I only used Coup once or twice, but I still remember how utterly awful it all looked. Glad I'm not the only one thinking this.

Well, basically it would be by presenting a set list of colors and background patterns to choose from, that were tested earlier to fit with the overall design and possible mismatching color choices for the text. Something like the current title bar system, but applied to post backgrounds, a little bit more advanced. (Which means loads of work both in design and implementation)
I don't think that's what anyone thinks of when talking about custom backgrounds though. Back in the days of Coup it meant being able to include a picture, for example.

There might be ways to make background change possible whilst it fits with the design without effectively breaking it. I am not going to personally investigate on this right now, though.
I have my doubts about that. The original Coup tried to do the same yet in the end the forum still turned into a cacaphony of chaotic messes, conflicting colors and a ton of anime pictures everywhere. I can't really imagine how you couuld people the freedom to do that without having the forum turned into a chaotic mess.

Hundreds of thousands of guns are stolen in the US every single year, combined from both burglaries and other forms of crime. That's dozens of guns stolen every single day. Of course, not all are taken from people carrying them in public, but some are bound to be. Just because it doesn't end up on social media and becomes a news story that can be found through google, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

It's the same one a bunch of times, then one from 2013, and one in 2009
Hardly all that frequent.
Again, only a very small fraction of robberies and gun theft makes the news. It's naive to think that this has only happened 3 times. Even though some articles were about the same event, I believe I did find more than just 3 on google.
