What games would you suggest, Verb? I usually watch Street Fighter, Melee and Tekken when I do watch fighting game competitions, but I'm open to suggestions.

Johnson and Fox? Fucking hell.
Johnson's role has been gutted, and Fox's role looks to be more about establishing non-EU trade connections.

In terms of our withdrawal from the EU, Davis is the most important man right now.

I also think her decision is less to do with putting it on the heads of the people who 'fucked it up'--if she felt that way, she would've actually campaigned instead of being an incredibly quiet, but outspokenly Eurosceptic, Remainer. It feels more like her trying to reconcile with Brexiteers by putting them in the positions they most want.
Only person who really knows is May herself, I suppose.

"similar deals would be negotiated with other key EU nations"
Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he could've simply meant the UK would engage EU governments individually to see where they stood before negotiating under the CCP. But I can't really say without seeing his specific wording.
You're more trusting than I am. I see how this could've all been a misunderstanding caused by incredibly poor wording, but I'm not particularly convinced. No matter how you look at it, the EU is a trade bloc where a trade agreement made with the Union applies to all member states equally. Talking about concluding a specific  "UK-Germany deal" where its cars will be protected in exchange for other concessions and suggesting "similar deals" with other countries regarding their particular exports sends the wrong signal no matter how you look at it.

Here's a picture of the tweets before he took them down without explanation after a lot of people started taking notice of it.

his first remarks about how Brexit would go down failed to note the fact that EU member states can't draft their own independent trade agreements with non-EU countries.
Would you mind putting this in context? It's one thing to say he "failed to note" it, another to say he ignored it to the detriment of the point he was making.
Well, he Tweeted that his post-Brexit vision included trade deals with Germany, France and Italy where their most important exports would be free of tariffs in exchange for concessions on other things. I'm not really convinced that he was just making a general point because of his use of the words "similar deals would be negotiated with other key EU nations", as it does not appear to recognize that the EU is a unified trading bloc and any deal given to one country must necessarily be given to all the others as well. When people called him out on it, the tweets were deleted and no clarification given. I admit that he may have just done an exceptionally poor job at wording his point, but it still doesn't inspire much confidence in me.

For his big plan, I'm seeing a lot of wishful thinking and delusions of grandeur. Which really isn't all that surprising, because his first remarks about how Brexit would go down failed to note the fact that EU member states can't draft their own independent trade agreements with non-EU countries. He has since removed those posts from Twitter and his site, but it is saying something that the man in charge of all this wasn't even familiar with the utter basics of EU external relations.

Johnson and Fox? Fucking hell.

Props to May though, this was really clever. Putting the most outspoken Brexiteers in these positions was the most pro-EU decision she could make. She's playing the waiting game and as it's likely for this uncertainty to last and negotiations to not go very well, people will associate these failures with Brexit and its most vocal supporters. Instead of picking pro-Remainers who could be accused of sabotage or pro-EU sentiments getting in the way of a good Brexit, she's now putting it all on the heads of the men who have been screaming for a withdrawal for months without a plan and are now being put in the front seat to deal with the mess they've caused.

Now that I'm reading it again, I didn't realise how long and ranty that post was. To summarise, my point pretty much is that I think you underestimate the other competitive genres. While many (like CoD or Halo) are pretty low tier, there's some FPS and MOBA games that are comparable to fighting games in terms of skill and depth. Of course, they don't have everything you've mentioned earlier that makes fighting games so tough, but they substitute it with aspects that don't exist in fighting games but are equally tough to learn and apply. In the end, I don't think you can really say that one or two particular genres are inherently more challenging and varied than the others.

Gaming / Re: Evolution 2016 Thread - 3 days remaning
« on: July 13, 2016, 03:20:24 PM »
]Well, not quite, because my whole point I'm trying to make here is that fighting games tend to have the highest degree of variation when compared to any other competitive genre, with the exception of RTS games which I already brought up. That's what I'm arguing.
I don't see how that's true. Why would it have a higher degree of variation than other genres? How does there being a lot of characters with a lot of different attacks and specs give the game any more complexity than games like DOTA, which has dozens of champions, different maps and heaps of different items/abilities/moves/NPCs all of which capable of affecting the way the match turns out? How does it have a higher degree of variation than CS, a game with dozens of different weapons all with their unique range / recoil / bullet spread / handling / firing mechanics, several completely different maps and a number of items? Or Quake, with several different game modes, weapons with different range/spread/damage/spread/effects, dozens of maps and its mere movement being so complex that people dedicate entire tournaments just to see who can make it through a map the quickest?

