>tfw the update is almost half the space of the game itself.
And only just to be introduced to the killing factor of CoD being implanted in a Remaster intended to be "Kept as closest to the original as possible."
Yeah, screw this.
I took it back to Gamestop and put gas with the money lol
You guys actually turned the game back in because of the update?
I bought the game expecting to play a better looking version CoD4, not a CoD4 with the stupid shit from newer games. And the fact that Activision didn't even say that supply drops or melee weapons were gonna get added until the last second was where I drew the line. It's only a matter of time before you start seeing the Spetsnaz and Marines dancing at the end of matches like in Black Ops 3.
Can't believe I'm gonna say this but EA right now is doing way better than Activision and is actually listening to the fans. BF1 and Titanfall 2 here I come!
To each his own. I'm liking the update quite a bit. It's just cosmetics and a lot of them look pretty cool. The melee weapons require you to complete an entire specific collection, so they're rare and hard to come by (haven't seen a single person use them outside of gun game). They're also not very powerful and there's no real reason to be using them. The depot stuff is alright and just gives more of an incentive to play and unlock things. They kept the base challenge and unlock system the exact same so there's no changes there, and you get scrap with the better boxes as well as duplicates to unlock specific items rather than having to grind out the RNG in the hopes of getting something you really want. The patch also included some updates to improve the game and fix some bugs. Now that we have all the maps of the original (all looking pretty great) + game modes like Gun Game, it's a very fun game so far. Few complaints to be had and I'm not that opposed to them straying further from an identical copy of CoD 4. I'm getting everything I wanted out of the remaster.

So after all these years, even Sony itself admits that the Xbox controller is better and has the superior lay-out of thumbsticks and d-pad?
Brb gotta tell a lot of friends from high school.

This is dumb because: - it's based entirely around your own views on sexuality and its portrayal, which I think are pretty stupid and warp this entire discussion from the start. I think they affect your ability to look at this neutrally. - I never said it's not the responsibility of the parents to keep little Timmy from playing those games or that we shouldn't have some kind of rating system. - I never said violent games make children violent. - Citation needed on pretty much everything else. I don't think this picture was in any way appropriate for a child, but I'm not talking about this particular instance but rather the bigger picture. And no, I don't consider this common sense at all. The US is often very prude when compared to other countries and even when compared to one of the most sexually open countries in the world like France, it still sees 70% more rapes (accounting for population). You're so eager to dismiss any suggestion of kids being influenced by exposure to violence as patently ridiculous to the point that we even have to "get real" about it, but god forbid that little Timmy sees a nipple or vagina because it's almost "common fucking sense" that it might turn him into a sexual predator. Come on Verb, you can see how ridiculous that is and how your very negative views about sexuality might play a part in why you're seeing it this way. - Violence is not further from reality than sex is. Sure, Timmy isn't going to want to burn busses with people in them because of TV. But there's much more to violence than that. I don't see how watching a prostitute on the floor is a display of such REAL behavior damaging children while watching a character kick and punch someone is "so far beyond the pale of reality" that no child could ever dream of doing something as hitting someone. You could even argue that violence is even more life-like to little children than sex is, as they kick, push, rustle and get into fights with each other all the time as opposed to them being involved in sexual behavior. I fully agree with you that they're not the same thing and shouldn't be treated identically either. But you're acting as if we're talking about young children seeing hardcore pornography and it being a good or acceptable thing, because it's not. But this whole idea that children (and I'm not even just talking about preteens but also adolescents) seeing any nudity or sexuality at all is so harmful is just stupid and not accurate. I'm not saying it can't be bad either, but to pretend that it's all bad while gratuitous violence is all fun and games that couldn't possibly have negative effects on some? Come on Verb. That's just dumb.

