The Flood / Re: Youtube WTF are you doing?
« on: March 23, 2018, 03:49:32 AM »
The problem is that Youtube just uses their algorithms to decide everything and doesn't handle anything in case by case scenarios. One particular user Mr. Repzion had all of his videos demonetized in the wake on the adpocalypse, even his videos that had nothing to do with anything (like his cereal eating videos). IIRC he never got them remonetized, Google just doesn't give a fuck.

It might affect them but I don't see how it's guaranteed. It might fall under the "install accessories" section but everything should be decided on a case-by-case basis so that for example historical content can still be exempt.
But that's something else entirely though. We've already talked about how moderation and monetization are two different things. I think I made a solid case that YouTube doesn't ban or strike people through an automated process (with the exception being the detection of copyrighted music) and haven't seen anything proving me wrong. Moderation is done manually after users flag content for breaking the rules. Demonization is done automatically based on keywords because companies advertising on Google don't want to be associated with certain types of content. And the latter is all too understandable. On TV, their own sites or in real life, companies can pick and place their ads however they want. But if they partner with the likes of Google, they lose some autonomy over that. And part of that deal is that they can trust Google to properly manage the ad placement and presentation properly. I think it's perfectly reasonable for these companies to not want their products tied to and promoted with certain videos about controversial topics. I have no doubt that youtube/Google has received mountains of complaints from its clients about how their products are advertised next to something they think is inappropriate for business.

Don't forget, YouTube makes most of its money from these advertisements. More ads, more users and more viewers = more money. Every video that's demonetized is a loss of revenue for YouTube as well. They just have to balance it with the needs of their clients.

As for Repzion, I don't know the details of what happened to him. If he really had videos about just cereal demonitized, then that's clearly a mistake that I would assume has been corrected. As I said, youtube wants to keep these people going because they make them a lot of money. They have nothing to gain from randomly removing ads from videos. But if this screenshot is correct, I can definitely understand why some videos were demonetized. "Is rape too far, my family raped me, fatshamingweek and suicide, watching your daughter get raped, Islam strikes again, Krokodil drug, I don't believe in rape culture" are just some of the titles of his videos that were affected. They fall pretty squarely under YouTube's "controversial videos" category that doesn't receive monetization, being "controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies". In these instances, I can definitely see why YouTube took action.

YouTube obviously makes mistakes but I have seen little evidence of widespread abuse and the arbitrary and irreversible striking down of "innocent" channels. Moderation is also different from advertising, so I don't think we can draw clear parallels here.

I try to spread the word about alt-tech sites but normies don't really give a shit, and until something forces them to, Google, Facebook, and all the rest will maintain their monopoly on social media.
I'd be a lot more sympathetic to these alt-tech channels if they weren't almost all detestable shitholes pushing lies, hate, fake news and inflammatory content in an attempt to drown out reasonable and intellectual discussions and promote division, filter bubbles and populist shite.
If an open platform to distribute whatever the fuck you want is populist then call me Richard Spencer fam.

Actually no, don't do that. Spencer likes Jews. I do not.
I'm not saying that an open platform is populist. I'm saying that this particular one has been designed with this kind of stuff in mind. I'm skimming through the bitchute popular/trending section and it's shameful how slanted, misleading and hatemongering this stuff is. Antisemitism, pro-Nazism, chemtrail conspiracy, clinton planning a coup conspiracy, buy gemstones to ward off bad spirits, "Trump Recruits Zionist Neocon John Bolton for War with Iran", holocaust revisionism, illuminati, false flag attacks, fake / highly misleading news about Zuckerberg and Facebook / Clinton committing treason, rise up against Islam... And that's all on just the first page of the trending and popular sections of the site. These are the high standards of top content on your typical alt-tech platform. You'll probably just meme about the antisemitism here, but this is a pretty serious concern. We're already dealing with enough filter bubbles and echo chambers as it is, but now imagine a large  chunk of people moving to these platforms where critical thought, intellectualism and factual, balanced and informative content is completely absent and has been replaced entirely by these fake news, misleading and hatemongering videos by people pushing for less understanding, more division and a greater fanbase that'll follow them without question. And that alone is enough of a reason for me to steer clear of the "alt-tech".

