Serious / Re: What Should the US Drinking Age Be?
« on: September 21, 2014, 06:40:10 PM »
It should depend on the drink. Over here, light beers can be bought and consumed at 16. Liquors and heavy beers at 18.

I personally feel that it should be 17-18, or 18 flat.

Serious / Re: Why do we gaol people who commit victimless crimes?
« on: September 21, 2014, 06:34:08 PM »
My question is "what victimless crime could possibly warrant a prison sentence?". Prisons are horrible places; essentially de facto insane asylums.
I don't know. It all depends on to what extent you can hold a person responsbie for secondary crimes or consequences.

I'm merely giving some of the popular arguments in support of victimless crimes. Not saying I necessarily agree with them.

Serious / Re: Why do we gaol people who commit victimless crimes?

I assume this is just about why victimless acts are illegal in general?
To a degree.

I can understand fining or slapping community sentences on people who do things from littering to dealing drugs. I'm more concerned with stealing the liberty of those who do no direct harm to others, rather than the overall illegality of such acts.
There's several reasons for the illegality of victimless crimes. Why imprisonment is the chosen punishment for some has to do with the determined severity of the crime.

The main reason of banning victimless crime is to deter what's known as secondary crime. Using drugs seems fine on its own, but it needs to be obtained which in turn creates a market for it and encourages people to grow, smuggle and deal it. Same argument could be made for watching child pornography, buying stolen goods and others.

Another popular reason is the idea that to some actions, people simply can't agree. This lack of consent makes it immoral and illegal, such as people consenting to prostitution, being murdered or somehow mutilated.

Finally, there's the interest of society and the issues with determining what exactly is victimless, such as attempted crimes.

Because it is the most primary way we deal with most types of crime?
I can't tell if you missed the tone of the thread, or if you're just being facetious.
The second one to get a response out of you, although I wasn't completely sure. You seemed to clearly insist on the imprisonment aspect in your OP. I assume this is just about why victimless acts are illegal in general?

Only problem is that you can't host your own server unless you're a paying member, which I no longer am. Maybe I'll renew that soon.

That is lame. Btw, I have issues with my internet right now, so I don't know if I would be able to play today. It is butt slow.

Besides, I really should work on my scripted game review for Whacked.
I'm gonna try and sleep soon anyways, jetlag messed up my sleeping schedule badly and I'm hoping to fix it in the first week of classes.

Skimmed through the video. It seems like a good review that matches my opinion almost perfectly, but I'm not gonna watch Angry Joe. One of the worst internet personalities and an extremely obnoxious reviewer.

YouTube

And you have every right to have you own and disagree. :)

I just really don't get the appeal. It seems like he makes good points and proper reviews, but I just can't stand his constant yelling, costumes, obnoxious behavior and his whole "theme". I get that it's intended because he is "Angry"Joe after all, but I just find the way he presents himself irritating.

too simplistic.
What do you want from an analysis of donuts?
Oh, nothing. Just pointing out that I've seen this before and found it too superficial to be of much value. Even by using donuts, this could have been better had whoever made this not stuck to short single sentences.

Not that I don't appreciate what this is trying to do. It's admirable to try and simplify abstract philosophies to this extent. I'm sure it'll help some with little to no knowledge on the subject grasp the very basics of some philosophies, but it's a little too superficial for my liking.

I doubt my computer could run it.
Quake offers some of the most highly customisable graphical settings in pretty much any video game. I'm pretty sure my 10 year old laptop could run the game if I turned down the graphics enough.

Example of some extremely low graphical settings:

Quake Live is on Steam. And with the recent update to make the game a little more accessible and noobfriendly, none of you have any excuse not to play it.

If you play it with me, I'll play it. Do we have a deal?

That game isn't any fun without friends.

I think he means a place where you can actually give feedback and where supportive criticism doesn't get you banned by overly zealous mods.

Kinder: the Sep7agon's resident Desticle.
I don't think he's really a Desticle. Just someone who spend a lot of money on the collector's edition of a game that ultimately ended up being extremely disappointing and who is now trying to defend the game as much as possible in order to justify the purchase to himself.

Isn't there like some international law that gives each country a certain distance out that they control/own waters? If the oil fields were in Scotland's zone then it would belong to them.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Each country has an Exclusive Economic Zone reaching out almost 400km from the coastline where they can exploit natural resources.
