Septagon / Re: Calling Members Out
« on: July 25, 2015, 01:12:09 PM »
I'm not entirely sure what's unclear about this rule.

In general, threads calling out another member are discouraged. Discouraged, but nothing more. Depending on the content and context of the thread, a mod will usually leave it open. However, if the thread is malicious in nature, it will always result in a lock and a potential warning. A couple of months ago we still prohibited all threads "calling out" other users, even if they were not malicious. That really wasn't a good solution, however, because even genuine threads asking questions or simply joking would be locked.

"Attention person X..." = fine.
"Person X, what do you think of...?" = fine.
Non-malicious joke about person X = fine.

"Person X you're a retarded asshole." = not fine.

All depends on the context. If you feel like a thread is malicious yet hasn't been locked, you should report it. If you feel like a thread is locked for an unfair reason, you should PM a mod and mention it.

He's actually going along with the Supreme Court ruling and saying it's time to move on from Gay Marriage, and he's supportive of banning abortion after 20 weeks, with the exception of saving a mother's life.

And he also just seems to go along with his constituents.  He introduced a bill to curb collective-bargaining for public employees.  Ohio voted NO, and he moved on.  That's someone I'd like, rather than someone wasting my tax money trying to repeal Obamacare for the 48934th time.
That doesn't change anything though. He's settled down on the gay marriage issue because he knows the battle's over for now and that he can't go against the supreme court. He's still completely anti-gay and just because he's smart enough to realize there's no way he can now go up against the court directly doesn't mean that he won't jump on anti-gay measures as soon as the opportunity rises.

Props to him for realizing that hammering on the same old issues won't get him anywhere, but the fact that he's still an openly anti-gay pro-life pro-death penalty bible thumper means that he won't hesitate a moment to push those views when he gets the chance, regardless of him now stating that he's moving on from gay marriage because he knows he can't do anything against the supreme court.

I wouldn't call this the most hype pro gaming event by a long shot
It unfortunately doesn't receive the exposure it deserves. Few games rival Quake's competitiveness and these guys are playing at an incredible level.
Nobody cares about Quake for a reason
Because of casual scrubs who rather play games like the Witcher, AC and Telltale than to learn to understand a game like this? I hear ya.
whoah now, the witcher games are pretty good
Never said that they weren't.

A few good points, especially in regards to rehabilitation, but then there's things like

>companies and not government regulations should protect the environment, anti-Kyoto
>cut education budgets and funding (kinda) and give more power to local schools
>pro-life and firm opponent of abortion
>anti-gay (in general, marriage, adoption)
>FOX news host on a batshit insane program
>insane christian ("it's God's job to judge if the punishment fits the crime", "bible stories are historical facts", "evidence says that the earth did not come about on its own", supporting amendment for school prayer)
>pro death penalty
>pro gun
>demanded that a professor saying 9/11 was brought on by the US got fired

Yeah... Would not vote for, even though he may have some decent economic policies in mind.

Actually, I'm not pro-gun.  I am just pointing out how stupid Max's comment sounds when he seems to place the blame solely on the guns.  Yes there need to be better ways of making sure criminals can't get access to guns, but outright banning them isn't the solution.
Very few people actually advocate a complete ban on firearms. And while Max' comment was very general and unspecific, it can hardly be denied that the US has a genuine problem with guns.

Wrong. Gun free zones are what causes mass shootings. You ever see a mass shooting at an NRA event or at a hunting expo? Nope. I wonder why....
Gun free zones are a stupid idea. I never claimed they did anything. Generally more restrictive gun regulations do, however.

Day 1 results: Team Unknown / Meltdown (Western European team) won the TDM part of the tournament. As already predicted, they are quite possibly the best deathmatch team in the world, only rivaled by the Russian team Deliberate Murder.

Today we're on to Capture the Flag, which is a gamemode that the American teams traditionally are really strong at. Should be interesting to see how the Europeans will compete.

Don't worry, guys. Guns still aren't a problem.

It's definitely not the shooter's mental instability, oh no, it's those pesky guns! They just grow a pair of legs and think, "I'm gonna go shoot some people today!" and run off to the nearest theatre to blow everyone away.
Don't worry, guys. Guns still aren't a problem.

