To the right is a girl sleeping in her seat on the other side of the aisle.

Hey now
CS is alright. It's just extremely slow and campy with not much more thinking to it than basic team tactics.

Is DS1 going to be backwards-compatible on XOne, does anyone know? I'll probably have another stab at it if it does.
Main reason backwards compatibility is such a shit is because of licensing and contracts. That kind of stuff goes down easier with some companies than others. I wouldn't just rule it out, but I don't think it's very likely at this point. I agree with Ender that DS3 might be a good gateway, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

And to clarify

/b/ banned ponies because it was spammed everywhere, there is two known active bronies on this site and i'm the only one who really posts any amount of pony. I get hated for it.

Yet Flee talks about Fluttershy and still gets to be Best Friend ;-;
No, some of REAL AMERICANS still give Flee shit.
Yeah, I still get shit for it on a regular basis. Such is life.

You are still best friend ;-;
That' probably because Fluttershy is a much better pony than Celestia.

Like I said, I'll tear it apart later.
Also, this sounds very arrogant, but it may just be the wording you used.

Anyway, we may never see eye to eye on it, but Flee brought up a good point when he said "You may not like it, but that doesn't make it objectively bad game design."
Yeah, it's not like everybody else has made this point to Verbatim before.

The Flee dick riding in this forum is insane.
I just happen to have a lot of best friends who put up with my nonsensical chatter because they pity my non-country.

They actually don't take anything from you, you don't lose any items in game unless you choose to drop them. They gain a percentage of your souls from the victory, all you lose is your souls, which you can go and pick up from where you died. Just like any other death in the game.
Gotcha.
I'm starting to understand why you're so against the idea of invasions. Sounds like you have a lot of misconceptions about what they're like. I know it's a little too late now (since you're actually starting to play the game and this would count as spoilers), but you should read these when you're done and perhaps want to give it a try yourself. They provide a pretty good overview of what the game's PVP and invasions entail.

Oh shit, I just thought of something. Verb, there is a certain PVP covenant (think of it as a kind of guild) called the Darkmoon Covenant. It allows you to invade people and fight them in their world. The interesting part about it is that it doesn't allow you to invade just anyone, as it only pairs you up with "sinners". These are people who have committed grave sins in the game by, most importantly, invading others and being indicted for doing so. It's basically the covenant of the righteous that sets out to kill the "assholes" who invade and kill others. I doubt this is all still very active, but it might be a way for you to pvp a little without feeling bad about it, as you don't put yourself at risk and only fight people who have sinned and attacked innocents before.

Darkmoon buff OP AS FUCK.
Oroboro's build along with Ricard's Rapier is literally the strongest build in DS1. And I rarely speak in absolutes when it comes to this.

Spoiler
They show you what the new areas are in the cutscene, though. You clearly see the tempels and red glow of the demon ruins and the darkness around the Tomb of the Giants one. It's pretty common to come across them before the Lordvessel unlocks them.

I'll respond to this later, but just know a great deal of my trepidation over this game has pretty much vanished, because I just now learned from Batch that it's possible to play offline while still being human, as you stated (I was under the impression that you were stuck as Hollow until you went online--which would have been fucking stupid)
Just saying, but this is why it kind of helps to actually play the game or at least read some things about it before you make harsh judgements. I told you ages ago that it's perfectly possible to be human and offline at the same time, but I think your lack of understanding of how these features and invasions actually work made it so that you didn't fully get that.

I also think your argument of consent is a pretty pointless one that's fueled almost exclusively by the disdain you have for this game and its community. You do give consent. The game, its manual and item descriptions inform you about invasions and what becoming human entails. Saying that this still isn't enough holds virtually no weight.

"Fallout drugs are terrible game design. In exchange for a massive damage increase, I run the risk of getting addicted and my intelligence temporarily goes down? I'm not consenting to that. I SHOULD be able to get the bonuses WITHOUT having to suffer."

If you just apply your arguments to other games, it's clear how they fall short. Consent is the cornerstone of all fun. Well, when I play Smash online I want to be exclusively paired with extreme beginners who only use Jigglypuff. Me being matched up with players who might be better or use other characters is something that I don't want to consent to. And no, just not playing multiplayer is not an option, even though it's completely optional. The point is that I SHOULD be able to do that. The fact that the game does not allow me to do that is nothing but terrible game design.

Come on now. I largely agree with you that consent is a vital part in playing these games, but there's limits to that. It's simply impossible for a game to accomodate every single little desire that someone might have. You're given the option not to play the game. You're even given the option to play the game in a way that completely shuts out other people. But if you want to play the game and make the deliberate decision to enter a certain mode where you'll get extra bonuses but at the risk of being paired with another human player, then you consent to this happening. This really is no different from playing Halo online but then throwing a hissy fit when you die because you didn't explicitly consent to other people shooting you and just wanted to run around the map, ergo terrible game design and so forth.