No, he's supposed to be an entertainer. The dude has great talent with marksmanship and a bretty good understanding of ballistics. He shoots weird guns at weirdly long ranges.  I don't expect anything more or less from him than that.
Good to know. I had always been under the impression that he's this neutral and reasonable guy steering clear from politics and this kind of stuff but guess I was wrong.

Look fam, cooperations can say all they want, but that won't mean I won't believe them.  If a robot wasn't behind the flagging process and removal of channels then the hickock event would never have been a thing that is always in the back of every guntuber's mind.
Gotta say that I don't think it's very reasonable to just assume YouTube relies on robots to automatically take down videos after flagging when this is pretty illogical and literally all the evidence points in the opposite direction while you have no sources to back anything up. Seems to me that your own preference for these kinds of videos and channels might be a factor here, so I don't think your argument is convincing.

Also, hickock himself made an announcement saying that his channel going down had to do with him also (accidentally) sharing them to Google+ without being aware of the different rules there. YouTube's gun policy has also been restrictive towards people advertising gun sales so I wouldn't be surprised that a guy whose videos feature(d) lenghty descriptions filled with sponsored links to gun stores would fall under the scope of that. The fact that his videos on the full30 video hosting site do include these promotions and links while his YouTube ones don't make it seem like that definitely has something to do with it. Nothing of what I've read even implies that this was an automated process that got him shut down after mass flagging.

Serious / Re: School shooting stopped almost immediately
« on: March 22, 2018, 07:49:10 PM »
Wondering why we're not hearing this on mass media, regardless.
This always seems like such a disingenuous and loaded thing to say, as if the evil big media is deliberately ignoring news when it doesn't coincide with its hivemind agenda.

One, the ultimate impact of this is low. Same reason why one person dying in a car accident doesn't make national news while a bridge collapsing and killing 6 does, or why a small company getting hacked doesn't get picked up while one leaking the personal data of 50 million people does. In the end, one person was killed. That's cold to say but ultimately not that big of a story.

Two, it's looking like the shooting was targeted after a breakup and, according to the police, "not a random act of violence". It's very questionable that the shooter was planning a massacre and pretty unlikely that another major mass shooting was stopped. The media attention would probably have been greater had the officer stopped someone going on a rampage in an attempt to kill as many as possible, not a kid who couldn't deal with a breakup and was out for revenge.

And three, literally every single mainstream media outlet has reported on this and usually several times too. The OP directly links to CNN but a quick google search will show you that ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Washington Post, NY Times, NY Post, Reuters, AP, NPR, Vox, Al Jazeera, PBS, CBC, The Hill and many, many others covered it. It even made it overseas where the BBC, Guardian and Telegraph all ran pieces on it. It was on the Reddit front page and even found its way to my Facebook the day it happened. It definitely gathered quite a bit of media attention.

YouTube staff reviews the reports and
No, a robot removes it after enough flags are filed. Then the content creator can file for a human review after the fact, which may or may not get answered.  This is how you grief channels with mass flagging attacks.
Source? I haven't read anything backing this up other than anecdotal posts without any proof they weren't actually breaking YouTube's rules. It also wouldn't make any sense. Controversial political videos by big channels receive thousands of downvotes and haters. If simple mass flagging would automatically trigger the video being removed, I think we'd be seeing a lot more of this. Take Anita whatshername's gaming videos. They are downvoted into oblivion and no doubt reported hundreds of times by salty people. If what you say would be accurate, it would be well known and we'd be seeing this used widely on reddit, 4chan and all sorts of boards looking to silence the opposition.

I'm also only seeing sources disagreeing with what you said. Independent news outlets and even YouTube itself flat out state the opposite.

http://www.adweek.com/digital/youtube-myths/

"YouTube has turned to their community to identify which videos potentially violate their Community Guidelines.  If a viewer flags a video that they think violates the TOS and Community Guidelines then YouTube staff will take a look and, if it is a violation, they’ll take the video down.

Many people believe that if you flag a video repeatedly then YouTube will eventually have to take it down. In truth, the first time a video is flagged YouTube checks it out. If it is found to contain violations it is taken down.  If not, it is marked as reviewed and future flaggings will have no impact.

That being said, if you go on a flagging rampage that is clearly a trolling attack you may face the consequences.  You may want to check out YouTube’s Community Guidelines before you start flagging."