You're right bro. The 2 guns I own have both gone on killing rampages by themselves. I gotta lock them up better. Damn guns always killing people on their own
These are quite possibly the absolute worst arguments you can make to support a pro gun stance, as not a single person in the world believes that guns on their own actually kill people. People kill people, and the incredibly easy access to firearms facilitates this to a great extent.

We all know it's the video games at fault.
I'm going through all the tweets that people are making about this whole situation.

Maybe I should stop before I start to lose brain cells.

There were some REALLY retarded ones that were so bad they were good but I lost them in the sea of tweets. I'm not gonna dig those up.
To be fair, they're not all wrong. Can't really argue with the fact that the US has a disproportionally high rate of (mass) shootings compared to other developed countries, and that a lot of that has to do with the prevalence and accessibility of guns in your society.
That's not the problem though. The problem is the mainstream media outlets reporting on these mass shootings. They're the ones adding fuel to the already burning flame.

They tell everyone watching what type of gun(s) the shooter used, the type of ammo, the place they shot up, the back history on the shooter, the race of the shooter, how many people they've killed, the shooter's intentions on why they did it, and hell they even compare them to other shooters from shootings that happened in the past like they're keeping a high-score counter or something. Why do they have to go into full detail about all this shit? Leave it to the police to have these details, not the public.
But it is the problem. I agree that the media fuels the issue, but it's not the cause or the main contributor. While media coverage affects some of the shooters, its an absolute minority. The vast majority of gun deaths in the US aren't part of mass shootings, and the ones that are rarely are directly inspired by media attention. Look at this case for example. This wasn't some disturbed kid going for a high score or trying to make the news. This wasn't a person who ended up shooting up a theater because he saw the media reports on other shooters. Details are slim, but this was an almost 60 year old man who snapped and then killed himself. I strongly doubt that the media detailing the weapons used and the amount of deaths in the Sandy Hook shooting or something similar led to this.

So yeah, the media coverage doesn't help and can inspire some. But to say that it is to blame for this is absolutely ridiculous. The US has a gun problem and there is really no denying that.

Are you actually going to play that thing out in the open at public places?
Only when I'm wearing my matching Fluttershy shirt, of course.
By looking at people like you I can understand why there are kids getting bullied. It's hard to not blame the victim when they are basically asking for it.
Are you upset because your favorite pony is low tier like Applejack and I went with Fluttershy for my 3DS?

Several reasons. As people already pointed out, MOBA's have a natural progression to their games. Your typical game can take quite a while and requires quite a bit of time invested (especially including the matching up and pre/post game stuff). Unlike many other games where people can easily drop out or join in progress, or where the game's duration is significantly shorter, you're kind of stuck with your team unless you want to abandon them mid-game and potentially face the consequences for that. Because of this, falling behind or having one or two bad players on your team can result in a very slow, long and tedious game lacking any fun. It's a format that breeds frustration in that sense.

Another reason is because the games are pretty casual. Not a very popular opinion around some places, but it's a true one nevertheless. MOBA's bombard you with unlocks, little rewards and praise all over. The games are very accessible and it's easy to get decent at them. This combined with their massive popularity (which is mainly brought forward by the developers themselves investing millions in marketing and promotion) generally attracts the worst of the gamer crowd. What CoD is to the FPS games, MOBA's are to the competitive scene. Easy games with lots of unlockables, constant rewards, microtransactions, a very artificial but still compelling esports scene and amazing popularity? It's the perfect breeding ground for the typical 14 year old Mountain Dew MLG kiddos who play CoD on the Xbox, but this time for PC.

That all aside, this doesn't mean that they're bad games that can't be fun. I've played LoL and DOTA with friends and had quite a good time. But they do attract a lot of shitty people.

If you bought a 3DS that's what you're going to be playing unless you want to use it as an N64 port machine. Most of that shit isn't even "weeb" apart from maybe Tales of the Abyss.
Bravely Default teems with weebery.
This.

It is not my 3DS as I would never get one (yes, the thread is b8), but it's my girlfriend's and she's had it for months. Bravely Default is the game she's been playing the last few days and it really is quite weebery.