Because I don't see how it does. Fighting games are incredibly complex, but I think that arguing one genre is simply more complex or offers a higher degree of variation than the others is simply incorrect. For example, fighting games may have all of the characters with combos/specs/attacks/frame data which is more complex than say Quake, where everybody works with the same character on even grounds. But then again, Quake has a complexity of movement, map/item knowledge, item timing and immense subtleties and differences when it comes to aiming/weapon handling which are completely absent in fighting games. Both take years to master, learn, remember and actually apply in practice and can result in literally billions of potential ways a match could go, without either necessarily being more complex than the other.

Quote
]The onus is on the player to put in the effort to win, and I guess my underlying argument here is that fighting games take more effort to get good at than basically any other genre. Knowing all a character's moves isn't going to do you any good if you don't know how to use them.
Same as above. I don't see how fighting games take more effort to excell at than others. They are all incredibly complex in their own way. And while fighting games have their 40 characters with different combos and everything you've mentioned above, it lacks things like aiming, long-scale tactics, item timing, team coordination, map knowledge and so on. I think that anyone suggesting that their preferred genre is better / harder / more complex than any of the others is largely influenced by personal preference. I mean, this is a Quake defrag cup. There's no shooting, no killing, no real enemies. The entire purpose is to navigate a map and obstacles by using the game's movement and physics mechanics. The game is from 1999. These people have been playing for 17 years and spent thousands of hours on perfecting the mere movement of the game, and people are still improving and learning new things.

And I'm just using Quake because it's the game I'm personally most familiar with, but my point is just that I don't think either one genre is inherently more complex / versified than the others.

Quote
Anyway, you've conceded that it may just not be your thing, which sounds a lot more fair than claiming that the game's lack depth for whatever reason. I know you said "depth" may not have been the right word to use at first, but that just felt like thin coat of sugar to me.
I suppose we all just focus on different things, and I think fighting games lack some of the ones I really appreciate. Seeing a person display perfect map knowledge after counting his opponents health, armor, ammo count and situation, execute a flawless rocket jump through a tiny doorway three stories up, whip around 180° to land a railgun shot on a pixel or two on a fast-moving enemy in mid-air and move on all while keeping track of the spawn times and rates of 5 different items is extraordinary and based on the mastery of things that don't even exist in fighting games. Me saying fighting games lack a certain depth is not putting them down, it's just an observation. And because I personally appreciate the things they lack more than you do, I don't find them as interesting but not inferior to other games.

Simply put, the more options you have, the more in-depth the gameplay gets. So, from this fact alone, you can derive basically everything else. You take all the appeal and all the complexity of a Dark Souls-like combat system and ramp it up tenfold--that's a good fighting game. The key is in the level of variation. To me, extraordinary variation not only makes the game both fun and interesting--it makes it beautiful, as well. But that's another conversation. One that I kinda just had with Luci the other day, actually.
Sure, I don't disagree with any of that. But you could say the exact same thing for several other competitive games.

Quote
One thing to also keep in mind is that no strategy guide ever written has ever made anybody a top fighting game player. Prima has never written a strategy guide explaining how to become good at Street Fighter. You know why? Because there is no one true method. Becoming a strong player is entirely a personal journey--and yeah, people make guides and tutorials explaining ideas and concepts to people, but no one can teach you how to win. It's all earned.
Sure, but that can also be said for a lot of other competitive games.

And not that it hurts the core of your argument, but:

https://www.primagames.com/games/street-fighter-v/products
https://www.amazon.com/Tekken-Tag-Tournament-Official-Guides/dp/0307895963
https://www.primagames.com/games/killer-instinct/products/killer-instinct-strategy-guide

That's 3 official Prima guides on games hosted at Evo, including a Street Fighter V guide detailing all characters, moves, strategies, counters, frame data, combos and tactics to deal with situations.

What you say is all true, but I feel it applies to several of the most competitive games. And I think that what I feel the games lack has to do with the limits that come with what's essentially a default 2D (usually) flat arena, the breathing room between matches and gameplay that primarily relies on quick reflexes and reads of your opponent. They're great games and top tier esports, but they've just never really been my thing, I guess, even though I still enjoy watching them and find a lot of the plays really amazing.