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7124236?hl=en

"Please note that flagged videos do not automatically get removed. We have trained internal teams, fluent in multiple languages, who carefully evaluate your flags 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year in time zones around the world."

why shouldnt people have access to information on how to rebuild a gun they purchased, if you want someone to keep their gun well maintained, so it doesnt jam or backfire why shouldnt someone have access to that information?
But no one is saying they shouldn't have access to that information. YouTube is just making clear they don't want that kind of content on their platform because they don't want to pay people for doing that and because they don't want to be associated with weapon culture and the people that misuse firearms. That's it. There's a dozen other places these people can turn to to share and access this information instead.

Quote
Millions of law abiding gun owners are once again getting punished to the causes of a few, and yet again playing the guardian for parents who should be doing their job properly.
Kind of strange for you to be calling Youtube "cucks" when it's the poor law abiding gun owners and their supporters who are now complaining so much about their horrible suffering from their persecution because they can't post certain kinds of weapon-related content on a single website anymore.

Quote
'Guns are bad' is the media Boogieman at the moment, so of course theyre going to mass ban
I have my doubts, but I'll suppose we'll see. They've also given content creators a grace period to remove content violating the new guidelines.

No algorithmic decision-making but always a human in the loop.
That's not how flagging on youtube works.
Then how does it work? Algorithms determine the order in which videos are shown and picks up on copyrighted content used. People flag videos they think break the YouTube TOS. YouTube staff reviews the reports and, if they find it violates the content guidelines, removes videos and strikes / blocks channels. That's what I thought happens.

Yeah, screw a private company for not wanting people to use its platform to sell and advertise guns or instruct others how to modify and build them! Fucking cucks am I right or what??

It's going to affect even completely mild channels like Forgotten Weapons though.
It might affect them but I don't see how it's guaranteed.

It pretty much is guaranteed. The algorithm based methods GoogleTube uses always fucks over any videos that seem even vaguely related to whatever is being targeted.
Do we know if it will be algorithms deciding this though? You can also still appeal.
In adittion to the already present algorithms for demonitization, I think I read that the firearms specific restrictions are gonna be based off of community led moderation through  flagging and the like, which sounds like an even worse idea that's more exploitable.
That's what I thought too. No algorithmic decision-making but always a human in the loop.

YouTube regularly ignores appeals
YouTube also regularly grants appeals when there's actual reasons to do so. Appealing doesn't give you any right to have your videos reinstated, it just means that they'll look at it again. The article in the OP already confirms this by giving two examples of gun channels that were exonerated and received an apology after appealing and arguing they didn't break the rules.

Gotta say that I see nothing wrong with this. It wasn't 343 making fun of PTSD, it was Cortana trying to mock and destabilize the spartans any way she could by referring to their past experiences and traumas in an attempt to get to and distract them. That's like saying DC is making fun of orphans and homicide because they have the Joker bringing up Batman's parents dying and laughing about it to throw him off his focus.

What a moron. There's several ways he could've made the exact same point without actually pulling out a knife to simulate a threat while talking to a student at a school.

And what fucking cancer the comments on this videos are.

Suppose I wanna show you my pocket knife by saying "Hey Flee, check out my pocket knife, pretty cool huh?"

And I pull it out and show it to you. Are you gonna call the police?
Come on now. Don't make me explain why that is not even remotely comparable.

My point still stands. He made a point, yes it was extreme and the crowd over reacted.

If he pulled out his knife and flat out stabbed the girl, that's a completely different story.
He made a point that could've been made just the same without actually pulling out a knife while talking to a student in school. That was a stupid and counterproductive decision. I'm also not seeing much overreacting anywhere. The kid was clearly shaken up by it and the parent saying "stop it" to the guy was fully justified. He wasn't mobbed or attacked and no one called the cops. The school administration just asked him to step aside and walked out with him while the audience was pretty visibly shocked.

people don't react unless there's a real immediate threat.  Hypotheticals dont tend to register with normal people/commoners
And what a reaction he's getting. Reasonable people will look at this and consider him a moron, and the very people he's trying to convince will be even less understanding now that he's painted the wonderful picture of pro-gunners pulling out knives when talking to students in school to push a political agenda. I'm really uncertain as to what you believe I'm arguing.
Well, the link in the OP basically states that conservatives are being persecuted and censored just for having right leaning views. I asked for supporting evidence and you responded by saying it's not necessarily conservatives but instead those who speak out against the establishment. Apologies if I interpreted that incorrectly or maybe you didn't read the text of the petition itself, but I think it stands to reason that your response across as you agreeing with the notion in the OP (institutionalized and organized measures taken against a group of people) only now for the anti-establishment folks instead of just conservatives. My bad for missing your point but the way you responded did give the impression that you largely agreed with the part of the text I referred to.