If you're going to get banned for that
Why, as a developer, put this in a game, that's like getting banned for making a clip of the strip tease on metro
I imagine that the idea behind it is that it's fine to be in mature games (supposedly) played adults or older teens, but not everywhere else. If the PSN works like XBL, these pictures will be shared with and visible to anyone regardless of their age. Simply put, it's fine to have explicit sexuality in a game for older people, but not for them to take pictures of it and share them on an open platform where an 8 year old playing Lego games and Knack on his dad's PS4 can see it.
Take screenshot of burning bus with people in it in GTA 5 - share it - no one cares, A-Okay! Take screenshot of a human genital - OMG NOOO!!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Either ban all, or none at all. ffs
It's one of the big contradictions in the West and extremely so in the US. Exposing children to violence on shows and letting them play with actual guns is fine and dandy, but the moment a nipple makes an appearance on a show it's an outrage.

New leaked photo of Rouge One:
one of my favorite games

I did not immediately get this meme because I couldn't think of anyone misspelling this, but now that I've seen tons of people on Bungie.net spell it as Rouge, it's suddenly quite clear. Why is that? Is it like the "i comes before e" thing that you guys are taught and also results in people misspelling some words? Or just people who can't spell to save their lives?

Where is that from? To my knowledge things have improved after the attacks. Can't really compare one of the most powerful countries in the world of 60 million to one that's barely got more people living in it than the center of London alone. It's not an excuse, but the state structure is really quite fucked up. It's shameful and disappointing.

How is any of this shit spoilers when it was revealed back in like August?
Not everyone keeps up with the game's development and teasers. I'm just kidding and don't care though. It's a pokemon game. Random 10 year old moves to a new place and goes from town to town to collect badges (or their alternative) to beat the pokemon league while also being the only person in the world capable of stopping an incompetent group of bad guys trying to steal pokemon and use legendaries for the purpose of causing chaos, changing the world or whatever. I mean, pokemon is just the kind of game that I don't consider really spoilable.

Well I just got spoiled on who the leader of the evil team is
gr8
Is it a spoiler if it was officially revealed months ago?
I mean it was pretty obvious Aether were the bad guys but I didn't remember seeing it said that Lusamine was the boss.
Bleh
Well that's all I know, Lusamine is the bad boss. I literally scrolled past a post that said 'Can we talk about Lusamine? She is the first female boss of a villain team...'
I was like fuq
Damn, now it's spoiled for me too.

i did it last semester for my medieval popular religion term paper. i took an old high school paper about christian musical traditions copy-edited it and expanded it into a paper contrasting sacred music with the musical traditions of the laity.
i see nothing wrong with it.
I agree with you in this case, because it's not as if you can even really cite a high school paper and no one really cares either because it's so unimportant. I'm talking more about college (publications) and academics in general.

The only issue I have with it is that the student would essentially be receiving double credit for one paper, which is bad. That's not "plagiarism"--that's academic dishonesty. Plagiarism involves at least two parties--you cannot plagiarize yourself, and the very idea kinda makes me chuckle. So too does the notion of giving yourself "due credit." C'mon now.
It's a poorly chosen and oxymoronic term, but I think it's a completely valid concept. Funding, copyright, publishing agreements, provenance, accountability, ethics, inflation of publication count, pollution of literature with redundancies and so on are just some of the reasons it's a bad practice. It's a misnomer, but part of academic fraud and dishonesty. So yeah, you should give due credit. Not for yourself, but others.

« on: December 14, 2016, 03:34:37 AM »
So I ended up in a discussion with people on B.net (which I know I shouldn't) on the topic of self-plagiarism, being the reuse of substantial parts of your previous work without giving due credit. At first glance, it seems that pretty much everyone on there thinks it's ridiculous and stupid, while I think it's an important part of academia and the ethics of writing. The discussion was spurred by some kid resubmitting an identical paper for a class and getting in trouble for it.
Opinions?

