidents there are. But now, what does it use to "prove" this is only a fraction of the self defence cases? A 20 year old study that has been ripped to shreds and was made by a heavily critized and biased "researcher" that was supported by the NRA to come up with his absolutely absurd findings? Looks like we're off to a good start, as we can completely discard this first "argument". Same thing can be said for most of the other "sources", half of which done by Kleck and the other ones dating back to the 80's and 90's. Hardly any credibility there. Not to mention that other things are just factually incorrect. Despite the obvious bias in putting a few third world countries with insanely high murder rates up against the US and proudly proclaiming how great it is in not being as bad as Nigeria, it's a fact that most comparable Western developed countries (France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK...) all have murder rates that are over 3-4 times lower than America's. Either way, I said I'd keep it short. tl;dr: this is nothing but propaganda for the ignorant and uneducated. I genuinely hope you're trolling and don't actually fall for this. 8858

As much as I love the Souls games, the boss music never really got to me. Gwyn's and Allone's are probably the best ones, I'd say.
By that I mean that they fit the game and their respective fights very well, but none of the music was something I'd considering downloading or actually listen to outside of the game. 8860

Quote Is part of your income still generated by parents/family?They provide me with a monthly allowance, yes. Quote Realistically speaking, what's the most amount of money you ever imagine yourself having in your hands at one time? Can't pin this on a certain amount, but it's probably going to be quite a bit. A Master's in Law at one of the top 15 law schools in the world along with a second Master's degree specialized in IT and IP law should land me a very solid job, especially in our current society where things like big data, privacy, information technology and intellectual property are booming. Quote What's the lowest amount of money you think you could survive off of, on your own with no backup or external funds?Very little, if I didn't have to pay for rent. I don't spend much money as things are, and I'd be fine with very modest meals. Quote To what extent and how much do you value money?Definitely not the most important thing in life, but it's necessary to live comfortably and do the things you enjoy. 8862

The Flood / Re: How sexist are you? Time to find out!« on: March 03, 2015, 05:16:55 PM »
I'm genuinely curious to see how exactly they're grading this. Does this me answering that I don't believe are morally superior to men add to my sexism score?
Edit: after a few quick tests (same baseline of answers compared to a few deviations), it turns out that it does. No matter what you pick, you are always sexist in one way or another. If I think that woman are morally superior, I'm benevolently sexist and am supporting the traditional gender roles and the view that women are somehow more pure and deserving of a special different treatment than men. If I don't think they are morally superior, I'm hostile sexist and have "negative feelings towards women". Looks like no matter the choice, we can't win and will always be sexist. 8875

Gaming / Re: Finally beat Dark Souls, YEAHHHH.« on: March 03, 2015, 10:37:37 AM »Inb4 flee tells you to beat it at soul level 1, no bonfire, no weapon, no estus, blind foldedTo be fair, when you play it at SL1 with RTSR (which is necessary to do any kind of decent damage), pretty much any hit from any boss will instantly kill you anyways. No bonfire and no estus wouldn't really add to the challenge, it would just be a pain having to run back every time you died. No weapon would be a pain because of the low damage, but using the tumblebuff glitch you could effectively buff your bare fists with Magic Weapon, which is possible at SL1, so that would help quite a bit. Blindfolded though, now that'd be a pain. LobosJr has attempted a blindfolded run where he basically just listened to someone next to him telling him what to do, but he never finished it. 8879
