There seems to be a weird double standard with “black” culture where if you bring up negative differences (higher crime rate, single motherhood, school dropout, etc), you’re racist but at the same time you’re expected to acknowledge and respect positive aspects of “black” culture (hip hop, civil rights movement, the use of the word nigga)

This is going straight into my "shit racists say who don't think they're racist" folder.

Kinda easy when you’re already assuming motivations
There's nothing to assume. You just reduced an entire ethnicities identity into one monolithic, inseparable entity by categorizing it as "black culture". Pretty racist if you ask me.

What exactly is "black culture" by the way? Is this including Caribbean culture? African culture? Black British culture? Or do you just think the hippety hop music and gang banging encapsulates everything.

It's really entertaining how defensive people get about this film. Just bizarre.

I honestly do not give one iota of a shit if the fans are butt hurt or satisfied. All I can say with confidence is that TLJ was utter tripe. If that opinion gets your hackles up that much then there's not much point in explaining myself any further.
what gets my hackles up is that you can't provide a single good reason for why it's tripe that can't be summarily torn to shreds

even i could point out better examples of flaws that you probably haven't even noticed or considered
Your opinion literally just consists of spite against fanboys. You haven't addressed anything I've said that isn't frothing at the mouth hysteria over the OT and "Star Wars fans", or whatever the hell that even means or constitutes. Forgive me if I didnt, and still don't take your "observations" with a whole lot of cogency.

Esoteric 4chan memes huh
if that's all you're going to give me, i can't be expected to give much back

and i'm much better at it, so why not
If you're gonna meme your way out of defending a milquetoast, haphazardly constructed film then might as well as respond accordingly, no?
do you know what milquetoast means, or is it just a word that you like to use? because you could justifiably use that word to describe TFA if you wanted—i would still disagree, but i'd be able to see where you're coming from, at least

what exactly did you find "milquetoast" about Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

it couldn't have been the film's uniquely aggressive and unwelcoming tone, or the relatively cutthroat script, because those traits would tend towards the opposite of that term you used
It's milquetoast for the wrong reasons whilst simultaneously being incredibly contrarian for also the wrong reasons.

Are you really trying to argue that the self serving, masturbatory "we just gots to save the abwused animals uWu" segment (which we've been subjected to in literally every garden variety disney film before) was narratively poignant in any way shape or form.

Then again, you just opined that TLJ is the best in the franchise, so it wouldn't surprise me if you did.

except the type of person that this image was designed to mock is the type of person who hates TLJ

hate the movie all you want, but it's kind of sad that you can't even come up with a single coherent reason to do so besides "things didn't turn out the way i expected or wanted"
Seething.
damn i'm just getting epically ass-raped by your esoteric 4chan memes right now

how hard did you cry when they edited hayden christensen into rotj
You're defending a film that has literal Disney channel tier themes.

Wait don't tell me, Canto Blight was the epitome of artistic vision and broke film making barriers. Embarrass yourself more.

TLJ was also very funny, which is refreshing because star wars has always been incredibly sterile when it comes to humor

snoke's death (and the whole build-up to it) was fucking awesome, and the single best climax in the series

i find that star wars fans literally only care about story when there's so much more about to appreciate about movies—TLJ in particular treats us to some of the most visually interesting scenes in the whole series, and i'm not just talking about lightsaber battles; what about the mirror cave sequence? find me a scene in the original trilogy that dared to go in a weird artsy direction like that (you can't because the original star wars movie was a hackjob that was saved in editing)

I'm not implying anything. I'm saying the groundwork that was established in FA was completely 180'd in TLJ, making the movie and the trilogy as a whole one big incoherent disconnect.
the most i can agree with this statement is that rian johnson's desire to stick it to the fanboys was markedly transparent over the course of the movie, but that's ultimately the main reason why i like it in the first place

beyond that, i'm not terribly interested in how the films cohere—i'm just glad that johnson did what he did, even if it TRoS suffered for it, because star wars fans are so insufferable that they had this middle finger coming for decades (besides, i think tragic stuff like the unfortunate passing of carrie fisher ultimately did more damage to the film than johnson's writing ever could)
Okay sure, but none of this improves the shitty quality of the movie.

The fact that Kylo was being built up to be Vader 2.0 but instead turned into some Linkin Park tier rage autist.

