I believe it's only admins who can see reported PM's.

But since we mods are above all rules in the first place, it wouldn't matter either way. Hooray!

Loan for what?
For drugs, moron.

Can't you read?
I figured that the no good druggie part was an explanation of why you couldn't get a loan at a decent rate, not that you'd gotten a loan for general and drug purposes.

I actually had tea this morning for the first time in years. My Chinese colleague brought some tea leaves with him from his last trip. Pretty good.

The Flood / Re: Most boring book ever
« on: November 29, 2016, 03:42:41 AM »
Jane Eyre is alright. Most boring one I ever read was De trein der traagheid by Daisne. Literally the train of slowness. A riveting tale of a man asleep on the train dreaming of talking to two other people on the train, all in archaic Dutch. Thank goodness it's only like a 150 pages.
That actually sounds pretty cool
Even better, the official English translation is "The train of inertia", which sounds even less exciting.

http://buitenland.vfl.be/_uploads/Downloads/downloads/Daisne__Johan___The_Train_of_Inertia__EN_.pdf

I'm unable to find an English version online, but you might be able to get it somewhere. It's apparently a classic in the "magical realism" movement, although I doubt any translation would do it justice.

Honestly, I'd probably like it a lot more now if I'd read it again. I wasn't exactly able to appreciate it as a 13 year old who had to read it as an assignment, lol.

I'm buying my first pair of gaming headphones right now. Currently going with these, the Sennheiser 360 Special Edition. Opinions?

This is what I personally use.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E5A1GCG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're actually pretty damn good for $20. Though if you want to burn $200, that's on you. Also, these headphones are good for the Xbone as well.
Got them for $95 and they work on the Xbone just the same. :)

Oh. Okay.
They'll be for music around the house too. My old ones are kind of dying on me after almost 8 years, so this will be nice.

And it should work with consoles too. The comments about it not working are from 2013 when the first model launched. The 2015 version comes with an adapter so you can use it on any 3.5mm slot, including ps4 and xbox one.

Personally a fan of Audio Technicas with a Yeti Blue for PC gaming.  The only thing is you need to make sure your mic doesn't pick up your keyboard.
Mic is noise cancelling and made with that purpose in mind, so it should be fine.

Y doug?
I've never had an actual headset before. I have great music headphones (although their age is starting to show), but nothing with a mic. Since I was considering getting some anyways to go with my pc, the random amazon cyber Monday deal came at a great time. Amazing $250 + headphones for $95? Yes please.

Anyways, to my knowledge Sennheiser is a decent brand and almost all headsets in the $250+ provide great sound quality, are comfy to wear and all that other important stuff. So go for it anyways.
Good point, but I'd say Sennheiser is more than just decent. It's easily one of the top 3 or 5 best headphone brands out there and my personal favorite. It's also compatible with all consoles and I got it new for $95 on sale, so pretty good deal I think.

Nowhere, really. I don't subscribe to a political philosophy
You do--everyone does--you just haven't found the right label yet.
Yeah, fair enough. I just don't think I fall under any of the established labels. I know that everyone has their political philosophy.

Serious / Re: Give me one reason why I should want "unification"
« on: November 28, 2016, 02:20:39 PM »
Are you saying our accomplishment wasn't beneficial to us regardless of its intentions?

That's only because you were in a dick measuring contest with Russia and wanted to one up their first man in orbit.

In any other circumstance the moon would not have been anywhere near as much a priority on people's minds.
I think he's saying that "space" is not the motivator now it once was. The 1960's was the height of the cold war. A massive dick measuring contest with Russia. People wanted to beat them and be the first to establish dominance at pretty much all costs with a nuclear world war on the horizon. Going "space" for the common goal of 300 something million people will not be anything close of a unifier as it was decades ago. For every one person that thinks it's cool and a great idea, another one will object and tell you that his priorities lies here on earth rather than on some different planet or solar body he'll never ever set foot on anyways.