Quit league

<3
If you thought it was uncompetitive before you should see it now

A few months back most of the pros stopped playing on the public servers all together just because the ranked system was so fucked

Not to mention i got a completely unwarranted 2 week ban by the automated system and riot refused to even look into my case
Yeah, I heard about that. I have to say though, my gripe with League has never been its uncompetitiveness. A game can be great fun without any of that. I just don't like what it did to competitive gaming. Props to Riot for its brilliant business tactics, but I'm no fan of how League spearheaded the change from esports being limited to the games which were inherently the most competitive with the highest skill ceiling and most room for exceptional mastery chosen by the fans and diehards, to esports games becoming those which its developers simply threw the most money at to force a largely artificial competitive scene. On the one hand, I'm glad to see esports becoming this popular, as I've been following them since the days before they were even really on YouTube. But on the other, it kind of saddens me how top games like Quake, ET and Melee have become second rate events with prizes only in the hundreds or low thousands of dollars while games like League draw massive crowds and throw millions of dollars at their best players to play it full-time.

Oh I know they're bottom tier. They're just the ones I played somewhat seriously. I've also played Melee and Street Fighter IV casually, but that doesn't really matter. I think I've watched enough tournaments and competitive fighting games to understand the games well. But I'm always open to learn more.
I mean, not to sound elitist, or anything. Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat are fun games and all, but Mortal Kombat was popularized for giving players the ability to rip each other's hearts out--not necessarily for the fast-paced, rigorous, mentally-demanding, and high-APM gameplay that it does not have.

I don't have much to say about Soul Calibur other than that the competitive merit of the series went down the toilet after 2.
2 was the only Soul Calibur I really played, so I guess I'm good there. And I don't disagree at all with what you said in that first part. My point was just that I've been interested in most esports since it started becoming an actual thing. I've watched countless of videos and streams on competitive fighting games and still feel it's somewhat lacking something. I'm going to watch this Evo just like I watched the last one (I stuck to highlights and the crucial matches due to time constraints then), so I'm just not really expecting an epiphany or academic experience. It's top tier competitive gaming, but I never really got into it the way I did with RTS and FPS esports.

Why do you like them so much?

Never said or meant to imply they were. They're just the fighting games I've played quite a bit and the basic idea behind the genre doesn't really change much.

The basic idea being "defeat your opponent"...

There's a HUGE difference between a deliberately casual and ostentatious Mortal Combat and the meticulously metagame of Melee.
Saying that the similarities stop there is just facetious. I never claimed these games are highly competitive in the fighting game world, and that is completely irrelevant to my point either way.

with the exception of RTS games, i would actually argue that fighting games have more competitive depth than any other genre

i could sit here and explain why, but if you happen to catch the stream--especially the ones taking place on sunday--i think it'll be academic for you

How do you feel about stuff like that and the UK possibly missing out, Meta?
We're still going to be a member of the EU for two more years, so we aren't going to be excluded from this yet. And I really can't see the US or the EU pushing for us to be removed from this during the negotiations.

Like it said in today's press release: "Data flows between our two continents are essential to our society and economy – we now have a robust framework ensuring these transfers take place in the best and safest conditions".

EDIT: Any news on that thing that was posted (possibly by me) not too long ago? Something else to do with data and privacy concerns that you said was currently going through the EU motions?
Yeah, the UK minister for data protection has said that the GDPR might not end up applying in the UK because of Brexit. I'm not on mobile outdoors now, but I might make a thread about the data protection situation right now. Interesting stuff going on, especially with privacy shield passed today.

Could anyone explain how powering up and evolving works and what I should be doing?
every time you catch a Pokemon (let's say pidgey) you get dust and a few pidgey candy. You also get pidgey candy when you send one to the Proffesor. With (iirc) 25 pidgey candy you can evolve a pidgey into a pigeoto and give them a huge power boost. With a single candy and some dust you can just raise the power level without evolving
Is there any strategy to evolving or powering up Pokemon? So far I've been catching multiple of my Pokemon and sending the weaker one to the professor right away.
No

Evolving and leveling up is the same net result. It's best to evolve them as soon as you can. It's not nearly as in depth as the actual main installment games.
A lot depends on the arch, apparently.
