Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gainax, 2007, completed) So the other day, I decided to give this show another shot. Reason being, I overheard some loser at college talking about it last week, just going on and on about how awesome he thought it was, and that it's the greatest show of all time, et cetera. And with every word he spoke, the larger the pit in my stomach grew. It genuinely upsets me when people have shit taste in public, to the extent that I had fleeting thoughts of just going up and slapping him across the fucking face, just to let him know what's what.

To fuel my hatred, I started watching the show from the beginning again, just to remind myself of why I hated it so much, because it had been awhile. And while, by the time I finished, I had fully intended to write up that big long hatepost I've been promising for some time now, I'm extremely embarrassed to admit that I actually can't do such a thing anymore.

Because after having finished my rewatch last night—and I can't bullshit you guys, that's not what I'm hear to do—something just... clicked. I seriously don't know what the fuck I was missing the first couple times I watched this, but for whatever reason, it all just makes sense to me now. This is, by far, one of the deepest, most intelligent, and honest-to-god entertaining shows I've ever seen. A complete turnover from what I used to think of it in the past.

Trust me, if you need help understanding just how this change of heart happened, look no further than episode 4—my personal favorite, and the episode where things really start to pick up, in my opinion. Not only do we have some immaculate art and animation in this episode, it's also the part where the characters really start becoming more fleshed out and likable, and you really start feeling like you're part of the team. It's like you're actually there and stuff. And uh, HELLO? Can we talk about those fucking EPIC giant robot fights? I dare you to spell "epic" without mentioning any of those fights. My favorite thing about them is that they're all VERY cool and VERY epic.

But of course, you guys know me—I'm not just into the mindless action. I need my clever writing, smartly-designed characters, and philosophical food for thought, too, because I need to fool myself into thinking I'm smarter than I am sometimes. And upon further inspection, this show offers that in spades. Just LOOK at this characterization.

Do you hear that? That's the sound of Tolstoy eating his heart out.

I know I've always said that Yoko has always sort of been the postergirl for literally everything I hate about not just anime, but life itself? But I think you guys could all tell that was bullshit. Deep down, she was always my favorite thing about the show, by far, and she's honestly the primary reason I even kept watching in the first place. And can you blame me? She's just such a great character, with one of the coolest and—dare I say—sexiest designs of all time.

My absolute favorite thing about her is that Imaishi demanded the animators to draw her (a 14-year-old girl, canonically) as erotically as possible, which leads me to my biggest overall complaint about the show—I don't think there was enough boob gags. That's really something that this show needed a lot more of. More boob gags. I feel like if there was just three or seven more, this really would've been the first show to get a perfect rating from me. But alas, I suppose I can't ask for too much. Still an amazing show, and my new favorite.

Peace out, Devilman. You were just a passing fad anyway. ROW ROW, FIGHT THE POWAH!

Doki Doki Literature Club (or DDLC) is visual novel, released by Don Salvato (and his young team) on September 22, 2017. It`s free to play, it`s on Steam, so you can try it.

Gameplay:

It`s a visual novel, and what you do in visual novels is read text, then click it to read more text. Sometimes visual novels present you a narrative choice and usually they have multiple endings.

DDLC presents choice making through "writing a poem" thing or in other words picking 20 random words, for a character which you like the most. It`s kinda sad that potential of this mechanism wasn`t fully realized in this game, it would be nice to see at least finished poems you came up with, but on the other hand I understand why it was designed like that, it would take more developing time to improve this mechanism and also it would might give personality to protagonist, which is bad if you try to create a blend, generic protagonist for player to fit in.

DDLC also has bunch of secrets. One time game wished me to have a nice weekend, which I found quite nice since it`s first time in a while somebody wished me that.

Story:

I put my thoughts on it in spoiler.

Spoiler
Story in this visual novel is divided into 3 parts.
First part
Setup stage, or in my words: super generic anime school part, with a lot of shadowing in background. This part can be read in 30 min average. I barely read it in one and half hour in the course of 2 days. This part was super generic on a purpose of hiding horror parts behind it and maybe as a form of developer communicating to reader his thoughts on most highschool anime. And thank god shadowing was there, because if not it, I would throw this game away instantly. Second thing which kept me playing is how writer described character`s life problems. Writing in this part is good, does what it is intended for.
Second part
Altered first stage, or horror stage, w/e floats your boat. This part is good. Not gonna lie, it made me feel very uncomfortable and it was spook for me enough to spend another 2 days on it. This part is altered version of the first one and it`s full of uncomfortable elements such as glitched music, glitched imagery etc. My only complaint with it is how straightforward this part tries to set uneasiness, but other than that this part was good.
Third part
This part is meta commentary on VNs, anime, existential crisis, people. Or it is date with a girl, depends on how you approach it. The way it is set up is next: you`ll hear commentary on some subject, then you`ll be given a minute or two to think about it and this alone makes around hour of content.  This is the part where you actually feel like you are communicating with developer. I love this part.

Music:

Music is amateur, and I didn`t find myself listening to it outside the game, except one track. It`s pretty simple to play. But in this case, music corresponds to story perfectly and it`s a good thing.

Music-story related spoiler
And the reason why amateur music is a good thing here is because main antagonist is pretty much amature herself, while she tries to play with game world, she does mistakes and she is pretty self aware of that. So thats nifty I would say.

Conclusion: Overall a good game. Do I recommend to play it? No, but at least I recommend to download it and forget about it, then, at one night, when you can`t fall asleep, find it on your hard drive and play it and see what happens. Also it`s free to play, so why not.

"YouTube has turned to their community to identify which videos potentially violate their Community Guidelines.  If a viewer flags a video that they think violates the TOS and Community Guidelines then YouTube staff will take a look and, if it is a violation, they’ll take the video down.
That doesn`t make any sense. There are thousands, if not more, videos which get flagged everyday and they have average 10 min length (after youtube implemented adpocalypse). So to review those, you have to have either a giant team of people (which you need to pay) or you have to implement "more reviewed videos - more salary" mechanism that just make your team to skim through all videos, but that just will make things even worse.

Wear it because you like it, not because to make people consider you more feminine, ok?

Spoiler

Dunno, I used to express my personality through my actions rather appearance, because I want people to judge me and like my personality on my actions alone. Now, I don`t say that I won`t wear mascara or other stuff, I would if I like it or maybe to collect some info based on a way people would react to it (though it means I would decept people, if this was my sole reason, which I don`t like to do without need). Doing it for solo purpose of being more feminine seems pointless to me, because behind genders and appearance I see human and her actions.

But if you like it then I don`t see any problem.

as popular as this show seems to be, i would like to know why nobody has ever told me about rurouni kenshin

because it kinda meets all of my criteria

i'm not necessarily loving the show or anything, but i can't help but feel extremely bitter whenever i come across a popular, well-respected show that could easily have been recommended to me YEARS ago, only for that to never happen
Hmm? I thought it was recommended to you already. Thats weird

History is needed when you need citizenship of other country or for statesman, diplomat, ambassador work.