Just gonna go ahead and say two more things to elaborate on what I said earlier. I'm not the biggest fan of hate speech laws myself, but I do agree with the ruling here. Wilders was not convicted for incitement of hatred or violence, but for inciting discrimination and attacking a group. The main reason he was convicted lies in the indiscriminate and general nature of his statements. I don't know how much of the events leading up to this you are all familiar with, but this didn't have anything to do with Islam, illegal immigrants or people promoting violence or barbaric values. This concerned a group of people who were targeted not because of their own choice or what they believe or do, but entirely because of their ethnicity. Trump, for example, made some controversial statements himself, but he was careful enough not to do this. He always focused on the "illegal" ones. Wilders, on the other hand, said he would get rid of Morrocans. He led a chant of "less, less, less Morrocans" and said that he would have it arranged. I imagine you might not know this, but Morrocans are a major group in The Netherlands. As was the case with many European countries, they were invited as guest workers in the decades following the second world war to help rebuild. The vast majority of them are not illegal immigrants, or even really immigrants. These people are well integrated and have lived there for generations. Many of them are about as Dutch as the next guy. And then, you have one of the most prominent politicians leading a large crowd in a chant that he'll get rid of them. There's lots of stories and testimonials of Morrocans who might not even have visited Morroco, grew up in the Netherlands and have fully Western values, who now feel personally attacked. And I think that if you'd put yourself in their position, most of us would feel the same. This is like the American president saying "I'm going to rid this country of all these Mexicans". Not the illegal, violent or non-integrated kind. But all of the people from a Mexican background. Or hell, even all Irish Americans for that matter. Can you imagine being a full and legal part of a society and considering yourself just as much (if not more so) American than Irish or Mexican, and then seeing powerful politicians lead crowds with a rhetoric of "You are unwanted, your kind is unwelcome, and I am going to kick you out of here". I think it would be awful and political speech or not, I think it is clearly discriminatory and aggressive towards a minority group. And that is why I think Wilders' conviction is understandable. You're a smart guy Flee, no doubt, but you have this tendency to view political issues from a really narrow prism.
Why do you think that? I like to think I come from a pretty varied background and am decently capable of viewing things from multiple angles. Gotta admit that it's probably skewed on here because being extremely nuanced and holding back on a forum is pretty boring, but still. I'm curious to hear what narrow prism it is I'm looking through. I try to be pretty neutral on most things and call out bullshit wherever I see it.

I said his conviction was deserved and that the judgment was sound. Whether he should've been prosecuted and tried is something else entirely. The fact that it's a political speech doesn't matter either, as it was held outside of parliament. How exactly is it "a correct application of the law" to convict someone and not even bother following through with anything? Just seems like a tremendous waste of time which will only end up drawing attention to a non issue and a clearly undesirable candidate. The last thing this guy needs is a victim status for his supporters and the disenfranchised.
You're a smart guy Flee, no doubt, but you have this tendency to view political issues from a really narrow prism. Have you not learned anything from Brexit and Trump? I warned you about the invigoration of the far right from this kind of apologetic rhetoric about a year ago and you tacitly laughed it off, so don't act surprised when far right populism continues to infect your beloved EU.
That's not really true. Wilders gained 7 seats during the 4 weeks before his trial with 2 more following the week of his conviction. He's been gaining popularity steadily over the past few months and this is entirely in line with his recent surge in popularity. Not at all "dramatically risen" compared to what happened before, despite what certain headlines might have you believe. "The polls" are also a single online poll which is pretty notorious in the Benelux for its inaccuracy. According to Maurice de Hond and IPSOS his party now leads 10 seats after his conviction. Not really sure what "online polls" you're referring to which you deem unreliable, but the ones I've been looking into corroborate with my statement.
Gotta be quick because I have to leave in just a minute, but: A symbolic conviction can be sufficient, as the court deemed here. It's part of why I think it's not a bad judgement. It's an acknowledgement that he broke the law but that he should remain free and unpunished for speaking his mind. I don't think he should've been tried in the first place and know this can backfire, but the court made the right call and hopefully managed to mitigate backlash by not convicting him. I know this may sound strange to non-lawyers, but it's often the pointless cases that end up going all the way to bring clarity and/or reform. Sometimes it ends up being a waste of resource, other times it doesn't. I don't think I ever laughed this off, though. But yeah, it's gona a lot farther than I could've feared. I have been genuinely concerned with the direction we're heading in for a while now. I just don't think anyone knows how to do anything about it. Their voices should be heard and they should not be silenced (hence it being a good thing Wilders was not actually sentenced to anything), but it is a dangerous direction we're heading in. Advice is always welcome, even though there's nothing I personally can do. As for the polls, the latest I'm seeing from IPSOS NL predates the conviction and shows what I said earlier, being that Wilders has been rising regardless. And Maurice De Hond is the one I'm talking about. I have to admit that I'm not too familiar with it, but it's apparently one guy naming an unofficial and non-recognized institute after himself. The De Hond poll is held online and allows anyone to register and vote (even multiple times on different accounts). While it does only pick people it deems representative for its surveys, I remember seeing it on a talkshow and facing some criticism. Especially now with Wilders, I can see it being pretty inaccurate. Wilders is kind of like Trump and might be heavily overrepresented in online surveys due to his support among younger tech savvy (alt right) people, while traditional and older voters probably stay away from going through the registration and survey proces online. It's also been criticized in books and such. Maybe I'm wrong and they've improved a lot, but my Dutch friend told me it's not valued highly in the Netherlands. Then again, traditional polls have proven very inaccurate with Brexit and Trump either way and I can see this adding to his popularity.

