The Flood / Re: Lol remember that bullshit Tidal streaming service ad
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:01:35 AM »
They're talking about it like it's some kind of revolution while sitting around in nice clothes sipping wine while telling you to spend more money on their music
As bullshit of an ad as it is, Tidal did do some pretty interesting stuff. I've never used it myself, but it had some features that some might appreciate because it was "run by the artists themselves". Rather than just have music, it also had a lot of bonus content from the artists themselves (behind the scenes, extra footage / recordings, different and exclusive versions of songs, announcements...). It offers the highest tier audio quality of any streaming service, hosts music videos, lets you livestream concerts and interviews with the musicians, participate in contests to win tickets and all sorts of stuff like that. Big names like Coldplay and Daft Punk do editorials on there, put together their own personal playlists for others to join in on, and host exclusive music on there.

The idea behind the service is actually really not that bad, but I don't care much about all the extra shite. Not worth it for most, but it's not that bad if you're one of those people who really cares about what's hip in pop music today.

Where do I find good teammates to play with? Just had a game with a guy calling himself a "DPS battle Mercy" who only used his pistol and damage boost without healing.

Edit: lucky me got put with him on my team the game right after too.

The placement matches system is so trash. 3 out of my 10 had leavers on my team, 2 a thower / griefer who put teleporters near the edge as symmetra or just did dances in the middle of the map. I got 5 golds as Road for the first time in Competitive for my last game, which we still lost, and now my starting rank is 2800. Pretty damn discouraging when you consistently play at 3500+.
Add me on PC fleeeeeeee

I will admit to some moderate salt as the trend continues. First game after placement matches. Dude says he'll give Sombra a try. Turns out he has played literally 0 minutes of Sombra, both in competitive and quickplay. Does absolutely nothing for a few minutes, switches to Genji, dies and leaves.

This makes me want to get in on PC too. I feel like I would be really quite good at it.
what i dig the most about it is how it emphasizes finesse and relatively high APM gameplay, which tends to be on the lower end with your typical generic shooters

the weapons are neat too
If you like the finesse and high APM, Quake is the shit. I have Titanfall 2 on Xbox but would like to give it a go without the limitations of a controller.

Honestly, having read your more fleshed-out list of desires it seems to me that you're going to have to sacrifice a little sound quality or move your price range up to the €350 area.
Well yeah, you've gotta compromise somewhere if you're not looking to pay top dollar. Audio quality matters to me, but I'm not that big of an audiophile. Even at my home setup I don't have a special DAC or amp for my headphones. I'll be using these pretty much exclusively with my smartphone for travel, on the go purposes (cycling and such) and at work, so it's clear that I'm not going to get the absolute best that headphones twice the price can offer. To my knowledge, the consensus is also that the difference between high level and supreme audio quality is something that is pretty much missed unless you're actually focusing on the music entirely, which I really won't do with these. €200 is probably as much as I want to spend on this and these seem to have everything that I'm looking for.

Quote
The Sennheiser 4.00 series is just an reskin of the old 400 series.
All of the core components remain unchanged.
They tossed a few new features in and upped the quality of construction for the casing, but are still bound to the limitations the 400 series experienced, which very quickly drove the price of every product in the series down from €150-200 range to around €55-70, then into complete discontinuation.
Do you have anything to show that this is the same with the 4.00 series? I've been looking at a lot of reviews and am hearing nothing of the sorts.

"The bass is full and punchy, the mids and high frequencies come through beautifully. It has superior sound over any other similarly priced Bluetooth noise-cancelling headphone."
"Great, clear and accurate audio."
"A warm clear sound with crisp highs and punchy bass that's adequate but never overpowers. Their performance is nearly on par with QC35 Bose cans."
"Incredible sound."
"Very high quality and well balanced sound."
"Great, accurate sound that is rich and clean with nice, deep base."
"Warming and welcome sound, which is better than most of the headphones in the competition, and nothing but flawless music reproduction. Crisp highs and the humming elimination ensure a great musical experience."
"You’ll be hard pressed to find a wireless headphone with this kind of sound for the price."
"Great sound, intense bass and a full range frequency response."
"We found the overall sound output to be brilliant, regardless of the music we played."