I mean, at this point your argument really just seems to boil down to "it sucks because you SHOULD be able to do X". Well, you can't do X. Sorry, but you can't. I should be able to play Smash Bros in first person. I should be able to have a 10 pokemon team. I should be able to take drugs in Fallout without suffering from side effects. I should be able to consent to nothing but extremely specific scenarios. But none of those things were either in line with the developer's vision, technically feasible or would just destroy the game for most. None of that makes them bad games with terrible design choices.

I too think that consent is necessary for the enjoyment of video games. But it really seems that you're taking this to the utmost extremes just because it's Dark Souls. You've put yourself in such a position for such a long time (partially because people attacked you for not liking a game) that you're kind of stuck. I completely understand why some people don't like Dark Souls. It's definitely not for everyone and it has its flaws. But just because it attaches a downside to every upside or does not allow unlimited specific customization (which no game does) does not mean it's an awful game with terrible design. And I honestly think that you know that at this point, but that you've just forced yourself (and/or been forced) into this role of the resident anti-Dark Souls guy and find it hard to go back on that now.

Anyways, I've got an exam on interdisciplinary perspectives on advanced IT and IP law tomorrow. Gotta get a lot more studying done, so I'm gonna step away from this for a bit. I doubt anything I say is going to make a change anyways and I unfortunately have other things to do first. Plus, that's not what this thread is supposed to be about and yet there's already 6 pages on just this. I just hope you can keep an open mind when playing the game.

I don't think that giving every pro a con counts as bad game design at all. It makes things interesting and actually has you put thought into things. Dark Souls definitely isn't perfect, but if "you have to do X in order to get greater rewards and some bonuses but at the cost of being Y" counts as bad game design then I seriously don't know what game could ever have good game design. That's like saying "I get that I have to beat 100-man smash in Smash before I get to play as Wario, but the point is that I SHOULD be able to do that without any hassle anyways or it counts as shitty game design that forces players into doing something they don't want to". You may not like it, but that doesn't make it objectively bad game design. The game gives you the possibility to play in a way that gives you some extra rewards but at the cost of adding some potential difficulty. And I think you'd have to admit that if you weren't just trying to make a point against Dark Souls fans.

But yeah, if you're that concerned about invasions, just play offline but go human. It would be a bit of a shame as you're deliberately ignoring and avoiding one of the most unique, fun and highly praised aspects of the game you're doing a review of, but it's your choice. If you would reconsider, though, there's a few things that make invasions a lot more balanced than you'd think.

For one, you will almost always have a level advantage. Invaders can only invade people who are just below their own level, but can invade infinitely higher levels. Meaning that a level 70 invader might end up with a level 68 host, but can also easily encounter a level 120 host. Hosts typically have the level advantage.

Hosts also have the ability to summon help. Not sure what the population is like now, but back in the day there used to be a ton of people looking to co-op by putting down their summon signs. The moment the host realizes he's being invaded, he can try to summon others into his world to help. If no other players are available, the host can often even summon NPC's at the boss gate to help. They're pretty stupid but deal high amounts of damage and have a ton of health. And while there can usually only be one invader, there can be 2 summons + the host to fight him.

The host can heal. Your estus flask will be your bread and butter. It heals quite a bit of HP, gets 5-20 refills at the bonfire and is really fast to use. Invaders can't use them. They can only use spells (which are extremely slow and leave them very vulnerable) or one-time use items that are pretty rare or expensive.

Invaders can only invade in certain areas and at certain times. There's safe zones where you can't be invaded as a host and, more importantly, once you beat the boss of a specific area, you can no longer be invaded in that entire part of the game.

The host can run. The second the host makes it to the boss gate, he's in the clear. You touch the fog and the invader is sent home. An invasion does not force you to fight. If anything, playing smart will allow you to get away most of the time.

The invader needs a specific item to invade. Up until a certain point, there's only a handful of them available in the entire game. It's only after the invader basically reaches the very end of the game, joins a pretty well hidden covenant, buys a lot of one time use ones and has a bunch of victories behind his belt that he'll get the item that will allow unlimited invasions.

The host gets bigger rewards. The amount of souls you get is based on the level of the player you defeat. You get a certain % of the souls necessary for him to reach the next soul level. An invader gets a much smaller percentage of souls than the host does when he wins. Plus, the host gets additional humanities and often other rewards for each victory.

I really think you'd be missing out if you chose to ignore such a big part of the game. Invaders are not all that scary. It's really fun to fight a worthy opponent. Plus, you'll be dying a shit ton as it is. There's no extra penalty for dying to an invader. Just counts as any normal death.

I never had autists at my school. Strange it's such a common thing in the US.

They try to integrate them with the normal student body for certain classes instead of keeping then segregated.

Doesn't work very well in my opinion.
Yeah, I read tons of "tard stories" back on 4chan. Those are very rare over here as they generally have their own schools and sheltered work places.

Safety concerns, preventing accidents and making it so that others can't use your tool to cause harm.

There literally isn't. Bloodborne would be the only reason I'd consider getting a PS4 as of now.
