Had an exam earlier myself. Cybercrime, this one was. Spent the rest of my day studying for my next one, being international criminal law.

Read the rules, this site requires you follow American law, and that means you have to speak English.

We deport people for speaking Spanish.

that would be way too hard to measure

i can imagine the fucking arguments
It would be glorious.

And I know it would be near impossible to do. It would still be interesting though. I'm blissfully ignorant about how certain games introduced certain additions and influenced games to come since. Would be a good read. You could even present it as a massive timeline with forks and whatnot.

Gaming / Re: What games would you add to the Video Game Hall of Fame?
« on: June 07, 2015, 02:59:41 AM »
It would be cool if they divided it by genre. As an FPS guy, I'm obligated to put in the holy triumvirate of Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake.

Gaming / Re: The "video game hall of fame"
« on: June 07, 2015, 02:57:43 AM »
That doesn't mean that the average person today will know what it is, even if they heard the name somewhere.
I agree. It would be cool if this hall of fame did the opposite though. Like actually do some detailed research on what games exactly changed and influenced what. Still a cool concept like this, but this more the equivalent of "let's do a survey with random people on the street and ask what video games they find familiar". Pacman, Pong, Tetris, Super Mario... It's fun and all that, but I think it would be a lot more interesting for us, being the people who actually care and know stuff about video games, to have some big project done on what games really shaped their respective genres.

it will definitely end up on this list methinks
Doom is already up there. Unless you were somehow refering to Quake.

Seems like a good list so far. Would've also expected Quake I to make an appearance.
A great game, but it didn't leave quite enough of a lasting impact to make the list.
I gotta disagree. Quake took the basics of Doom, added a console and shaped pretty much every FPS game that currently exists.

The Quake engine served as the basis for the entirety of Valve's Source engine, some 007 games, Medal of Honor, the later Wolfenstein games, Quake Wars, Rage, Doom 3, Prey, and pretty much all of the COD games.

Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are the godfathers of the FPS genre, but it's Quake that made it significantly faster, better, competitive and laid the foundations for pretty much all FPS games to come after. I personally don't think either of the three original games (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake) deserves to be the one landmark game for the FPS genre by itself. But if I had to pick the one that made the basic concept into what we have today, I'd go with Quake.
It built upon what Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM already did. It in itself wasn't revolutionary, and despite the fact that it did indeed bring FPS closer to the current day, it hasn't had the lasting recognition of Wolfenstein or DOOM. If you ask anybody, DOOM or Wolfenstein is that really old shooter. They are recognized and, unfortunately, Quake isn't.

Not to say that I wouldn't agree if Quake made the list, because you're right, it's a fantastic game. But at least for the first wave, the games that set the industry? I can see why it didn't make the list. At least yet.
It comes down to what the point of this list is, really. The games that most people recognize, or the ones that were actually the most influential to our current standard of games? Probably the first, unfortunately. Would be cool to see the opposite though. This is probably just going to turn into a handful of games that most people know in combination with those that sold the most copies.
