Mass Effect is only tolerable because it has a really fucking good story.
I wouldn't go that far.
Plus, if that's your excuse for playing ME then there's no reason why you shouldn't play this since story is the only thing it has going for it. That and sand.
And its examination of the shooter genre, and why we play games like these.

I feel as if Borderlands 3 and The Witcher 3 will change that. Not to mention the third Metro game in the works, which I am expecting will blow me away-as instead of linear they will be going back to something closer to STALKER, which is what most of them previously worked on.

Covenant and Prometheans again because 343i doesn't want to take risks, and wants to draw the story out for at least three more games. We won't get the return of the Precursors/Flood or find the remaining Forerunners.
Storm Cove-, ahem, Covenant, start using that element from Nightfall on outer colonies.

Are you? ME3 was the least RPG, most TPS in the series.
It had ONE fucking hub world outside of the Normandy for god sake, whereas ME2 at least had a few. So don't go telling me about ME2's small amount of exploration.
Also ME3 had the stupid fucking starchild bullshit, and 3 different coloured endings that were only slightly different.
ME2 had the loyalty missions that would affect your game, it had the suicide mission that had multiple outcomes depending on if you did loyalty missions and who you sent to do what.
ME2's story might have been sub-par filler, but the overall game is significantly better than ME3.
Okay, the endings to 3 were an absolute joke-yes. But those loyalty missions were crappy, and i'd take 1 hub world and a range of side-quests and customisation over the action game of ME2. Whatever though, ME1 is objectively superior to both 2 and 3, I just used 3 to represent the whole series

ME3 was pretty meh. The gameplay was good but they took out most of the RPG elements and exploration to be done. (Seriously, only one hub world?). It was more of a third person shooter with dialogue choices at this point.
Fucking wut, ME2 was basically just a mindless 3rd person shooter, at least 3 returned some of the rpg elements and exploration.. What you said is true about 2 though, it was so shallow in comparison-it's only good point was that it fixed combat
