The Flood / Re: Thinking about buying a gun
« on: April 26, 2017, 02:54:05 PM »
Just to live up to my reputation as an anti I seem to have acquired, you should take note that there's heaps of researching pointing towards having a gun in the house being a strong risk factor for a whole lot of stuff. You (or anyone else in the house) is a whole lot more likely to end up injured, shot or killed than you are to fend off an invader. There's strong links between gun ownership and suicide, escalating partner violence, fatal accidents in the household and so. The odds of you being killed in a home invasion are nearly astronomically small, while having a gun puts you and your family at a much higher risk.

As a quote from this article: "Everyone likes to pretend that he or she is more rational, more responsible, and more immune to the risks that gun ownership poses relative to the average American. Yet, we know from gun violence statistics that many are simply misjudging their own competency. Everyone thinks he or she is above average, but half are mistaken."

Not looking to convince you otherwise, but you should be aware of the risks and what the science has to say.
Statistics on "accidents" are great but when your home is being invaded by 3 thugs and you'll wish you had a fully loaded pistol instead of waiting until the police arrive.

I could post news articles on people who have defended their home or themselves, but there's no point. It's not about what other people do, it's about what you do. OP was in the army after all.
Sure, but I thought I made it pretty clear I'm not trying to stop him from buying a gun. The point is just that everybody thinks they're more responsible than the average person and yet over 100,000 people are shot or die by guns every year in the US. For every news story of someone defending their family from homicidal home invaders, there's 10 of impulsive suicides, kids shooting themselves with their parents' gun or arguments devolving into shots fired. If Charlie feels that buying a gun is the best thing to do, he should. I just don't want him to do so without knowing that no matter how responsible you think you are, it's statistically much more likely for your gun to negatively affect you and your family than it is to fend off invading thugs.
He knows the risks. He was in the army. I'm sure he can handle a firearm and take proper care of it.
All the better then.

There's strong links between gun ownership and suicide,

bruh isn't that like saying there's a connection between automobile ownership and traffic fatalities?
Nah, that'd be more like saying there's a connection between gun ownership and firearm related injury / death. Suicide is still a step removed. But yeah, it does sound pretty obvious. I just included it since plenty of people are fan of the "well it would have happened anyways" argument despite the research being pretty clear on firearm presence being a significant risk factor for these things.

He didn't imply doing yoga was racist or anything so I'm not sure what you're on about. Incorporating Buddhas and om symbols is just a marketing tactic, if a stupid one, because anyone with a brain is going to realise your full of shit when your house is filled with conflicting religion's holy symbols.
Yeah but white people should stop doing yoga

Utterly irrelevant. This is about the content of this video.
That article is so clearly satirical.

What would I watch if I wanted to continue after the Buu saga?

the battle of gods movie and return of F

don't watch the super anime, just read the manga
Why not watch it?

i can repost the image if you want, but basically toei has really fucked with it and made it stray far away from what toriyama envisioned. like the base story is still the same, but the power scaling is fucked and there are a bunch of plot holes and other inconsistencies due to toei just not giving a fuck. also there's been a bunch of character degradation, the most notable of which is goku who's gone from a pure hearted man to literal retard in the anime.
Fair enough. I just have zero interest in reading Manga and don't care much about the finer aspects of DBZ.

This game man. All I want are the McCree and Genji event skins. I've received 3 legendaries recently and they've been currency x2 and then a Roadhog one I won't use.
Go to your bathroom at 3am, turn the lights off, look in the mirror, scream "HANZO IS FUCKING TRASH!" at the top of your lungs, and Jeff will appear and give you all the Legendary skins.
I tried it last night. Opened one lootbox today. A legendary duplicate of the single fucking Torbjorn skin I have. Fucking hell.

The reason for watching the movies is because the first two arcs of Super are retellings
So episode 3-13 and 19-27 you mean?

I used to watch DBZ as a kid but never saw the end of the series. Now I'm close to finishing the Buu saga. What do I watch next? Reading through this thread I've seen a lot of mentions of movies and different arcs and I wouldn't know where to start.

MUMMY STEPS DOWN AS FN LEADER
So what does this mean exactly? I'm not well versed in parliamentary things.
Nothing. I'm not sure if she completely left her party or just is no longer the president of it. If it's the first she's technically running as an independent now. If it's the latter literally nothing changes. In the end, this is just a publicity move to get some votes. Hopefully the French are smart enough to see through how cheap of a trick this is. Her party, FN, was notorious having a lot of racist and anti-semitic undertones in the past. The founder and long time leader (her father) is pretty well known for saying there's too many blacks in French sport teams, questioning parts of the holocaust and referring to gas chambers as "a detail" among heaps of other similar things. The party itself is the neo-nazi's group of choice and makes it into the news very regularly as many of its members cause controversy with racist, homophobic and anti-semitic statements. There's plenty written about the party's generally terrible views on a wide array of things.

Marine has for a few years been trying to change public opinion on this and have the party seen as more moderate. Many people believe that she's really no better than her father, but that she just does a much better job at being subtle and not openly saying the things he did. Her resignation is probably little more than an attempt to win over undecided voters whose candidate didn't make it through the first round. She's distancing herself from FN in the hopes that people will just listen to her anti-immigration talking points and forget about the history of the party.

If Macron wins he better do something to to empower police and not say stupid shit like "Terrorism is just a fact of life we have to live with" or there will be a legitimate Far-Right reaction in the next election.
He's pledged to hire at least 10,000 more police agents and increase their funding, I believe.

