There's always something interesting about being the first mod to sign on in the morning and see the forum in disarray over something that happened while I was sleeping.

Gaming / Re: Rate PC build
« on: October 24, 2016, 06:34:28 PM »
Update: I've taken advice from people on a few sites and narrowed it down to two updated builds. I'm basically set on everything except for a few components where I'm still on the fence between two parts.

CPU:
Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  (€339.65 @ Amazon Deutschland)
OR
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  (€239.16 @ Amazon Deutschland)

I'm very much leaning towards going with the i7 as I think it'll hold up better in the future and might be useful for more demanding software and (perhaps) streaming, but several people have advised me to get the i5 instead as it supposedly makes little difference for gaming.

CPU Cooler:
Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler  (€87.99 @ Aquatuning)
OR
be quiet! Dark Rock 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler  (€59.99 @ Aquatuning)

The Noctua cooler is apparently among the best there is, so I'm leaning towards that one. However, people have told me that it would be overkill for my CPU (especially with me not planning to overclock it in the near future) and that I would be better off saving some money here by going for a smaller cooler. On a similar note, I've been suggested to not only get the Noctua cooler, but also invest in another case fan (this one in particular). They're not that expensive so it's not that big of an issue, but I'm slightly worried by the fact that I've had people tell me that I need another fan for even more cooling, while others have told me that my initial and sole cooler would already be overkill and a waste of money.

Motherboard:
Asus Z170-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (€109.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Memory:
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  (€94.84 @ Mindfactory)
OR
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  (€91.44 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Both are nearly identical in price and speed (DDR4-3000), so I don't think I can really go wrong here with either. Any suggestions would be welcome, even if it's just personal preference.

Storage:
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (€104.93 @ Mindfactory)
OR
SSD: Samsung 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (750 EVO-Series)  (€76.64 @ Mindfactory)
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (€52.84 @ Mindfactory)

I'm leaning towards the 850 EVO-Series (someone told me to go with an M.2 SSD, but they really do seem a fair bit more expensive and come across like an unnecessary speciality), but I've been told to consider the cheaper 750 series as they are almost the same in performance but quite a bit cheaper. So basically, how much of a performance difference is there here? I'm planning on just putting my OS and a few important programs on the SSD with the rest on the HDD. Is there a noticeable difference between 750, 850 and M.2?

Video Card:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card  (€453.47 @ Mindfactory)

Case:
Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case  (€107.83 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Power Supply:
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (98 €)
OR
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (90 €)

Not sure which one I should go for. Since they're so similar in price, I was considering playing it safe and going for the 650W, but I have been told that the 550 will be more than enough.

Wireless Network Adapter:
Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter  (€30.00 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Monitor:
Asus VG248QE 24.0" 144Hz Monitor  (€274.52 @ Amazon Deutschland)

I've put both options into a PCpartpicker list. Option 1 includes all of the cheaper and lower tier options out of the 2 possible ones, while Option 2 is all of the higher ones. The difference comes down to about € 150.

Option 1:
http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/tgHGjc
Option 2:
http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/Zh898K

Again, all advice is welcome.

Sorry for the blurry as fuck picture, but that's how big the NH-D15 is in comparison to the rest of my computer.
I have zero fucking clue what I'm looking at now, but I'll take your word for it.
That big ass fan with the heat sinks next to it is the NH-D15. Directly below that is my graphics card.
Ah, it's a bit too dark to tell for me. What did you think about the second build I posted?

Overall solid build.

-I'd back the WD > Seagate.
-EVGA > Gigabyte
-CPU cooler looks a bit dinky.  Consider the Noctua NH-D15.  It's big, effective, silent, and the only drawback is that you need low-profile RAM for it.  I'd say it's the most powerful alternative to liquid cooling.
-If you plan to put only your OS on the SSD, and a key program or two, then consider downgrading to 120GB
I have no clue which sub brand of cards or RAM to go for, I'm afraid.
I'd recommend upgrading to a full ATX mobo and case and getting the NH-D15. The computer will be fucking huge, but it gives a ton of room inside the case to air things out and keep things cool. As for the card, I don't know much about Gigabyte, but I'd recommend switching to EVGA or possibly MSI. Also change your magnetic drive from Seagate to Western Digital. Seagate hard drives have a propensity for failing.

Sure does make it quite a bit more expensive though. Actually, not really. It was primarily the missing cost of the power supply in the first one.

Build seems pretty solid for the most part, but why Micro ATX mobo on a mid ATX case? Also, Seagate hard drives have a bit of a bad name, I'd recommend sticking to Western Digital for the magnetic drive. Also, you should throw in an optical drive too. I realize they're going obsolete, but they're also dirt cheap and pretty nice to have around on the rare occasions you actually will need to use a disk.
To tell you the truth, my knowledge of PC components is limited to CPU, GPU and RAM. I have no idea what cooling to use, what motherboard I'd need for everything to fit on it and what kind of case I need to hold everything. I just based myself on two highly rated builds on PCpartpicker and went with what they said. I picked a case, motherboard and fan that had a lot of reviews and good ratings.