The outrage seems a little pointless. It was a stupid thing to do and he should've never picked up that gun as a journalist, but I don't see the likes of ISIS giving the slighest shit about any of this. Terrorist groups have been killing or keeping hostage journalists for years. The actions of one random person won't make much of a difference and I really don't see much of a reason to make plausible that it would.
If anything, this whole ordeal is only making it worse and is in a way shameful on the side of the people and journalists attacking him. Terrorist groups and militias are not painstakingly following all reporters from every Western source out there (especially not some random nobody from The Blaze getting an average of 7 retweets on anything he posts) in the hopes of finding a reason to attack people like him. This would've died a quick and painless death with not a single terrorist or fighter in the Middle East ever seeing this. Instead, this is now being covered by dozens of news outlets, going viral and being smeared on who knows how many networks, social media accounts and sites. If this were to lead to retaliations against journalists, it would be caused in part by the people blowing it up in public and potentially drawing attention to something that would've otherwise gone under everyone's radar.

You really think valuable legal resources should be spent on a political speech, however distasteful it may be? I said his conviction was deserved and that the judgment was sound. Whether he should've been prosecuted and tried is something else entirely. The fact that it's a political speech doesn't matter either, as it was held outside of parliament. Just a little addendum here, Wilders has risen dramatically in the polls since his conviction. Seeing as how you're such a prominent critic of populism, perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to excuse the forces that are patently galvanizing it.
I'm not excusing anything. I don't even think this should've gone to trial and see that it might end up boosting his popularity in the end. But the judgment was sound and a proper application of the law. Wilders deserved his conviction.

Well... the game was fun while it lasted. Raven Software said that they "wanted it close to the original as possible" Haha yeah right. This is the last Call of Duty I buy. I'm fucking done.
RIP CoD4 Remastered November 4, 2016 - December 13, 2016

Is this actually true???
Yup. Activision and Raven can eat shit.
We should have honestly seen this coming, tbh.
Am I the only one not too bothered by this? These aren't new weapons, perks, killstreaks or overhauls of how the game plays. No double jumping, wallrunning, jetpacking, supply drops or so on. It's just more customisation and cosmetics, it seems. The weapon kits are cause for concern, but I'm reserving judgment until release. Also, I'm also kinda happy with this. It's nice to see that they do intend to actually maintain MWR instead of just slapping it onto the package to get people to buy IW.
Except they're going to add supply drops though. Some people data mined the game and they found a dealer similar to the one in Black Ops 3.
They need to focus on improving the game like fixing the spawns and reducing the weapon flinch when being shot at instead of adding the bullshit that people have been getting annoyed by in newer CoDs like super colorful and gay ass camos, melee weapons, and supply drops.
When you remaster a game, you don't add stuff that wasn't in the original in the first place to change things. All you do is make the game look better and run better.
Wouldn't be the first time there's a lot of cut content left in a CoD game's code though. But yeah, random drops could be bad and that is pretty worrying. Still, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. I don't think a remaster can't be anything more than a better looking and running clone of the original. CoD 4 is still a great game, but its age is showing. I don't want a gameplay overhaul, but I don't think that some new skins, animations, challenges, customization options, gametypes and such are necessarily detrimental to the game.
