It's a very alien concept to them. It's generally complicated with a lot of bits, pieces and near unlimited options. It's hard to learn and easy to mess something up, which only increases the reluctance.

At worst, you only lose your souls when you get invaded and lose anyway, but you lose them so often anyway that it's not that big of a deal.
That's a shame I was hoping it was a bit more punishing, I never participated in PVP (never ended up finishing it either) because of aforementioned feeling of tediousness over difficulty. I keep telling myself that I should take another crack at it to see if I'll like it more seeing as how it took me a couple tries to get into Dragon Age.
Well, it is a little more punishing than that. If you die while being invaded, it counts as any other death. Any bloodstains and souls that you could still retrieve would disappear at that point. If you die as an invader, you just return to the last bonfire of your world and have to retrieve your souls from where you started the invasion. And yes, you should play it again. >_>
