And for a very brief second, I felt kind of smart because 9.81m/s^2 popped into my head. At least one of my high school physics teachers would be proud.

The Flood / Re: why america is the greatest country on earth« on: December 23, 2015, 01:12:26 PM »However in America speak out against that. In Europe, mostly everybody is glad people get jailed for saying something they disagree with.I'm not glad about it though. And I know many other people who aren't either. I support certain restrictions on free speech when they're in accordance with the criteria set forth by the European Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights. If those things that happened in the UK would take place here, I'd be up in arms over it. Quote You keep saying that, but it's America you always focus on. It's like you had some bad encounters with really ignorant Americans and now you're hellbent on trying to make America look bad.Well, America kind of is the one that always gets brought up. I've voiced my harsh criticism against the UK's data protection, free speech and human rights laws in general before. Unfortunately for me, almost all of our active members are from the US. Then there's a small group of UK people and one or two Aussies, but that's about it. I'd love to talk about my own country's and the EU's flaws more, but I don't really have many people to discuss it with. As the only Western European on the entire forum, my threads about things happening here would die almost instantly and generate virtually no discussion unless they relate to global affairs or somehow affect the people here. Trust me when I say that I don't have a hateboner for the US. It's just that it's the country talked about most on here, which makes perfect sense seeing how most members here are American. I understand that it might skew your perception of my opinions, but I really don't have anything against the US. I visited the country numerous times and have spent time in a bunch of states around the country. I generally like the people and its culture, and I very much recognize how much of a dominant and influential super power it is. It's by any means one of the greatest countries in the world and I greatly appreciate all of the contributions it's made to mankind, along with being pretty jealous of some of the things you guys have over there. I think the US is great, but flawed. Just like any other country in the world. If I seem to criticise it more than my own country (or any other country for that matter), it's simply because this is an American forum hosted in the US by two American administrators and a vast majority of members being American talking about American affairs. Literally no one would care if I made a thread talking about shit Belgium does poorly, but contributing to already existing discussion on the US is usually more interesting. 5800

The Flood / Re: why america is the greatest country on earth« on: December 23, 2015, 12:38:37 PM »There's been people jailed for (among others) things like "cyberbullying", posting violent rap lyrics, blogging about representatives in a defamatory way and joking about how they'd eat the hearts of school children after being beaten in a video game in the US. It's true that more restrictions are accepted on the right to free speech in the EU, but to claim that the US is the only country where you can say shit and not get jailed for it is simply incorrect. It's the only country where you can say shit and not get jailed for it.I'm just saying, it's like you get personally offended when somebody takes pride in being American.I don't care about anyone being proud of anything. I'm just pointing out the flaws in saying that "Country X is the best because it's unique and it's the only country in the world where you can do Y" when that's demonstrably untrue. You can have a bald eagle tattooed on your chest and wear nothing but red white and blue out of patriotic pride. I really don't care about your personal pride or anyone else his. I simply care about untruths. Stating that the US is great because you can do what that comedian did is great and something that I fully agree with it. The US is a good country to live in and it's made significant contributions to humanity as a whole. However, incorrectly stating that the US is the greatest because it's the only country where a comedian gets to do that is factually false and deserves to be corrected. Like I said, untruths bother me. Not American pride. My girlfriend is American and even though she's not blind to the country's flaws, she's still proud to be one. Either way, this thread particularly referred to being free to criticise the government. I already demonstrated with proof that you're entirely free to do the same thing in my country without getting in trouble for doing so. That's the entire point I was making, so unless you can show me differently, I don't see the point in this discussion going on. 5802

I also meant to say "outside" of Germany, not out of. My bad. Not sure if the guy actually got jailed for it though. And yeah, the UK's EComm Act is pretty fucked. That's a very far reaching provision. 5803
The Flood / Re: why america is the greatest country on earth« on: December 23, 2015, 09:18:55 AM »Yes really. I'd be interested in hearing any examples where a person got jailed for that, especially out of Germany. Not really. It generally takes a lot more than that.Problem with that logic is that you can go ahead and do the exact same thing in pretty much every other developed and/or Western country (virtually all of which recognize a right to free speech just the same, often as part of their constitution as well) and not get executed for it just the same.unless I praise one of Hitler's policies in the process, then I'll be jailed in Yoorope. He's a pretty famous Belgian comedian who has been doing comedy shows in Belgium and the Netherlands for years. Some of his main talking points are the royal family, the government and politics. Over the last two decades, he has absolutely slammed and repeatedly roasted, criticised, mocked and laughed with just about every single minister, member of parliament and part of the royal family, even going as far as joking about the queen who died days before and was actually buried on the day he launched his new show. He's criticised and mocked these people in power far more and far longer than what happened in your video. Has he been executed? Abducted? Faced criminal charges? Mysteriously disappeared? Reprimanded by the government in any way? Quite the contrary, actually. ![]() Here he is with our current prime minister who was present at the reveal of his new show and tour earlier this year. The prime minister was heavily criticised just the same and the two of them ended up at the afterparty together. He praised the show and thought it was very entertaining and funny. Same goes for members of the royal family, members of parliament and other (prime) ministers from the past. He has won numerous prizes for radio, television and comedy (both national and international), has reported for news stations all around the world like CNN, sold hundreds of thousands of books, DVD's and tickets to his show, and has just began his holiday season tour this year called "King" (part of which is based on him having himself be crowned as a would-be king by a government official to mock the current establishment and people in power). I'm going to assume you're trolling, but free speech is not unique to the US. You can do that stuff in pretty much any developed and Western country without getting into trouble. 5806

The Flood / Re: List of users you'd like to see become a mod (not including yourself)« on: December 22, 2015, 04:59:14 AM »tbh efmely moderation is more about managing discussion than the will to ban members. While the threat of punishment and the enforcement of established rules regarding nsfw/spam material is the ultimate necessary deterrent against shit behavior, a good mod should be willing to let members have their banter and eat it too, unless a specific complaint is sent to the staff. This is actually very true. I can count the number of blacklists I've given on one hand and doubt I've given out more than a dozen bans longer than a day or two. Moving threads and locking them are less rare, but simple edits and (most importantly) just talking to people are the most common mod activities by far. It's true that actually being able to ban, lock and warn is necessary for us to effectively moderate this place, but they really are a last resort. 5816

The better question to ask is how many people die in car accidents involving cars utilising more than 200hp at the time of the crash. I'd be surprised if there were any statistics on that, but I reckon it's not very many.