Partial results giving a lead to Le Pen over Macron, although this excludes the cities.
Looking good so far. 92% of all votes counted and Macron is leading by around a million votes (2.2% and rising). Considering that FN has actually lost votes compared to last regionals, and that Fillon (the number 3 who only lost to Le Pen by 500k votes) called on his supporters to support Macron, things are looking up.

is it such a big deal to change it to something like "spanish" or "french"--something that they're not fucking speaking?
Yes, because they're Japanese and it's only getting a dub in the language, not the culture. The last time Persona tried to replace that shit for Western audiences was Persona 1, and it's retarded.

Trying to mask it as them not being in Japan and not speaking Japanese is stupid. It's merely dubbed so you can understand it, but the culture and writing is still going to be the same. It's like when Japanese things are dubbed over American things. The 90's is over with shitty and disrespectful translations.
To be fair, you can just change those few words without doing a cultural overhaul too. Dora the Explorer, for example, teaches children English here without anything else being changed. Not saying it's better, but you can change stuff like that without a full overhaul.

Verb chill, it's just a prank :^)

This is why you should be an anti-natalist.
The year is 2055. Verb is an decrepit and miserable man struck by GMO-induced disease. As he lays on his deathbed surrounded by his loved ones, he contemplates his existence this one last time. "Life is suffering", he murmurs, as the room falls silent. "Procreation is, in itself, immoral and unjustifiable. If only I had never been born." He sighs deeply and closes his eyes, struggling to find the will to wrench them open once more. Then, a noise. Barely audible at first, like a summer breeze fluttering over a lake, but rapidly growing louder. It's a shuffling, Verb realizes. And a heavy, troubled heaving. Squinting against the bright fluorescent light, he makes out the silhouette of an old, troubled man. It is his father. With a deep sigh, he leans over. "My son", he whispers, "I have a confession to make."

"It was all a prank. Your life, suffering and intermittent happiness? A joke, all of it." Verb literally starts to shake. "Bro it's just a prank. Chill! It's just a prank man", his father exclaims. An air horn goes off. The room applauds and bursts out into laughter. Countless hands pat Verb's back as laughing faces fill his vision. "JUST A PRANK MAN" is heard to be made out among the thunderous laughter. As Verb shuts his eyes for the final time and drifts off into the black nothing, a flash goes off. A last picture of his face, comically adorned with a snapchat dog filter, is uploaded to instragram. "#ANTI-NATALIST PRANK (60 years in the making) GONE WRONG IN THE HOOD GONE SEXUAL" reads the caption. Another successful joke for the ages.

Like I said, I'm sure it's a solid, massive and unique game made by a very talented team. It just isn't for me. This is like music and art. You can appreciate the skill, ideas and mechanics behind a song or art piece, but still think it sounds or looks terrible. I can see why other people would love the game and why it's gotten such good review scores, but almost everything about it is so off-putting that it just really isn't for me. I'm not here to bash the game and hope that it meets all of your expectations. Just not my cup of tea.

and the brooding edgy high school protagonist.

Bruh I can totally understand and accept why you wouldn't want to play it with everything you said EXCEPT this. Even Persona 3 where the blue haired emo-looking slouching MC who blows his brains out to summon his Persona isn't "brooding" or "Edgy" and he's miles closer to that than P5's MC.
Fair enough, I could well be wrong here. I just based this on the gameplay I've seen as well as the review linked in this thread and the GameRanx "before you buy" video. It just seemed like the somewhat condescending, edgy, outcast kid peering over his glasses (that obviously had this anime white light effect going on) standing broodingly at the edge of the group.
Quote
blank slates for you to paint your personality onto, that's why you also get to name them; which makes the anime tropes and cliches even greater because when you have Yukiko (best girl) going all blushing cute anime girl saying "Oh Jamal-kun!!" it's fucking hilarious.

Why am I back to full weeb for watching Hunter x Hunter
for watching Hunter x Hunter + long history with the anime/manga scourge

but as i said to oss, don't take this tongue-in-cheek thing too serious pls
Considering Hiatus x Hiatus gets like an average of two chapters a year, I don't think it fully qualifies me as a weeb

Half weeb at best, considering I'm only half committed to weebish tendencies
You unironically have an anime as your profile picture. That alone should be enough for full weeb.

What draws you away and why?
It's extremely Japanese.
Well no shit.

It takes place in Japan.
But that's why Flee's not interested.
Sounds a bit racist tbh

It's not weeb Japanese anime tier stuff if that's what you're wondering.
It's not all racist to dislike cultural elements. And I don't just dislike this because it's Japanese. There's several games I like (most notably Dark Souls) that are made by Japanese developers and have some Japanese themes in them. It's just that there's things I don't like and much of Japanese media just so happens to embody a whole lot of them.

But to be more specific, I don't like the tropes. I don't like the clear anime-inspired art style and the brooding edgy high school protagonist. I'm not a fan of the massive over the top flashy pop-art menus covering unnecessarily large amounts of the screen. I dislike the flying talking anime cat or whatever it is that follows you around like Clippy the microsoft paperclip. The turn-based combat seems boring with drawn-out animations that'll get old after seeing them twice. The texting your friends and interacting with anime characters for high school drama looks so meaningless. The hyper sexualized everything because >Japan. All of the mini-games and borderline irrelevant stuff like going to restaurants together just comes across as so pointless. The intro of all the people spinning around actually makes me cringe. The literal anime scenes and cutscenes. The setting on its own and the typical anime tropes everywhere all the time, ugh.

I don't want to come across as bashing some game in a thread made for it and I see how it could be a great game for people with a different taste. But to me, there is literally nothing about this game that seems appealing to me.

I think your post is quite a lot of filler with little in it that actually demonstrates the two main arguments you're trying to make.