The fact that Finn was, well I don't even fucking know what he was meant to be in that movie. If it was comic relief then it was executed abysmally. He ended up just being a non entity character.

And yeah, the fact that Lukes characterisation was essentially intergalactic Tom Hanks in Castaway that does absolutely nothing throughout the film with the exception of being a lame bait and switch "gotcha" moment for Kylo in the climax.

PTSD Luke as a concept could've been done really well too.
i personally don't enjoy it when characters are written with cookiecutters, much less under the auspices of fanboys on how characters "should" act

and are you seriously implying that Darth Vader 2.0 wouldn't have been the lamest and most uninteresting route they could've taken with kylo ren's character

India has more deaths than The Great leap Forward, Ukrainian Famine, and the Red Terror combined? I most certainly would like to know your reasoning behind this.

capitalist activities have killed more people in india alone
If you want to play the historical version of "your dad is shittier than my dad" game then technically capitalism has an obscenely higher death toll than communism.

Atlantic Slave Trade, European colonialism, economic crashes as a result of capitalist greed and US backed fascist regimes when combined have a death toll that exceeds Communist governments.

Nah, The Last Jedi was dope af.

You're damned if you subvert expectations and you're damned if you give the fans what they want.

Personally, I don't care what the fans want. All that matters is the artist's vision for the film; Artists with integrity ignore the opinions and wants of their fans.
There's having an artistic vision and then there's being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.

If you're trying to argue that the meandering mess of TLJ and its contradictory character development is an artistic vision, then sorry to say, it's not a very good one.
still the best one in the film franchise
Nope.
what do you mean by "contradictory character development" anyway

i swear to god, if you're talking about how luke was written

This is what happens when you vote for a man and a government thats entire existence is to prioritise profits over people and vampiric capitalism. Congratulations, the funny floppy haired man scratched your racist itch at the price of being the country with the highest body count on the continent.

I don't want to hear the "never Corbyn" crowd and the buckfast Tories complain about a Tory government ever again.

I liked it. Definitely echo Fedorekd's sentiment that the middle segment dragged a tad, but a really solid show.

I would have liked to see a bit more development and revelation on the child and what it is considering the whole show is centred around him/her/it, but it's basically just used as something to accelerate the plot. Guess that's being reserved for season 2.

Also my boy Werner Herzog was done dirty. Get a mid tier actor if you're gonna kill him after 10 minutes of screen time.

Fight scenes and choreography is definitely where the show excels however.

7.5/10

Not only that, but GoT established pretty early on that there are real and palpable consequences within the foundations of the universe. Trying to apply that to the standard blockbuster formula or hero's journey just doesn't gel all that well because it's never been established that actual real world consequences occur.

Imagine if in LOTR Gimley killed Sauron in the 2nd movie and the 3rd movie is about trying to kill Grima Wormtongue or some bizarre shit. That's the kind of fuckery these clown directors are trying to replicate just to ride that GoT gravy train.

Never really played the first one but what's with this sUbVErTiNg eXpEcTaTiOnS hard on in pop culture recently? Sometimes I think it's an attempt to replicate the game of thrones effect, but surely that's a prime example of how NOT to execute it.

What do you mean?
Examples?
Last Jedi

New Terminator

GoT*

All of them had those "gotcha" moments that tried to be edgy and subversive but really just ended up being disjointed and incoherent.

Also apparently Picard is taking a weird and wacky turn but I'm not a Trekkie so I can't comment.

*Season 8 specifically.

The fatality rate is actually 3-4%, whereas by comparison yearly influenza is at 0.1%, according to the WHO. If you're going to be a belligerent ignoramus then at least get some of the facts right.

The fact of the matter is we do not know the actual death rate (the figures we have are really just verified confirmations, a lot of government bodies are postulating that the figure is much, much higher), the long term health impact this will have, or really much of anything of this disease apart from the fact that it's highly contagious, and the most vulnerable people in our society are at the highest risk of critical illness and/or death. Yeah, they're people too believe it or not.

So basing your entire conclusion of off "well it's basically just the flu, so we shouldn't be taking this seriously" and treating people as statistical numbers that hold no significance is quite frankly revolting, and borderline sociopathic. 200,000 people are no longer on the planet in the span of a couple months. There is no treatment, vaccine or cure for it, and your biggest concern right now is being too alarmist. Laughable.
