And kind of related, Reflex released today.

A great Quake-inspired Arena FPS. Might play it in the near future although I'm not the biggest fan of CPM movement.

What is your favorite:

- Experience / area in Dark Souls.
- Alcholic beverage (you don't drink, but if you had to pick one based on any criteria such as name, color, smell, design, production process...).
- Pony from Hasbro's popular animated fantasy television series "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic".

I already did, what's your opinion on the armor shards that are dropped when you kill someone ?
Same thing as with the Champions. I think it's pointless and don't see it being necessary, but I have little to no doubts that they're going to allow major tweaking of server and user settings. Competitive Quake is what made the game so popular, so I couldn't imagine them not having "Classic" mode without abilities, wall jumps and these shard drops.

So they're not for me, but I'm not entirely against it either. One of Quake's biggest issues was accessibility. The game still has one of the highest skill ceilings and best competitive side of any game I've ever played or watched. We're almost 20 years after Quake 3's release and the game still has an active competitive scene focused entirely around movement and getting from point A to point B as fast as possible. At the point that I was already a serious player / veteran, I still ended up putting in hours and hours just to get a single jump down, which is pretty damn crazy for any game.

And while this gave the games tremendous longevity and competitive potential, it also made it very daunting and inaccessible for newcomers. You start playing and find yourself in a lightning fast and highly tactical game that requires hours of practice just to reach the level of "novice" at something as simple as basic movement. Add onto that item timing, map control, weapon utilization, trick jumps and so forth, and you'll have a mediocre player who is somewhat familiar with the game stomp on a beginner 40-0. There's no low level. You either play with bots by yourself or get slaughtered in public by real people until you get decent enough. It's Dark Souls' git gud but a hundred times worse.

This is very off putting and turned a lot of people away because of how difficult and "hardcore" the games were. And ultimately, that's what kills a game and limits the playerbase to a dwindling number of good and amazing players who end up moving on to other games that have come out since Quake. So in that sense, I'm not against these new features. As long as they keep them out of hardcore or classic modes, I think they can do much to level the playing field and make it easier for new players to enjoy and stick with the game.

It's also not illegal to pirate software, believe it or not.

It's illegal to distribute cracked intellectual property, so as long as you don't seed after you torrent, you're not breaking any laws.
i'm aware of this

that doesn't mean i approve of piracy, or that i don't think it should be outlawed
Wait, what? To both of you.
i don't actually believe him, i'm just playing along because he's solonoid and lives in his own world

i'm not a law expert, i just have principles
Yeah, Google confirmed what I expected. Copyright and many other forms of intellectual property are regulated at the international level by WIPO or UN treaties. National law varies on certain things, but most of it is similar all over the world. The US is no exception there. When you download copyrighted material you are considered as making a copy or reproduction of that software / song / book / / movie whatever, which it is very much illegal. You're unlikely to get in trouble over it as long as you don't upload or distribute it yourself, but it's still against the law to download pirated software.

Beta Signup

Still unsure about the addition of different champions with their own abilities, but I'm sure that'll be disabled in competitive modes. Game looks great aside from that. So go sign up for the Beta.

Yes in the US only the distribution is illegal.
I'm no expert on American law, but I find that very hard to believe. Distribution might be what gets you caught, but that doesn't make downloading any less illegal.

Serious / Dutch Elections
« on: March 06, 2017, 11:56:39 AM »
Any predictions? Recent polls are favoring Wilders less as other parties are gaining, but we all know how reliable they can be.

For example, the Green Party is coming on quite strong while the current leading party has again toppled the PVV in polls.

Let's hope they don't vote for the terrible candidate that is Wilders so that my joking disdain for the Dutch doesn't become any more real.

1998 Godzilla best Godzilla.
If I say that design is the best looking one, would I get bitched out of this form? I remember in a gaming thread I made a comment about me using Steam workshop for mods and about half of this sites population was bitching at me for using it.
They're just in denial.

He's Dutch. They don't even count.

This thread is confusing me. Is it supposed to be a universally rolled r, or are we talking about how well we can say the Dutch pronunciation? I have no trouble rolling them but everybody I've talked to pronounces it essentially the same as saying Tangerine.
It was about the Dutch pronunciation but then turned into a discussion on rolling R's.

The Flood / Re: American and British folk

I don't think anyone actually has trouble rolling r's I think we just don't pronounce things that way because it's absent in our common dialect. Any time we wanna make fun of Mexicans we can do it perfectly.
Nah man, I legit know several native English speakers who can't roll their R at all. Verb is confirming it too.
I can't do it either. My grandma tried to teach me, but it just doesn't happen.

There must be some people in Belgium who can't do it either. No way its a linguistic thing.
I don't know, but I've never met anyone who couldn't. Haven't found anything on Google to suggest that there's people who are physically incapable of doing it either, unless they have a speech impediment or something like it. There's exercises out there to improve your trill / rolling R, but it's something that's apparently hard to learn for many who don't have the sound in their native language.

It's been almost 5 years and I still can't get enough of '117'
The only good song in Halo 4
"Halo" 4 had a soundtrack?
I do recall only hearing that track 117. For the majority of the game I only heard obnoxious mechanical sounds which I assumed was the sound of Prometheans farting into a mic and someone at 343 playing around with the editing software
don't forget the warthog's chainsaw engine
You're all crazy. Halo 4 had some great tracks too. Arrival was better and more memorable than 117.

It's just expected that all the games look good nowadays, nothing wows me. Does anyone else feel the same way?
Not at all. I too expect games to look good these games and know the improvements we're making now are smaller than they were 10 years ago, but I'm still constantly impressed by how great or realistic some games look.

I don't think it's necessary for there to be (big) improvements to be wowed by graphics.

Gaming / Re: I don't feel impressed by graphics anymore.

I've felt that way since I started gaming, yeah. Basically what Ushan said--visual style > # of polygons.
To be fair, it's entirely possible to not care about graphics at all and still be impressed by them. Quake 3 and Live are some of my favorite and most played games of all time. The graphics look like shit, partially because serious players turn them all the way down and tweak settings for the highest possible player and system performance, so I'll be the last person to care about graphics. But even then, I can still be impressed and amazed by great looking games. I'm playing through Far Cry Primal right now and I regularly stop to just look around because of how beautiful it all looks.
