Why would I? If it's what you like doing, are willing to potentially sacrifice a stable income and are well aware that the odds of you becoming a succesful actor are very much against you, then you should go for it.

You can now buy the Gjallarhorn for $9.99?
$19.99

But it's a monthly subscription to the Gjallarhorn manufacturer, so you can keep this amazing weapon
But is it the only way to Become Legend™? Not buying it otherwise.

Damn, I was hoping you'd go into law after reading the title. It's so lonely at the top here by myself, after all.

Then again, I have heard some pretty bad stuff about law in the US, so it might not be that attractive over there.
Well I was thinking law school after I get my BA in poli sci, at least that's the current plan. My minor is in legal studies though. Pre Law Bachelor's programs are generally garbage over here. They end up being some of the lowest scorers on the LSAT (entry test to law school). The programs just generally, even though they cover the content of law, do a piss poor job of preparing you for what you'll be doing in law school. Skills like analytical thinking, writing, etc.
That is pretty different from what it's like here, yeah.

Serious / Re: Swedish sword attack at a school.
« on: October 26, 2015, 01:35:04 PM »
Trying to hypothetically play out how things would happen in a fight like this generally doesn't work very accurately. Saying that "Oh, the victims could crowd the man with the sword, or pick up broomsticks and fight him off" doesn't sound like a very strong argument to me. If a man with a sword walks into a room full of Grade School kids, that's not ending well unless the teacher has a weapon and gets in front of the attacker first, even then it's a gamble. The only definitive thing that would stop the assailant is someone with a firearm. Anything else stopping them is subject to luck.
Key difference is that a gun has the advantage of distance to it. You run into a crowd with a sword and start hacking away. You might manage to hurt a handful of people before the rest disperse and run away. You do that at a school and within minutes, people are fleeing the building knowing that you can't hurt them unless you're within 2 feet. You point a gun at people and tell them not to move, there is not a thing that they can do. You can kill anyone in the group disobeying your order. Do that with a sword and people will just run for their lives while you have to chase them around individually with a clunky sword. Standing in a central hallway with a gun will effectively allow you to shut down the entire building. People opening a door at the other side of the hallway, you still get to fire at them and scare them back inside. With a knife or sword? Good luck not having everyone flee while you can't do anything about it.

It doesn't need to be harder to kill kids with a gun than a sword, the end result is likely to be similar. Unfortunately in the case of a sword attack, you will have more gore and any survivors are probably more likely to be traumatized.
I have to disagree. At the same day of the Sandy Hook shooting, a similar massacre occured in China. A man armed with a large blade entered an elementary school and started attacking children. Almost the entire school evacuated and escaped within minutes because he couldn't do anything to stop them while he was busy in a particular classroom. Despite that, he still cornered a room and stabbed and cut over 20 children. Every single one of them lived.

People can use pretty much anything to kill others, but you can't honestly deny that some tools are vastly more effective at it than others. They're more easily transported and concealed, do more damage, are easier to use, have greater range and accuracy, cause more severe injuries, exert more pressure over people, are harder to escape / fight / block / hide from, are better at crowd control, are easier to fend off "good guys" with and so on.

I agree that firearms would be a great way to stop bad guys with swords, but by making firearms more easily available you are also going to see an increase in bad guys choosing guns rather than blades. It's an unfortunate tradeoff.

Sartre is such a good dog name.

Too highbrow. I like it, though.
It's what I wanted to name our dog. My girlfriend hated having to pronounce it, so we ended up going with Darwin.

Just as I was about to offer you a beer and to show you around my city, you do this to me. Harsh man. Harsh.

Well I don't drink beer, but if I ever do make my way to Belgium I'll let you buy me a Coké.
Not even god tier fruity beers?

I do think so. Not always, of course, but sometimes. It can be entertaining when you're bored, expose you to new points of view different than your own and helps you hone your own debate skills or knowledge on a certain topic. Plus, I've had a number of people tell me that I actually changed their opinion or taught them something new, which is always a nice feeling.

Serious / Re: Heightism
« on: October 26, 2015, 05:04:27 AM »
I think it's been pretty well established that taller men generally are more succesful in life and tend to be accepted better as leaders or positions of power. But to ascribe that to some "heightism" normative discrimination against smaller people? Seems a little ridiculous imo. Being tall is just something that most people find aesthetically pleasing and that (historically) brought quite a few advantages. Not really different from how beautiful people are also generally treated better and end up more succesful than others. Nothing you can really do about it, it's just today's standards of what's aesthetically and physically pleasing. Doesn't mean anyone should discriminate against shorter people or treat them differently, but this is not that different from "perfectcheekbones-ism".

Serious / Re: Why should transgenderism be something we "accept"?
« on: October 25, 2015, 06:30:30 PM »
Well how exactly would we go about fixing it?
I'm not a scientist.

The point is we're not viewing it as something we need to fix, so we won't try to fix it.
Pretty sure people have tried to fix this for ages without much success. Seems to me like we really don't have very many options here. You either try getting to them change (which so far is about as succesful as "pray the gay away" camps) or you support them by giving them the chance to become the person they feel they are, regardless of whether or not you think of it as a good or bad thing.

Serious / Re: Swedish sword attack at a school.
« on: October 25, 2015, 06:05:50 PM »
Do you really want to know how many kids and some teachers a man with a sword would be able to get through before police responded?

The different locations the attacks occurred at do matter significantly.
Not gonna argue with the fact that these were two very different situations, but you have to admit that it's considerably easier to run away from or fight a guy with a sword than it would be with a gunman. Multiple people surrounding him and keeping him busy with chairs or any makeshift weapon/shield would probably be pretty effective, and if you attack a crowd with a sword you might be able to get some while the vast majority will run away by the time you can get to them. It's a lot harder to run from a rain of bullets, and it's a lot easier to use a gun to injure and kill a group of people than it is with a sword.

Two very different scenarios that should hardly be compared, but you can't honestly argue that it would be harder for the guy to kill and injure more kids if he had access to a bunch of guns rather than a sword.

The only way to stop such a travesty is if there was a good guy with a sword.
Unfortunately there's people who actually believe that.

Putting the number of likes inline with the buttons looks ok for users, but it looks odd for staff. Where they are now allows them to be out of the way while filling the space that used to house the IP link.
oh

so we can't find out someone's IP if they're stupid enough to screenshot their own post without censoring it?
Pretty much. It's hidden in the motto and karma dropdown menu.