Space more or less worked in the 60's because therer was an enemy with the same exact goal. Now, a vast majority will shrug it off when you try to frame it as a unifying goal.

Wow that's quite a lot of options, back when I binged on science/tech related news I din't have that many sites I visited. I'll test out each site for a week or so to see what sticks.

Thanks a million for the effortpost.
Don't worry about it. I'm not too interested in economics myself, but I understand its importance and try to stay as informed as I can. Personally, I stick with Reuters, The Financial Times,The Economist (used to even have a paper subscription to their actual magazine) and the (Belgian) Economic and Financial Times, and then check out the other ones if I stumble across something I want to know more about, but to each his own. Don't have all the time in the world, unfortunately.

3351
If it's not to much trouble, could you recommend some sites?
Generally speaking, a number of large news outlets have excellent economic and financial sections themselves.

Bloomberg, BBC News Business and Reuters Finance are genearlly top notch. While CNN is pretty iffy when it comes to politics, its Money and Finance subgroup is definitely decent. On news for markets and the stock exchange, Marketwatch, Seeking Alpha, Google Finance and Nasdaq News are all good.

And specifically for economic and finance news, the top ones are The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Insider, The International Business Times and Kiplinger. Note that some may have a paywall in place for some of their articles, but you can usually get around that pretty easily.

If you're looking for more of a blog, see this list of the 100 best economics blogs of 2016. Marginal Revolution, Free Exchange and CEPR are all high quality and reputable.

Honestly, the more I read about ZeroHedge, the less I'm liking them. While they bring some quality news every once in blue moon, they seem to have a pretty clear and political agenda, a history of plagiarism, stealing research, publishing it as their own and putting a different twist on it and other damning information against them. The whole "Tyler Durden" thing was supposed to give the impression that it's "everyone" writing their articles against the establishment, when in reality it's just 3 people behind the site. And one of them left earlier this year and went public with the message "I can’t be a 24-hour cheerleader for Hezbollah, Moscow, Tehran, Beijing, and Trump anymore. It’s wrong. Period. I know it gets you views now, but it will kill your brand over the long run. This isn’t a revolution. It’s a joke.

So while I'm sure they bring some good content every so often, I really don't see why I would read them over the dozens of other more reputable and better economic / finance news outlets. You're obviously free to see it differently, though.

Also, after reading through their site for a bit, it seems like a lot of their finance articles are very technical. As you said you're new to economics, much of what they write might go over your head until you become more familiar with how economics, stock exchange, markets and such work. I don't know what level you're at, but a lot of what they're talking about isn't exactly beginner stuff and requires some background knowledge to fully grasp it and critically assess what they're saying.

3352
That first sentence. Fucking hell, the hypocrisy is sickening.
The fact that they run stories on "who is the biggest pendler of fake news" right next to this is hilarious.

Seriously though, fuck sites like this. ZeroHedge is trash. First article I read from them was about how Hillary was swindling taxes and "doing the same thing Trump did" in which they apparently didn't even bother to read their own source because the very document they linked disproved their claim.
I usually only use ZH for economic news, and even then take it with a lot of skepticism since they have a habbit of doom-saying. Almost all of their articles are written under the Tyler Durden pseudonym so their content can vary wildly and there's no way to tell in advance who's writing what. There were times where you'd see pro-hillary articles next to pro-trump articles next to pro-johnson articles next to anti-everyone articles. So yeah, trash for politics and social news, but decent enough for economic stuff now and then.

Really, I just posted them since I hate having dailymail's formatting.
My post wasn't supposed to criticse you, just terrible media practices in general. Didn't mean to call you out or anything.

Regardless, I'm still not sure why you'd read a site like Zerohedge over the many better and more reputable economic and financial journals and newspapers available. I assume they might have some decent articles, but my past experiences with ZH have put it at the bottom of the pile in my eyes.

Honestly America does not need to remove the electoral College but needs electoral reform. Ditch the two party system and try to bring in more companies.

Forgivable mistake, seeing how much power lobbyists and corporations have in US politics.