Some reviews even mention that the new specific drivers make it better than previous models, that it's notably better than the HD 400 series and even the 4.30's, for example and that the noise cancellation adds a lot to the audio. Haven't heard anything actually bad about them other than one review saying that noise cancelling flattens the highs of some songs when played at max volume.

Quote
But they likely won't work well with lower end cell phones, are usually built mainly for use with apple products, and on a PC may deliver sound anywhere from thin and tinny, to unreasonably burly and without nuance.
Not that I doubt you, but do you have something to prove that? Most of what I'm reading says it works great with Android and even has its own specific app to fine tune and create custom profiles per phone. There's even specific customer reviews of people using with my exact phone (One Plus 3T) saying it works brilliantly.

Quote
I just really, really, really don't think it's going to be as good of a product in the long run as it might seem to be in the store.
Fair enough, but I'm just not seeing all that many downsides. I'm not looking for the best in audiophile sound, nor am I looking for the greatest noise cancelling headphones out there. I want something to use with my phone or work laptop that is portable, durable and affordable with noise cancelling I can turn on or off, a mic to take calls, the option to go wired if need be, on-the-go audio controls and decent customizability through software. If I really want to get the most out of my music, I've got the HD 598's at home. These just need to be great, not amazing, so I can wear them on the go. They check all the boxes and nothing else really seems to do the same at this price.

The two people I know that have them are also big fans. One of them is the biggest audiophile I know (law professor who has an insane setup at home) who had them with him at a recent convention we were both at and fully recommended them to me as the most versatile and high quality ones available at their price point. You clearly know more about this than I do, but I'm not convinced they'd be a bad purchase at all.

Saw it last night. Pretty good movie for what it was. The one scene that'll stick with me for sure is the medbay one on the lander. Top not scene that rivals the tension created by the original Alien movies.

If you're not completely serious about changing the way you listen to music forever
Yeah, I'm not at all. Music is fun for me but not something I am particularly dedicated to. I listen to it doing stuff around the house, on my way to work and while I'm doing research or writing. Still, I like to think my setup is decent for a passing interest. Got Sennheiser PC 360 Pro's for my gaming, HD 598's for home listening and then their momentum in-ears for outdoor use. Now I'm just looking for something good and wireless with nice features and noise cancellation for traveling. At €195, the HD 4.50's seem like an amazing deal for me. Not the best there is, sure, but this kind of performance and features coming in at half the price of the top tier models from Sony, Bose and Sennheiser itself? Got some great reviews everywhere I look and seemed top notch when I got some hands on time in Berlin too.

So in Recap, my recommendations are:
•Bose qc25 - quietness
•Sennheiser HD558 - sound quality
•Earin - portability
•v4ink Teana - runner up in portability, but easier to use than Earin
•Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless - excels in all categories, but also most expensive
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate the detail you put into this. My response would be that:

The qc25 feel very cheap to me, sound quite poor without noise cancellation, only have music/call control with the cable plugged in and are quite a bit more expensive.

I already have Sennheiser's 598's and they provide (to my knowledge) better sound quality than the 558's. Neither of them are very portable though, and that's what I'm going for now.

Looking for headphones rather than earbuds this time around. The Earin ones look pretty neat, but they lack connectivity as you said. I need to be able to go wired as well and use them with, for example, the TV's on planes or other devices (laptop/TV) that don't have Bluetooth. Never heard of the Teana's before. They look decent too, but again lack some features I want.

And the Momentum 2.0's are too much for me to spend on this.

I've been looking around and haven't seen anything that beats the ones I'm looking at now. I'm seeing nothing but great reviews and they meet all my requirements at a very attractive price. I want headphones that let me noise cancel when necessary (I travel a lot for work these days) but also turn the feature off otherwise (to wear in public / on a bike to stay aware of traffic). I want them to be durable, portable and provide great audio quality. They need to be wireless but with the option of going wired and connecting to any standard 3.5 mm jack, and they need to let me take calls, change volume and change between songs on the fly. And at €195, I don't think I'll find any better.

Active noise cancelling is weird as fuck to me.

That's all I got.
How so? Seemed great from when I got to try it. The ability to turn it on for when you're on a plane or a loud environment and then off again if you're out in public or around people and want to be situationally aware is amazing.
