The Flood / Re: Update on Sep7agon V2« on: January 02, 2015, 06:16:58 AM »Is Half Life 3 going to come out before this update? The obvious jokes aside, we should all keep in mind that this isn't Bungie. There's no dedicated dev team that gets to work on these updates full time. The only two people involved with the site's design and development are busy folks occupied with education, work, different projects and personal life. Setting the ETA and release date around New Year's may be a nice kind of "present" from the staff to you, but it might not have been the best of ideas in light of the holidays and lack of the free time that goes with them. But the update is coming and soon too. Furthermore, we could've already released Sep7agon.next at this point and then be forced to deal with bugs and broken features for the next couple of weeks. Unlike Bungie, however, we'd rather present you with the finished and polished product, which I feel is definitely worth the slightly longer wait. As we speak, the staff is trying out the new test forum. When I signed in to the Staff Chat this morning, there were over 1500 unread posts waiting for me. Virtually all of them were about the test forum and dealt with improving features, reworking certain design elements and ironing out bugs. At this point, it's being worked on pretty much constantly. We're currently in the very final stages of the project and its development. Rest assured that Sep7agon 2.0 is well on its way and will be introduced to you all very soon. Just don't forget that it's all the work of just two people who are doing this entirely voluntarily in their free time. 11014

It's completely bogus but it could have its uses as a source of inspiration. I've been reading some stuff by De Botton for my Ethics class and he raises a few good points on how we could take some religious aspects to foster a sense of community and improve society. Pretty interesting stuff.

Serious / Re: Transgender Teen's Suicide Note Goes Viral following her Death« on: January 01, 2015, 06:44:01 AM »I'd imagine that there's several non-profits and organizations working on government support or charity, along with social workers and whatnot. If need be, someone could get a part-time job and spend the rest of the free time working as a volunteer for change. As insensitive as it may sound, real change could've come from pushing through the mess for another a year and then dedicating a life to helping people who are forced in the same spot and campaigning for the better acceptance of trans people in society. If only it were that easy. You're not going to get rich doing it, but there's no doubt on my mind that people who are motivated and skilled enough can contribute to the change in one way or another. The average person with a full time job works 40 hours a week. That leaves a weekly 128 hours of free time, a lot of which can be spent on something a person is truly passionate about. The people who get to spend literally all their time on a project aren't the only ones who make change happen. Even if it's just on the weekends or after work, there's hundreds of ways someone could get involved, help out and put in a meaningful effort. If the person in the OP would've spent a lifetime of nothing more than just an hour of two every week of working towards her goal, it could have made so much more of an impact than becoming part of an empty statistic. 11020

Shame. I'm not going to try and pretend what this person felt like, but this isn't the way to change things. The very selfish and damaging nature of the way this person commited suicide aside, this news story will be long gone and forgotten in just a few days, after which this will just be another empty statistic. As insensitive as it may sound, real change could've come from pushing through the mess for another a year and then dedicating a life to helping people who are forced in the same spot and campaigning for the better acceptance of trans people in society.
