You're already making a mistake. Come to Belgium or something cool instead.

But seriously, 4 hours early is ridiculous (except if your airport is having issues or has something strange going on). 2 hours for international, 3 hours for intercontinental is a better time schedule.

Lot less stressful than speaking to people individually for me
The stressful part mainly comes from the questions for me.

What do you do when they stump you
They haven't (yet), but it's my biggest concern when giving these presentations. I'd probably either try to improvise and talk my way out of it, or just admit that I can't answer that question right there and that I'll get back to them by email later.

One of the biggest differences between college level papers and academic ones is not so much the level of writing but their scrutiny and impact. A college paper usually has close to zero impact. It's rarely anything more than an exercise in research methods and formal writing skills. You gather some easy to access sources, mention their findings and throw in some of your own (usually extremely limited) understanding and opinion. A professor or his assistant skims through it, gives you a grade and that's it. Even if you do have to present it, expectations are almost always pretty low.

But academic papers need to make an impact. They're essentially worthless if they don't contribute to or advance the "state of the art" (which is the current body of knowledge and technical developments on a certain topic / field). And because of that they're subject to a lot more scrutiny both before their publication (usually through peer review) and after (through presentations, panel discussions, public / private criticism). So when you put an article out there in a high profile outlet, it's going to be read by peers and experts who expect something new and of a certain value/quality. And they are going to question your analysis and your opinion, and they're going to doubt or agree/disagree with what you have to say. So even though I know that I'm familiar with what I'm talking about, the thought of someone with more experience and higher standing calling you out and going "no, that's wrong" is nervewrecking.
No, that's wrong
Nerves = shot.

That's basically my claim to fame.
To say the least, I enjoy public speaking.
Makes me wish I had started with it sooner.

what was your article about
The most recent one? Developing a specific type of AI and machine learning techniques in legally compliant ways to meet requirements of data protection, privacy and equality.
Is there any way you could post it here? It sounds fascinating.
I wish I could, but it would easily reveal my name and such. I can give you a brief explanation of how it works though. It's pretty fascinating stuff.

ahaha, you're funny
You've gotta do something anyway and just about anything takes some effort. Might as well put it towards something useful and interesting. Just saying, you're a pretty good writer and enjoy public speaking. You just lack the credentials and probably the research experience, but that's about it.

This has literally never happened to me. My joke got a few laughs though, that's something.
What part? The speaking going smoothly or you enjoying it? It helps when you have something valuable to say or when it's something you're interested in.

There's something inexplicably great about speaking to a room of people who are your peers or superiors and commanding their attention and sincere interest in what you have to say. Once the anticipatory nervousness fades away and it's a smooth ride to the end, it can be a very exciting and rewarding experience. Agree / disagree?

I was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
What's illegal about this and RC's post?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolen_Valor_Act_of_2005

The law made it a federal misdemeanor to falsely represent oneself as having received any U.S. military decoration or medal. If convicted, defendants might have been imprisoned for up to six months, unless the decoration lied about is the Medal of Honor, in which case imprisonment could have been up to one year.

"The Act by its plain terms," Justice Kennedy wrote, "applies to a false statement made at any time, in any place, to any person". Such breadth means that the law is "sweeping... [the] reach of the statute puts it in conflict with the First Amendment... the statute would apply with equal force to personal, whispered conversations within a home."[26]
The Act was ruled rightly unconstitutional a few years ago. It was replaced in 2013 by a new one that only criminalized pretending to have received medals for the purpose of receiving tangible benefits. To my knowledge, simply saying you have one or even owning a fake one isn't at all illegal, and neither is claiming you're military when you're not (unless it's to claim certain illegitimate benefits).
my love is a tangible benefit
Maybe acting on it is, sure.

It's ridiculous Ireland doesn't have legal abortion yet. It was baffling to see anti-abortion protests and signs when I was in Dublin. Keeping it illegal does not accomplish anything. It's stupid and should be removed.

Judging by the 'post your face' thread, I'm not sure I'd like to see nudes of more than like 10% of the users here.