834
The Flood / Re: Do we need an Internet Bill of Rights?
« on: March 16, 2018, 10:07:51 AM »
Is there any actually major evidence for the whole "conservatives are facing institutional persecution online" narrative?
I don't necessarily believe it's conservatives, but rather people who speak out against or pose some threat to "the establishment" or the values it espouses. I have seen people on both the right and the left, as well as centrist types face censorship/demonetization online. What links them together is they they seem to be critical of mainstream media, government, or those with institutional power. The left just holds more of that power right now when it comes to tech, so it would make sense that those on the right would be more inclined to criticize.

Although, youtube did admit to banning right-wingers recently, though they claim it was a mistake made by the new staff they hired to police content on their platform. What I would like to know is who exactly did they hire that felt it was acceptable to censor/suspend channels for being right-leaning?
That's not really evidence though. What links these channels together perhaps more than their anti-establishment attitude (something I already think is way too broad of a statement) is their propensity for fake news, aggressive rhetoric, inflammatory approach to controversial topics and "dangerous or extreme" content violating YouTube's ToS. Youtube is a business and advertising is hugely important to it. Demonenitization isn't so much a punishment of censorship of the right as it is a message of "hey, our advertisers and investors don't want their name attached to a video entitled 'liberal morons cucked & Hillary for prison for faking school shootings' so we'll be disabling monetization on it". Of course, mistakes will be made, but I have yet to see any decent proof of what you argue. I'm also skeptical of the notion that these companies employing tens of thousands of people are actively persecuting "the anti's" without there being any more proof of that.

And youtube never admitted to banning right wing channels. To my knowledge, it just admitted to making mistakes with its moderation without going into specifics, something which likely referred to temporarily blacklisted and then reinstated videos. I also don't think anyone was suspending channels for being right leaning but rather for putting out content that they (mistakenly) deemed dangerous, harmful or hateful in light of recent events (gun / conspiracy videos after the mass shootings, for example). Lots of pressure on the companies, lots of new recruits, likely mistakes to be made.

Just to be clear, nothing in my post was intended to be glib or condescending. I know you're not interested in the specifics of my job (which only makes sense and goes both ways), but my point was pretty simple and just to try and help you. Your negative experiences and background have shaped what pops into your head when you think of a job, being a lowly paid, pointless, menial and annoying endeavor you repeat endlessly. Of course, the same applies to me and I'm biased to the opposite, although I do have to point out that I have worked jobs involving children, administrative work and packing/stacking kind of deals. I'm not here to tell you how awesome everything is or how narrow-minded you are (I'm actually legit surprised that's what you got out a post that I thought was sincere and just an attempt to help). I'm just here to tell you that all of the bad stuff you fear about jobs isn't inherent to being employed.

I get what you say about time, but I see resources as something very broad. Access to knowledge and tools that aren't public or easily available otherwise, a view behind the scenes, an actual opportunity to make impact / affect things or talk to certain people... A job can help you with all of that. Perhaps you don't see yourself caring about much of that now, but I can see it being true even for you.

And I know that only few people can do what I do. I know that not everyone can get any job and that there isn't a perfect career out there for everyone. Of course that's bullshit. I'm just saying that you shouldn't sell yourself sort. You're clearly not an idiot and seem to have more potential than what you're making things out to be.

Anyways, I'm not here to try and convince you that jobs are cool and fun and that you should get one or strive for more. What you do for a living doesn't affect me much. I doubt I'm the first to tell you this stuff and I have no illusions about how much you care about what I'm saying. Like I said, I just don't want you to wake up one day with most of your life already behind you and suddenly realize how much you've missed out on and how many opportunities you threw away because of your militant state of mind and currently very negative thoughts on all this stuff. You do you, but I just didn't want to stand by without at least once giving you some advice or providing a more positive pov.