I more or less know what GPU I want (GTX 1070), what CPU (the i7 6700k) and RAM (2x8 GB), but everything else is up in the air. So if you have any suggestions, do tell me. I'm completely unfamiliar with the exact brand of GPU/RAM I should get or what cooling/motherboard/case I'd do well with.

I just picked a random point in the video because I don't have the time now (and I wanted to hear his accent, which honestly has left me a bit disappointed), and I'm already not sure about its accuracy.

The ECJ rejected the appeal to lower EU officials wages in 2010 not because they served themselves, but because the Council simply did not have the competence to bring the case (which was entirely true). For them to accept the argument would be a true travesty and violation of EU law. But what really strikes me is how he then fails to mention that on an actually legal appeal filed later, the ECJ not only blocked the pay rise for EU staff, but also rejected requests for 3 years of backdated wages which people wanted in light of the crisis becoming better.

I get that the guy is obviously trying to push a certain point and have not heard the other things he says, but it seems a little dishonest to present the argument that the Court is so flawed because judges ruled in their own interest when in reality their hands were pretty much bound and they had no choice but to reject the appeal, and then choose not to mention that they overturned it and reversed the judgement when a legal inquiry was made.

Why do you like his accent so much btw?

Is this for Quake Live?
It will no doubt be used for Quake Live too, but that's not the sole or primary purpose. My current "gaming" pc is a 5 year old laptop that is falling more and more apart. Keys have started falling out, the headphone jack is halfway broken, terrible screen tearing on any game, low FPS on recent games even at the lowest settings, it randomly crashes relatively often and gets these fits where everything refuses to work (seriously have no clue what it is, but my explorer crashes, the task bar freezes, nothing will close or open and rebooting my PC takes 45 minutes if I reset it rather than just wait it out).

And now that I'm no longer a student and gainfully employed and my girlfriend has a job of her own, I'm thinking about getting myself the kind of PC I've wanted for a few years now. Oh and work gave me another laptop, so I can use that for stuff now too.
Well now you won't have an excuse when I kick your ass ;^)
I look forward to it, although I'd still play you as it is. :)
No, no its fine
Spoiler
It'll save me from the embarrassment
Haha. I'm really not that good though. A bit above average maybe, but I haven't played nearly consistently enough to get to the level I was at a few years ago.

Also, I forgot the best part about my laptop. I need my wicked external cooling system (read: a table fan pointed at the side of my laptop) at all times or it'll overheat and crash if I play games.

Gaming / Build me a PC
« on: October 21, 2016, 04:30:10 PM »
So for the first time ever I'm actually looking into building a proper gaming PC. While I have a good understanding of how computers work and what parts do what, I have no clue what parts I should put into it, what would be compatible (or not) and so forth. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Don't really have much of a budget in mind, but I'm aiming for a pretty decent set up. Thanks whoever can help me out or point me towards some good resources.

And yeah, I know there's places like Pcpartpicker, Reddit and Userbenchmark that have info on this stuff, but this is much more fun before I turn to one of those sites.

We're wasting our time anyway. Hillary will be the next president of the united states because that's what the establishment wants.
So have you already started packing? There's screenshots and pretty clear proof of you promising you'd leave the country if Trump loses.

Unless you're just going to do as predicted and come up with the childish "it doesn't count this time" excuse and blame everyone and everything instead.

1. I said I would go to Alaska.
2. It's obvious it's rigged.
3. Why would I care about a "promise" I made to a dying forum?
I'm actually surprised. I was expecting you to at least keep it up until after the election instead of coming back on your word even three weeks before the actual vote.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a decent swath of shy Trump supporters - the undecided/unaffiliated bloc of voters for this year is slightly larger than in past Presidential elections.

That being said, I don't believe it's enough support to tilt the election back into Trump's hands - at least nationally. You may see some states that end up being much closer than what's currently being predicted.
This.

I also imagine that there's probably a decent chunk of shy Hillary supporters out there too. Given how divided the election has been and how much shit both candidates have gotten, I imagine there's a lot of places or social circles where people are reluctant to admit they are voting for Clinton.

So what's the current state of hackers in this game? I've heard Blizzard is doing well at taking them down. I'm very reluctant to call out hackers, but today I feel I might have played one. I was a McCree up against a Mei on the other team. Every single time I flashbanged her, she used her ice capsule right on time. I started counting it and came up on at least 5 instances where I flashbanged the Mei (several times from behind or outside her point of view) and it always got blocked just in time by her shield. The flashbang doesn't really make a noise nor is it very easy to predict (especially when you're not even looking at the person).

I suppose whoever was playing her could've just gotten very lucky and it does sound like a strange as fuck hack, but it was just kinda weird.
